What is better in the zelda series, innovation or nostalgia?

Recommended Posts

I think that nostalgia is would work better in the zelda series because it makes the player remember things in previous zelda games. It makes the player remember all of the memories that they had with an game that they really remember as a child and lets them experience it in a different view. A Link Between Worlds did an excellent job with nostalgia. What do you think is better?

Innovation. Nostalgia should never be the primary focus in making a game. I'd much rather have something with fresh, new ideas than rehash of what we've seen before. Sure, that's fine once in a while (Haven't played ALBW yet, but it looks fantastic and I really want to play it), but it should always be paired with innovation. ALBW featured the item store and the ability to visit dungeons in any order you want, for example.

However, Zelda DOES need to return to its roots in terms of exploration. That aspect has been dead for a long time now.

I do agree with that. It would just be like a remake of zelda u, but with more innovation. The zelda series did get enough nostalgia when every link wore the same cloths and so on and so forth. Zelda U should be more like super mario galaxy because it was innovative and a lot of people actually like the new idea.

A Galaxy-type thing for Zelda (I don't mean the same gameplay, just the innovation that Galaxy made for the Mario games) would be fantastic. Zelda U sounds good so far, although I'm personally holding off until we can see more footage before I make my first thoughts on the game. Not to say I have any doubts about the game, I'm sure it's going to be fantastic. I'm really hoping that they'll use ALBW as a foundation for the future games, since the exploration aspect sounds like it was brought back for that. I'd love to see them re-use the idea of taking on the dungeons in any order.

Since everybody will have a different stategy on playing zelda u, i've heard that the game will work differently depending on how you play it.

I think both concepts are equally important.  Nostalgia allows us to appreciate the appeal of older games in the series, while innovation brings new things to the table, bringing interesting new concepts to each new installment.  So in essence, the Zelda series thrives on nostalgia and innovation! :3

I'm pretty sure its the same for every video game serie and not just Zelda, but I think innovation should always be a priority, but nostalgia should not be neglected. When you relie too much on nostalgia you end up with games like Mega Man 6,New Super Mario Bros U,Tales of Symphonia Dawn of the New world or Final Fantasy IV The After Years, they are not bad games(Well ToS Dawn of the new world is kinda bad) ,but they feel so similar to the previous entries in the serie that the games feels repetitive and gets boring really fast.
