Why do game developers leave removed content in games?

Posted

I've always wondered this, lol. Its like they want you to find it our just spot all their mistakes and fails.

A good example would be Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters. The game had many flaws as far as gameplay goes and a lot of obvious glitches. I actually found one where there was a rock next to a cliff with nothing there. I suicides off the cliff, respawned right next to the cliff and a portal taking you to somewhere else was there when it wasn't there before.

Why don't developers take out removed content and their mistakes? Another example would be all the 3D Models/Renders of characters in the Kingdom Hearts series. They never bother to take them out so I guess they think "oh well were too lazy to remove the Jungle Book world but no one is smart enough to hax into the game and find it".

I've been asking myself this question for a long, long time.

I'm not really sure, but I would assume that when it comes to removing things that it would have to do with whatever difficulty may be involved with removing something, like a world, from the game. Now, when it comes to something like glitches and mistakes, I would think that it either involves them not feeling like the glitch was a big deal(out of laziness) or they just over-looked it somehow.

Concerning glitches, as far as Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters goes, it's almost as if they don't care or replay the game for bugs. There's a lot of easy "walk through the wall" glitches in the game and the one I talked about with the rock and the portal was just pure laziness.

Square Enix is kind of lazy too when it comes to removed content. They make absoloutley no attempt to remove it.

"Oh, there's enough space for the rest. Let's not bother working our asses off to remove something that the players WON'T EVEN FIND during normal gameplay,"

I'm glad that you know for a fact that they make no attempt to remove it. Plenty of video games and I mean PLENTY of them have glitches that range from minor to major. But, I'm sure that your vast experience in video game development would allow you to make such a judgement on the ease of removing a glitch.

LOL. I know for a fact that they don't attempt to move it, look at Superman 64 for example. Video Game developers are lazy these days and I don't see why removed content is still in the games database.

Maybe they can't. I honestly don't know. But there would have to be some reason.

It mostly has something to do with the coding. Like the best example I can think of is in Pokemon Red and Green there was a supposed evolutionary line of Cubone > Marowak > Kangazkhan but the developers were like "actually no lets not do that" (or something) and they removed Kangazkhan from the evolutions and after they did that the Missing No. glitch was created (and as any Pokemon fan knows, that glitch is the most famous one).

Like, maybe they can't take the removed content out of the coding in case they screw up a different part of the game which does something horrible to the player.

I dunno o.o

I have a question. Why do you even care? Ha ha. Espicially for Kingdom Hearts for example, it made no impact to you whether they left the content there or not, I'd prefer them to keep it, gave us an insight to what they were planning and was cool to see.

Not sure about the impact of leaving unfinished content in size matters, so cant comment on that, but if it was an annoyance to be there I guess they should have took it out.

As for why they leave it, I'm guessing, (At least for KH), its difficult to take it out, maybe they'd have to change the load order of everytihing or something. Or maybe they just left it in for people to see what they were planning on doing?

Would be an interesting question to ask Square Enix.

I care because I'm a Kingdom Hearts fan who is able to ask questions. The load theory seems reasonable because they added titles to all the places you can't visit such as Villain's Vale for example. They do this likely so the right cutscene can load.

Yeah, I don't know why too... But when we turn into famous game developers, we'll know the answer for sure!

Well at least other people don't know either so that makes me a "Not-idiot" :D.

Its basically that. If they remove content there is a possibility that they will accidentally crash the whole game. Literally the whole game. So basically I wouldnt complain about little glitches if you like a game mostly due to the fact that they might have tried to remove them and then crashed the whole game file.

It usually comes down to time constraints or laziness.

Glitches are usually caused by time constraints, meanwhile, it's often more trouble than it's worth to remove unused files from a game.

Have you ever tried coding? It's kinda hard... Maybe they just can't remove or fix those things.

Coding's a bitch. It's that simple.

Not only would it be hard to find that little scrap of data in your mammoth of a game code, but it may very well be integrated into the system, even if it's not functional. Deleting an entire world like The Jungle Book could have serious reprecussions on the rest of the game. And then the only use for your awesome game disc is an awesome game coaster for when guests come over.

Like I thought... laziness.

And I never imagined they wouldn't be able to find the glitch in their game code. You learn something new everyday.

Oh and yeah, I have tried coding but only on a PSP.

When dealing with unusable contect or glitches, it is very harr to take those out without destoring alot more than the thing you are taking out in the game so they leave it in hidden in the game so they dont ruin other parts of the game.

Heh, finding glitches in code is hard, even when you're making something small. Can you imagine finding the one wrong phrase, or typo, or oversight in thousands upon thousands of lines of code?

For example, you mentioned walls you can walk through. There's a very distinct chance that the problem is in the fundamental collision detection code, you don't exactly want to redo something as vital as that; you'll probably just make new, worse glitches.

maybe they run out of time and they decide that its best for them to leave their product like this, just a guess though :)

I didnt mean care to ask a question, I meant care as if it negatively impacts you, which it really doesnt. I am however curious why content is left on. Most obvious reason seems to be its more work than it seems to remove them. I think even if they had a need to remove them (e.g. disc space), they may have only removed some of it. I think its cool they leave some stuff on it, instant KH attention then. Imagine if theres some pixar unfinished worlds on KH3D's cartridge? (Unlikely though) Instant major KH attention there.

Because they're lazy and it takes time. Would you really want to wait longer for a game to come out just so that they could remove these things? I don't think so.

Eh, good point. I forgot that they aren't robots.

I think stuff like this is cool. Example: Pokemon Platinum. There was a flawed event that Nintendo never released the item to start. Using the power of cheats I got the item and encountered Arceus. Sure, it can't be traded in Platinum, Diamond, Pearl, Soul Silver or Heart Gold, but it can in Black and White. Not to mention some glitches and such can get you past difficult levels.

Superman 64 is a very old game. So, using that game as an example and then saying that Video Game developers are lazy "these days" is not a very good argument. You don't know for a fact, that they don't attempt to move it, because you don't work in video game development. In fact, you have very little knowledge in this subject, otherwise you would not be asking these questions. You assume that they don't make attempts, because you are a fan who doesn't actually know anything about developing a video game, but yet you know ENOUGH to call them lazy. Yeah, they're lazy despite putting their time into making games with such intricate details that will take us days on end to beat them.
