This is the worst Kingdom Hearts game ever made. Even worse than Coded.

Yeah you heard that right. I wish I never would feel the need to say this about a long awaited finale for one of my favourite game series of all time, but after the finale and ending I feel I have to vent about this bullshit.

 

Spoiler

 

* The Non-disney characters look lifeless and badly animated in the Unreal engine cutscenes

* No Coliseum, Secret Bosses or side-content of any kind minus the Arcade and Bistro

* Only one non-Disney world that has a use besides one cutscene

* Keyblade graveyard is just four corridors and a save point. Twilight town doesn't even have anything interesting in it. You can't even visit the train station or the usual spot and they REMOVED. THE SKATEBOARDS.

* No second stories to worlds like in KH2. I legit thought after saving Aqua/Ven, we were going to go on missions in the Disney worlds together and see people like Ven/Axel or Riku/Aqua interact with one another, unlocking "Part 2s" in those worlds where the plot 'really begins' like in KH2. NOPE straight to Keyblade Graveyard and the bullshit that takes place thereafter.

* Worlds feel like open empty amphitheatres like DDD. Only exception to this rule was the PotCaribbean world (admittedly the highpoint of the game)

* No Final Fantasy Characters new or returning

* Last Org XIII member backstories alluded to and then firetrucking skipped (Find out in our shitty mobile game!)

* Reaction Commands removed for shitty Disney attraction rides that ruin the pace, difficulty and feel like Ads for Didneyworld

* Literal GARBAGE finale and final boss fight. Felt like a side-boss, not on the level of Dragon-Xemnas.

* ZERO time for the Guardians of Light to socialise/ have any firetrucking interaction whatsoever after saving Aqua

* Most Anti-Climatic Climax in game history

* The entire climax minus the unnecessary timewarp shit with the Final World was COMPLETELY PREDICTABLE. No actually it was completely unpredictable because of how COMPLETELY BLAND IT WAS! There was NOTHING! You just mow down the Org members, get awkward mid-battle cutscenes of them recanting their ways and that's it. There were even Org XIII members who were traitors! WHY didn't they act in the Finale then? Why is it just a royale of gimped Org XIII member fights? Then you timewarp into Xehanorts' past and stay there for all of two seconds as you blandly beat the most powerful villain canonically in the series in the blandest way possible. (For a fulfilling finale, think something like the finale of Fullmetal Alchemist (Brotherhood/manga) or something. You know what I mean)

* NO Non-Disney key blades besides Star Seeker, Kingdom Key & the reskin of Kingdom Key from the mobile trash

* Xehanorts new voice actor completely sucked

* Most of the Music was an awful mishmash of mismatching motifs(Boss theme #2 and the Scala Ad Caelum music for example, Vanitas' theme was straight up violated and is out of tune) and had a lot of broken sounding chords. Did Yoko Shimomura really compose this?

* Kairi and Axel did firetrucking nothing

* Absolutely no battle choreography in the cutscenes for the FINAL BATTLE, firetrucking BBS did it better. EDIT: They made a fully firetrucking rendered epic CG trailer for Verum Rex, a literal non-game reference to Versus XIII in the toy story world but couldn't make anything outside of janky Source Film-maker animated segments for the Final Clash between the 7 Lights and 13 Darknesses? I'm sorry What the F*&%!? Is this Disney influence?

* Chirithy needs to be Dark Firaga'd firetrucking cancer macguffin with an AIDS voice

* Maleficent and Pete didn't even firetrucking do anything

* Sora gets no crazy powers like he does in KH2. Just shitty Disney transformations & Second Form which just lets you use Sonic Blade

* Whole game feels rushed and shoddily put together

* HE DOESN'T EVEN KISS KAIRI

* Half the game was a Disney Ad, the other half was just an Ad for the next firetrucking KH game

* **Did I mention NOTHING gets explained?**

 

Nomura has gone full hack. After the ending I'm dead inside and feel like I've been betrayed. 13 years. It wasn't supposed to be this way.

