I’m starting to think that 358/2 Days could have worked without Xion based on the observations of this user TheJackSage on YouTube among others. See if you can answer the three questions in this image to prove them wrong.

In this video, I will be tracing the connections between 52 different versions of Xion’s theme, following the journey from when her battle theme was called “Dirge of the Fourteenth”, until today, where we know it as “Vector to the Heavens”, establishing how there are many hidden influences between all these versions, including some of the official versions included in the games.

Continuing with my overanalyzing of 358/2 Days, another concept has caught my interest. Recruiting new members. The original Organization XIII have never been 13 for long. For the most part the primary team has been Organization VIII. Or IX if you count Xion, but it's never actually 13 for very long. Now I know the purpose of Organization XIII has changed over the course of the series but for Days it was still primarily in KH2 mode of their goal of collecting hearts to send Kingdom Hearts. Simple enough.

But their is something that gets overlooked that I wish got expanded upon in the Organization. And that is the replacement for members. As we know five members of the group were sent to Castle Oblivion and killed off, but why is it they never replace their ranks to be back at 13? Let's look at Roxas. Roxas was so important to the Organization that they made a replica clone to copy his abilities in case something happened to him. That makes perfect sense. If you work all day at a computer then make sure you have backup files in case something unfortunate happens to your work. Xion was that backup file for the Organization. But why didn't they replace the others?

Now you could argue that only Vexen and was worth replacing when compared to Roxas and his importance to the group. And frankly I'd agree with that. But the concept of new members has come up in the game itself. When Roxas first goes to Olympus with Xigbar, the latter mentions they could use the area to scout for new recruits for the Organization. At first you might think, does he mean more Dusk? Which is probably what it meant. But what if they had tried to turn Hercules or Hades into a Nobody to refill their ranks? What if while Roxas was training with Phil, another org member made contact with Hercules or Hades to try and turn one into a Nobody? Hercules is one of the physically strongest Disney characters in KH, and could have replaced Lexaeus as one of the Organization's physical attackers. Or smooth talker god of the underworld Hades, who could have replaced Marluxia as the reaper. Also Megara's sprite is confirmed to have been in the game and went unused. I wonder if this could have been the game where she and Hercules meet since she was not present in KH1, and perhaps she played a role in trying to trick Hercules into losing his heart the same way she was tricked into Herc losing his strength in the movie. Obviously they wouldn't have turned Hercules, but it could have been a good story to tell on the Organization trying to get back to being 13.

Xaldin had a similar story with the Beast, and as we know he was thwarted by Sora and Belle. Beast, like Hercules, is one of the stronger Disney characters with a strong heart. Able to cross between worlds without help. It was a very cool story, and Beast could have been a potential replacement for the empty five seats where nothing gather.

It just feels kinda weird they didn't feel the need to stay at 13, given how important that became in future games to always have 13 members. To the point they had 13 plus reserves. Saix tells Roxas "When have we ever been more then 13?" But the real question is "when have they ever been 13 to begin with"? I know Saix just said that because he hates Xion, but it doesn't change the question on the importance of 13.

To me in addition to Beast, and given the worlds they choose to put in Days, it would have been interesting if they had scouted the likes of Hercules, Hades, and even the likes of Aladdin and Jack Skellington, people with strong hearts to potentially either join the ranks of Organization XIII or turn them into Dusk or some class of Nobody to serve under them. Nobodies don't just grow on trees.

Now again, I know with Disney characters they are restricted with what they can or can't do with them. And I know Organization XIII is different today then what it was back then. But this is more of wondering from a in universe situation on why Xemnas didn't think to replace the Castle Oblivion team. Because even if you take into account their real objective they still need all 13 seats filled up. Anyway that's just the thoughts of a Kingdom Hearts fan with too much free time on his hands.

I've been replaying 358/2 Days and I'm started to appreciate the little things the game added to the Disney worlds to not make them feel 100% filler when focused on Roxas and his daily life.

Agrabah: Roxas learns about friendship from watching Genie and Aladdin. I believe this is where he hears the term "best friend" which later comes into play for him with Axel and Xion. Roxas learns of the different tiers of friendships and when Axel first states he doesn't have a best friend when first asked, Roxas's portrait is sad. He might see this as his friendship with Axel is not that strong. But this of course changes after a trio mission in Twilight Town, where he and Xion earn the "best friend" trophy.

