Anime | Manga ABC News blames "Soul Eater" for house fire

Recommended Posts

Wow, she was reading the Soul Eater manga! that doesn't mean sh*t! She could've thought of it for a long time!

Maybe I didn't get what they said right...but isn't she the one who said she was inspired by Soul Eater? They didn't just throw that in, she told them that she was inspired by the manga.

I'm glad the victims are safe. I feel really bad for them.

I love how they act like they know exactly why she did it. Soul Eater didn't even have a scene similar to this, I don't know how seeing Maka and Soul fight (Assuming that's what went on) would lead to her doing this...

Nope, they just threw it in. They didn't include anything saying she specifically blamed the manga. She never mentioned Soul Eater, the manga didn't even HAVE a scene involving someone burning a house down. It wouldn't have made that connection.

Well they said, and I quote: "She told them she had a fight with her mom last night and then was influenced by a violent online book called Soul Eater." I don't know if you're a fan of the series, but that's what inspired her. Well that's what she told the authorities.

Whoops, missed that part.

Well, that's her own freaking problem if she thinks Soul Eater justifies burning an entire house down. That's just going to give Soul Eater fans such as myself a bad reputation. Most of us wouldn't even think of doing anything like that. My brother and I get into arguments a lot, but I don't do anything to him because I read Soul Eater. Like I said earlier, there's nothing in the manga about burning a house down.

I totally agree! I mean everybody sees violent things, doesn't we're all going to turn into killers. I agree that saying it happened because of the manga is wrong. The girl is the one to blame. She needs help.

Exactly. I get a really bad feeling that the whole thing about Soul Eater is going to be blown out of proportion, and everyone's going to get the wrong idea about it. This isn't helping the stupid belief that video games and anime/manga are evil and influencing young minds or whatever people say about them these days... I get the feeling I won't even be able to walk around with a Soul Eater volume anymore without people jumping me for liking such a horrible, violent book.

While she might say Soul Eater inspired her, there is nothing about that series that influences kids to BURN DOWN THEIR FREAKING HOUSES WITH THEIR FAMILIES INSIDE. So she saw two characters fighting and that's what drove her to kill. What, are we going to ban characters from fighting in media? Soul Eater is not some special snowflake that has people fight each other. Thousands of books, manga, comics, TV Shows, movies, so on and so forth, include physical conflict. Violence is a driving force of plot, and is something heavily ingrained in human society (unless we want to ignore millennia of slavery and war).

The girl was disturbed. If she had read literally anything else with violence in it, it probably would've been the same story. Soul Eater just so happened to be the one she chose. I can't help but wonder, however, what would've happened if she had read something popular, like The Hunger Games or something.

This is just as bad as back when Pokemon was getting popular and a lot of people have their opinions about it...

Just as bad... how exactly? I don't recall Pokemon ever driven someone to burn down a house.

First news people blame video games for school shootings, then they say mangas child's porn, now they are blaming Soul Eater for house burning.

what has the world come to?

ABC News didn't blame anyone or anything. That's what the girl said. She told them she was inspired by Soul Eater.

Blame America. They are not in their right minds

I'm sick of this. Who wants to move to Japan with me where Anime/Manga is not discriminated?

I want to move to Japan, but not for manga/anime. I want to move over there for culture and design.

No no no...

Ok, let me correct myself. The whole thing about that girl burning the house because of Soul Eater, that's badder than the whole negative talk about Pokemon years ago.

Since Soul Eater is anime and so is Pokemon, I brought up Pokemon because this news report reminds me of when I was little and was into Pokemon. I recall some kids and grownups at the daycare I went to, have some negative opinions about Pokemon. Not only that, my mom heard some talk about churches talking about Pokemon. (If you get what I'm getting at.) And then comes that one video I saw on You Tube about some Pastor preaching about how bad Pokemon is. Kids fighting over Pokemon cards; something like that.

It also reminds me years ago, of one of my online friends said something about a kid dying buried alive in (I think in a sand box by a relative or friend) all because of what they saw in Naruto. I think that was a rumor she said.

I bet that they'd leave out the Hunger Games bit if that's what it was...

I'd love if something like this happened with Kingdom Hearts. Like just the way he tried explaining Soul Eater I imagine Kingdom Hearts would be like "She was playing this violent video game where you have to fight black things and a silver haired guy with a giant key shaped weapon and that's what triggered it."

Considering how badly they butchered Soul Eater ("A violent online book"), I doubt KH's description could be much worse...