Teasing the black box and Xiggy's reveal as Luxu until the end of the game as a "To Be Continued" was a massive insult to fans frankly. And werent we going to find out about Scala ad Caelum as a town, maybe even have a playable segment as Young Xehanort with Eraqus? How did Eraqus get Aqua and Terra? Where did the Land of Departure come from? If Xehanort is from the Destiny Islands, how and why did a supposedly even YOUNGER version of him get to Scala ad Caelum? What is special about Scala ad Caelum that all of Xehanorts' selves can exist there at once? What even IS Scala ad Caelum? *Find out in our cashcow mobile game* is the most offensive and disgusting cop-out possible and makes those cheesy twitter loading screens far worse in retrospect.

I heavily HEAVILY disagree and I'm like one of the harshest critics of the series on this site.

 

There is more effort put into 3 than any of the handheld KH games,it is more accessible to boot despite the plot jargin and the combat,while not as good as KH2,is still a lot of fun especially boss battles

 

As someone who's been accused of being a "hater" and as someone who dropped the series after DDD,I can definitely say that for me KH3 was a pleasant surprise...tho I wont deny that my low expectations helped a bit

I have some gripes with III but it's not the worst lol. I'd actually argue it's one of the best games in the franchise since both the combat and story are done well (or at least done decentish for combat).

 

Plus Dream Drop Distance still exists.

it is a series finale. To me there was some unpredictable aspects of it for sure. I mean we had 13yrs to predict what would happen. There is nothing wrong with that. Hell the finale scene was unpredictable for sure

i was disappointed you did not get to do more with Aqua and Ven but I still loved everything they got to do

I also love Xehanort’s fight. It was chaotic and grand. He also was hard as hell on Proud Mode. I still do not 100% know what he was doing to me or how to counter it besides just eating it and healing

The story to me was excellent 

My only main gripe was the length of some cutscenes. I swear I sat there for 20 minutes sometimes and some of it did feel pretty bloated

what is it with FF characters, really. they barely were ever in to begin with, just enough to somehow make you accept it as a FF/Disney mashup and they never had any big role to play. at this point it's basically the usual " I wanted X they didn't give it to me therefore it's shiet".

 

part 2 of worlds, same thing, there was a reason to do so in KH2, but none here. why would it have happened? for what reason? by the time they finally reunite with each other it's time to battle as they believe the OrgXIII to be ready because of larxene.

oh well let's go for a ride we'll see about things later, want some ice cream to please shipping fans? sure the baddies are marching on but hey, no biggie.

but it's a story that needed to be closed and now it's done, in a very KH-ish way might i say as well. what given the tone of the series you really thought they'd just kill everything and be done with it? of course it was going to be something like that. it's still Disney we're talking about here, no matter what.

 

hidden mickeys, battlegates/secret boss, gummiship,crafting, mini games, completion,  i'm sorry if that's not enough for you, but there's still quite a few things to do after beating the game and it's about the size of what was i KH2 if not a bit more even.

 

voice acting, keyblades, worlds, kissing,music etc etc... well that's your opinion versus your expectations.

some might argue it's a good thing we weren't bloated with DIsney plots and worlds, that's not what KH3 was expected for. if anything they've been feeling like subquests we already knew about anyway, waiting for the main storyline to develop in between each of them.

 

nothing was explained? dunno what else you wanted to be explained from the Darkseeker saga. it's basically been taken out as a story part of the overall arching one involving the lost masters, the box, maleficient and so on. these are plot points for another time it makes sense to see them intertwined with the Xehanort's story but that's about it. And so the game focused on Xehanort and not the rest, which makes sense.  But sure there are still some points that need explanations, but to say nothing was explained..that's more than farfetched.

 

but to call this entry the worst KH ever made, please.

The only things I didn't like were the small size of Twilight Town,

 

Land of Departure, and 100 Acre Wood, and the fact they didn't do much with Roxas, Xion, Aqua, Terra, or Ven, and even then we still ended up getting to

The rest of your list I just completely disagree with. But that's just your opinion I guess.
and the mobile game isn't horrible. It's tolerable at least.

I personally think the lack of Final Fantasy characters is irrelevant and an unfair complaint against the game though. The series really would’ve done well even without them.