Beast Castle: Roxas learns a lot during his missions there with Xion and Xaldin. Not just about the castle's story but about love. Watching Belle and Beast also foreshadows Roxas's own struggles for the future when he himself loses something important to him (Xion) which is a big part of his story.

Olympus Coliseum: In addition to Roxas interacting with Phil (one of my favorite og/Disney interactions) Roxas learns that he is special and that he has expectations to meet from both the Organization and those that put their trust in him (Phil) I believe this is another reason Roxas continues to train with Phil even though he doesn't have to to slay the Heartless.

Wonderland: Roxas learns to trust his instincts and follow the White Rabbit as well as interact with the Cheshire Cat. It always pays off because whenever he does he is able to find the Heartless he is after. This helps Roxas grow as a character, so in the future when he is second guessing something he can always trust his instincts. This comes into play later in another Disney world.

Halloween Town: This world didn't do much for Roxas personal growth that I can think of. But there is more subtle foreshadowing here. The Leechgrave storyline is Xion's. Xion starts off small and cute, harmless right? Just like the Leechgrave. Lock, Shock, and Barrel can represent the Organization in that they take in the small Leechgrave just as the Organization take in Xion. In both cases they lose control of their small pets. The Leechgrave grows big and consumes it's fellow Heartless. By the end of Days Xion is "trying" to consume her BFF Roxas and becomes a giant armored monster. But in reality she wants Roxas to defeat her which is not what Xemnas wants and thus he has lost control over her. Not sure if this was intentional or not but the similarities were quite interesting. Also Roxas and Xion fought here for the first time too.

Neverland: This is the world where Roxas really starts to do what he wants even if it doesn't benefit his mission. He wanted to help Tinkerbell and decided to do so. Even though it had nothing to do with his mission and would not help him accomplish his Organization goal. It is here Roxas fully thinks for himself and where his rebellious attitude really starts to grow and take shape.

Twilight Town needs no explanation I think, but I do want to touch on the dropped world that didn't make it into the game which is Pinocchio's world. It was said that this world would have been a story for Roxas and Xion to want to gain hearts after hearing about Pinocchio, the puppet who became real. This would have been a beautiful story and really touch on the aspect of Nobodies wanting a heart by watching others gain a heart. Also would have been great for Xion's replica/puppet storyline too.

Anyway those are my thoughts on 358/2 Days Disney worlds. While the Disney worlds in this game did nothing to advance their own storylines or Kingdom Heart's overall big plot, I think they did a great job in building Roxas's character and his friendships as well as future events for him, shaping him into the powerful and confident young man he is today. It is because of this game Roxas became my number one favorite character in the series and his character growth is my favorite story of Kingdom Hearts.

And i dont mean a KH3 style remake, maybe bring it up to look like KH2 or BBS and put it on the switch or something. The game structure is unchanged just like in other FMs- we're just adding stuff.

	So, what would you want?

I'd like extra cutscenes between Axel and Saix, mayhe flashbacks to when they first joined or their time before being a nobody and encoutering X. Maybe even have more time with Axel, or more reports be unlockable from what he was thinking at the time with Roxas looking like Ven and ect.

I'd also like Roxas and Xion to have more missions together and more dialogue between the two. Like have missions to some worlds where he originally went alone be with her and they have more conversations or something. Same with other Org members. Now that we know what they are, I'd like hints of it in their dialogue in these interactions. Or at least have us get to know them and flesh them out a little better.
Maybe even have a new world or two like with Pinocchio. There were plans to have that included.

	Secret bosses!
And how cool would it be to give it a secret movie? One that gave us a hint at Xigbars identity, or the KHUX connections between Axel and Saix or Xemnas plan with the ancient keybares or something?

What would you want to see?

I have searched the depths and heights of the interwebs, looking high and low and every nook and cranny, and for some reason I *cannot* for the life of me find the UK TV spot for 358/2 Days.

This may seem very arbitrary but I can't believe that the recording is lost because so many similar NA ones still exist. Someone, somewhere must have it! I really want to see this advert again because it was because of this single advert that I even become interested in KH.

I'd love to see it again and if you could help me out you have no idea how appreciated I'd be T.T

After Kingdom Hearts II acted as the series' magnum opus, KH fans were all left with the same question: when is Kingdom Hearts III coming out? Nomura told us that he would get to work on it as soon as he could (which in hindsight, is absolutely adorable), but in the meantime, we got the announcement of not one, not two, but THREE new Kingdom Hearts games, all taking place across the series' timeline.

And across multiple platforms. None of which were PS2.

Thanks, Nomura.

Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days was the first to be released, coming out in 2009 on the Nintendo DS. However, it would eventually see a re-release on the PS3 / PS4 as part of the 1.5 HD Remix. The catch? It was basically turned into a movie, since Nomura didn't have the time and resources to rebuild the entire game from the ground up.

Now, I will be reviewing Days in its CUTSCENE form, rather than its full game form. You may be asking yourself, "Why wouldn't you review the full game?" Well, the answer is quite simple: I never got to play it. I never owned a DS, so unless I resorted to "less than legal" means, I simply couldn't experience the game for myself. Because I'm reviewing the movie instead of the game, I can't critique 358/2 Days' gameplay features and variations. This means that my final score will have to hinge ENTIRELY on the story and presentation. So, is this side-story one that you should experience for yourself? Let's find out.

Keep in mind that this review WILL contain spoilers. You have been warned.

Story

During Sora's original visit to Hollow Bastion, he discovered that Kairi's heart had taken refuge inside of him. In order to free her, Sora had only one option: releasing his OWN heart as well. This act saved Kairi, but caused Sora to become a Heartless for a very short while. This act had the unintentional side-effect of creating a Nobody, who would come to be known as Roxas. Due to him being a Nobody of a Keyblade wielder, Roxas also had the power to use the Keyblade. Because of this, the enigmatic Organization XIII (main antagonists of CoM and KHII) were quick to snatch him up and make him a member of their ranks. Roxas spends his days wandering the castle, destroying Heartless to build Kingdom Hearts, and watching the sunset with his friends Axel and Xion, who is the Organization's 14th member. As time goes on, though, Roxas begins to question everything around him. Why can't he remember his past? Why is the Organization so obsessed with Kingdom Hearts? Who is Sora? Why are his supposed allies so insistent on keeping secrets from him? What is it that connects him and Xion so closely? Roxas's pursuit of these answers quickly takes him down a road of pain, betrayal, and heartbreak.

I should start off by saying that you do NOT need to have experienced 358/2 Days to understand the overarching plot of Kingdom Hearts. Beyond not knowing who Xion is, this is very much a side-story, something that can enhance your enjoyment of the overall plot, but you can get by without playing. This is an approach that works far better than in Chain of Memories, which was simultaneously completely irrelevant and completely vital to understanding KHII.

Much like CoM though, Days takes itself far more seriously than other KH games. But because of the subject matter, this approach works as well. We caught a brief glimpse of Roxas's life in KHII, but we saw VERY little of his time in the Organization. Over the year that this game takes place in, we get to see Roxas going through a lot of ups and downs, highs and lows. A tricky thing with prequels is that it can kind of ruin the suspense, and it's hard to argue that's not the case here. However, I personally think the story works that to its advantage. We, as the audience, already know that Roxas' story does NOT have a happy ending, so there's this feeling of dread that hangs over the movie, even when it's just the ice cream trio hanging out and eating ice cream.

Another part of what makes this work is the characters. The main two we follow are Roxas and Xion, closely followed by Axel. While the story deals with many elements, including a traitorous plot between Axel and Saix that kinda goes nowhere, it's the friendship between this trio that drives the plot forward. What makes this so effective is that they aren't just already friends. We get to slowly watch this friendship build between Roxas and Axel, and later, Roxas and Xion. It's because we care about that friendship that it's so hard to watch it slowly fall apart as secrets start coming out and they're forced to take sides in the Organization.

Xion is a plot device. She was created to give Roxas the drive to abandon the Organization, and is disposed of when that purpose is fulfilled. It's the truth. That being said, Xion is still a likeable character in her own light. Unlike Axel, who is more of a teacher / mentor to Roxas, Xion is the one person in the Organization Roxas can relate to. Like him, Xion can use the Keyblade, and like him, she has no memories of her past life. Days is just as much about her journey as it is about Roxas, and when she discovers the (rather messed up) truth about who she is, it makes sense why it would affect Roxas so much: him and Xion have so much in common, so what if that's what he is, too? It all culminates in one of the saddest endings in the series, with Roxas losing everything and fighting in vain to take back the life that everyone around him stole from him.

That being said, the movie DOES have some pacing issues. 358/2 Days was a pretty long game taking place across multiple worlds, yet almost the entire story takes place on the Twilight Town clock tower. There are more than a few significant stretches where it feels like nothing's happening. In addition, while it's main three characters are done very well, the REST of the Organization (save for Saix) is given nothing to do. Many of them don't even get to SPEAK. Hell, Marluxia and Larxene, the two main antagonists of CoM, only appear for a combined 6 seconds. I get that it's Roxas' story at the end of the day, but the fact that so few of the Organization actually matter in the story OF the Organization is frustrating.

