Kingdom Hearts III featured on IGN Live during Gamescom 2018; Hidden Mickeys, world-specific boss reveals and more discussed

Recommended Posts

During Gamescom 2018, Sunil Godhania, Square Enix Europe's community manager, went on IGN's Live Developer Playthrough to show off the Toy Box demo for Kingdom Hearts III.

Besides giving us a good look at Kingdom Hearts III's gameplay, Sunil also talked about some new details about the game.

Sunil started out by talking about the Toy Box world and the fact that this was the first title in the series on Xbox.

Every Kingdom Hearts game can be a jumping in point for everyone. I'd say to anyone that's potentially worried about that, please just play the game, get into it, and I think you'll find a lot you'll love about it.

After showing off the transformation for the Tangled Keyblade, Mirage Staff, Sunil commented on the number of Keyblade transformations in the game.

I've seen at least two (transformations) per Keyblade so far.

Sunil also commented on world-specific bosses and whether we'll find out about them before launch.

Things like that we're going to keep very very secret and wrapped up until the game launches.

When using a Gigas for the first time, Sunil commented on the number of tutorials and user accessibility.

Whenever you enter a new minigame in Kingdom Hearts, you'll always get a short tutorial just to let you know how to play, because the game features so many different ways of playing. This is basically a first-person shooter now, which is completely different to what we've been seeing.

One of the most exciting bits of information from this interview came when Sunil went into detail about the purpose of Hidden Mickeys within the game.

If you can see, there's actually a Hidden Mickey in the background on the wall. Those are another mini-game throughout Kingdom Hearts III, you have to try and find all of those in each world. There may be some prizes.

The demo then ended after the battle against the Gigas, with Sunil finishing up by talking about how excited he and Square Enix are about finally releasing Kingdom Hearts III.

sounds interesting, so that means that spaceship heartless isnt the main boss? hope for a zurg battle yet

I'm so betting on Zerg. Since there's no mention of him OR Sora in TS3 (From what i remember at least), then it CAN be completely canon for Zerg to reappear somehow.

Wait the game's a 1st person shooter now?! I won't be allowed to play it if it bears any semblance to a 1st person shooter... :(

ok actually as long as its not ALL a shooter I can.

Will finding hidden Mickeys be like finding stickers in BBS?

Not quite sure. You probably have to run up to it and press triangle or whatever we had to do for 0.2 with the star signs.

Wait, I want to know by what he meant there. The guy asked "So you control Sora throughout the game?"

And then the other guys said "Well for the majority of the game."

Does that mean we'll have a chance to control our other Keyblade heroes???

Yes. Nomura confirmed this a lot time ago.

Something tells me finding the hidden mickeys are gonna be an objective similar to the objectives in 0.2 where you had to do stuff like "Find the Seven White Jewels."  I'm pretty sure they said objectives were still going to be a thing in KH3.  While the game was technically only a short , it did give 0.2 some replay value if you missed any of the objectives. Aligning those glowing platforms to form a Wayfinder and watching out for the meteor shower in the "sky" were neat little details that I actually enjoyed.

As far as playing multiple characters go, I think we'll get to switch over to Riku for a little bit in the Dark Realm and maybe we'll be able to play as Kairi at some point. That is, if her role in the story won't be very small like people speculate it will be.  :(