I can't and won't tell you to think differently but saying you feel like you were betrayed is heavily exaggerated and not reasonable. If anything can be betrayed, it's your own expectations of what the perfect conclusion should have looked like but quite frankly, that's no betrayal. You are free to dislike it and criticize it as I have seen plenty of others do, but claiming this feels like a betrayal is exactly the reason why some outside the fandom think the fans indulge in a huge sense of entitlement.

As I said, I have nothing against people criticizing and hating the decisions they made. It's impossible to like everything and seeing the game through a thick layer of pure fanatism isn't healthy either. But let's not act like we have any say in the matter of how it should have played out. We can be disappointed or frustrated but as some said, many years of expectations are bound to backlash because by now, we all have had expectations of some sort, be they high or low.

I don't want to say something to every point but rather generalize something. Like others said before, after years of predictions it made sense the game would be fairly predictable. If you want to see that as a negative aspect, be my guest, but I don't see much value in incorporating shocking plot twists just for the sake of being shocking, not because they actually make sense in the end.

As for the people who are so intent on having their favorite pairing confirmed by bold declarations of love: Nomura said in an interview years ago that this series is primarily about friendship. It's the main topic. Ship whoever you like but suddenly trying to determine the worth of the game based on whether character x kisses character y in a game that clearly has a different focus than a sloppily written romance is simply not understandable for me and shouldn't even be part of any list on why the game is bad. Not when romance outside of the Disney universe has never been such a huge deal in Kingdom Hearts. That's something I believe should be left to the imagination of the individual player.

I'm not saying you don't have some valid points. Some are fine to criticize or even show some anger about. It's just that I feel some criticism is worded in a way that makes little sense, especially when comparing it to previous entries. For example, it's fine to criticize a lack of socializing or empty areas as a whole but it's not like all other KH games did not suffer from the same issues, hence not making KH3 worse than any other game in the franchise and making a comparison in those aspects impossible. KH2 has just as many empty areas as KH3 does, if not more. Outside of SDG, there's not a lot of out-of-context socializing done throughout the games for any of the original characters. I also wish for more in that area, the criticism is certainly legitimate, but KH3 is not any worse in that aspect than the other games.

I don't the game is that bad.  Sure, the worlds I've visited seem very limited despite being marketed as open world exploration.  Like Twilight Town for instance you get cut off from some parts of the town like the Sandlot, the Usual Place, some aspects of the Old Mansion, the gummi missions are incredibly time consuming but that's probably because I am playing with a level one Gummi Ship and have never had an interest much less an understanding of the gummi ships.  I do wish we got more side story from the other characters and actually got to see them interact with the worlds that Sora visited.  I am hoping that Kairi finally gets her own game and actually gets to meet the people Sora met.

The game isn't bad per say but I just think the version I am playing on now has less to be desired for.  I am still playing it and so far just completed the Hundred Acre Wood.

I also don't get some points of the story like Aeleus being mad at Roxas and unwilling to talk to Sora.  What did Roxas ever do to Aeleus or Lexaeus?  I get him being mad at Riku and Axel since those two caused his death.  But why Sora and Roxas?  Roxas had nothing to do with Castle Oblivion.  I just feel like some things like that were just brought out of nowhere to make the story engaging or something.

I am still beating my way through the game.  I do think we should have gotten more involvement from other people's side of things aside from the occasional cutscenes from Aqua, the Organization, Riku and Mickey and Lea and Kairi.

But you're right, Nomura could create the Mona Lisa and he'll still have his critics.

I'm only about halfway through the game (but I do know some of the spoilers) so I don't know what my last thoughts are gonna be, but I think saying it's the worst KH game ever is quite a bit harsh. Like I know it's all opinion but dang. I have a lot of issues with it, as well as a lot of things I love about it, but I do have to say that overall it's better than the handheld games, like all of them. Even though I don't think it will replace KH2 for me (but that might be due to nostalgia I don't know). Like if you don't end up liking it, that's fine cause everyone has their opinions and I definately have grips with KH3 myself, but it's important to take a breather first and analyze.