Presentation

Naturally, being HD-ified for the PS3 / PS4 means that Days looks gorgeous, that's obvious. However, it's difficult to ignore how much it re-uses the same locations over and over and over again. It gets exhausting looking at the clock tower for such long stretches of time, honestly. And as I mentioned before, VERY few other worlds get to appear here, so it makes Days feel smaller than it already does.

All of the main voice actors reprise their roles, and they do just as great a job as they did before. Jesse McCartney still kills it as Roxas, and Quinton Flynn gives Axel an undeniable charm and charisma. However, there is ONE weak link in the cast: Alyson Stoner as Xion. She was weak, and I mean WEAK, when Days first hit in 2009, and while her performance IS better now, it's not by a whole lot. Too many of her lines sound unnatural and stilted, and her scream is still like nails on a chalkboard. Also, yet again, the lips aren't synced to the english voices.

The music is great, but limited. The game is comfortable with reusing old tracks from the series, but the few original pieces we get to hear are absolutely incredible, the highlight being Xion's theme (or "Musique Pour La Tristesse de Xion," if you feel like sounding pretentious). It's a shame we don't have more unique songs to listen to.

Verdict

The things that 358/2 Days does well, it does REALLY well. The main trio are all likeable, it's visually gorgeous, the plot is laced with drama and tragedy, and it adds a ton of new depth to Kingdom Hearts II. Roxas is an incredible character, and his life slowly fall apart around him can be hard to watch. You root for him, despite knowing that his story isn't going to end well. When it goes for your emotions, it hits hard. But there are plenty of flaws too. Xion's actress is a notable weak link in the cast, the music gets repetitive, the clocktower segments can start to drag on, too much of the Organization are given nothing to do, and there is practically no action in the entire movie. That's why I'm giving Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days a:

7 / 10

It's a perfect compliment to Kingdom Hearts II: it will help you enjoy the story more, but if you want to skip it, you aren't missing a whole lot, either.

As the first of the trio of mobile KH games, it does its job. However, there was one that was built up to far more than the others. The one that got its own epic trailer if you complete KHII. That's the one people were hyped for, and that's the one that got released next.

Upon further investigation, I have come to the conclusion that 358/2 Days is deeper than we all thought. In the beginning, Xion first appears in Day 7. Xion is hooded up, starting the beginning of her depression. The Organization XIII represents her friendships. She has cut ties with most of her friends, except for the ones she cares about (Roxas and Axel). Xion doesn't even talk with them that much, up until Day 24 at least. Here, she begins to talk, as if she were to confess about her depression to her best friend, Roxas. Xion chokes up a little bit, as she doesn't want to frighten him. If you notice during scenes, Xion gets herself into dangerous situations, as if she were to kill herself, but doesn't want anyone to know about her depression. During Day 74, Xion appears with and without a hood in several shots. When her hood is up, it is her depression taking over her, but when the hood is down, it is her overcoming her depression. When Xion can't use her Keyblade, it is representing her being too depressed to do anything significant. When the Organization wants to get rid of her (calling her puppet, "Poppet", etc.), that is a representation of her cutting ties with her friends. Between Days 174-193, Xion is asleep, representing her deep depression. When Roxas is told in the end that Xion has to be killed in order for Roxas to be him again, it is symbolic of her having to cut ties with Roxas, almost as if it were suicide. She doesn't mind being killed off, as she sees herself as insignificant. During Day 357, Xion commits suicide. sorry if this theory is weak, but I felt this was interesting during my viewing of 358/2 Days.

Like I mean in terms of both days of playable missions AND days where it's just events and cutscenes happening. Basically, how many times does that Day Counter land on a single day and progress, if you never skipped any mission and you counted every day where it's just cutscenes. I'm really curious cause I'm considering this odd challenge where you play one day of the game a day for the semester, hopefully with the end result of finishing by the end of said semester, but I kind of need to calculate the rate at which that works.

So again, how many days are there where the Day Counter can land on a number? This includes days where you have playable missions (both mandatory and optional), as well as days where you don't play a mission but plenty of cutscenes and events unfold throughout the day (like when Roxas is asleep but other characters are talking for instance). Cause it's definitely lower than 100 days total, I know that much, but I'm looking for a precise number here, so that way I know whether or not I have to factor in any weekends or not.
