Does anyone else think Lilo & Stitch should have been in Dream Drop Distance instead of the Grid?

Posted

Ever since Tron 3 was cancelled, I've been thinking about what a wasted opportunity it was to feature Tron Legacy in KHDDD when they could've gone out with a bang by fully realizing it with next-gen graphics on the PS4. It would have been a great opportunity to properly show how good the PS4 technology could be - provided Port Royal didn't reappear, which it might - to have fully realistic human characters alongside the stylized Disney ones. The PS2 did this pretty well, but it was limited, obviously, by its technology.

So, it got me thinking which world would have been better suited for DDD instead of the Grid and it finally dawned on me that they should have replaced Tron Legacy with Lilo & Stitch. We got to see the first 15 minutes of the movie with Deep Space in Birth by Sleep but we never got a proper adaptation of the property in the game, the end credits just show Stitch arriving in their world and then he just randomly shows up in KHII. It would have been really cool, I feel, to have Sora and Riku go through the dreams of Lilo & Stitch's world and relive the rest of the film. It'd be a nice cap on Stitch's arc in the KH series and be really the only way they could possibly adapt the movie since it was introduced in BBS.

Dream Drop Distance has to have something memorable about it and The Hunchback Of Notre Dame and Tron Legacy is what distinguishes 3D from the rest of the titles. Granted, both these worlds could have been better represented in KH3, but, what can you do: Nomura logic. That doesn't mean to say that they cannot appear in KH3, because, those two worlds were submerged in sleep.

I love Lilo and Stitch but the island is a terrible concept of a world. It's another Destiny Islands. Square Enix did the right thing by making Lilo and Stitch be represented in space (and in that game too). Besides, Stitch had plenty of screen time for Kingdom Hearts 2 as he was involved with the plot (defending Radiant Garden from the 1000 Heartless).

If Lilo and Stitch return then it should be based on the final instalment of the Lilo and Stitch series: Leroy and Stitch. Now it'd be fun to battle against Leroy (the evil clone of Stitch) and see all of the other experiments.

Wait, so Lilo & Stitch can't appear in KH because it's too similar to Destiny Islands but if it's Leroy and Stitch it's okay?

Besides, Destiny Islands barely appeared in DDD (for a minute or so in a few cutscenes) That's kind of like saying Hollow Bastion couldn't be what it is in KHII because they had Traverse Town in KHI. And I wouldn't really call 'shows up randomly and gets a cutscene of him shooting Heartless' as really being part of the plot so much as a glorified cameo appearance. (which is more than what Chicken Little got, I'll grant you that)

I agree that, for BBS, having it set on the ship was a smart move, but I feel it is a missed opportunity not to finish the story in DDD. Lilo & Stitch after the beginning is mostly set on Earth, which is a prime reason why it would work on a portable system more than the Grid which should be this HUGE amazing world when in reality it's just...not. Hawaii is supposed to be a smaller collection of islands, perfect for Flowmotion but not limited by hardware like, say, Notre Dame. It LOOKS big if you squint your eyes and try to see past the lack of AA, but not as good as it could have been.

Plus, I kind of think it'd be interesting to see Sora and Riku comment on how similar Hawaii is to their own home. I think it'd be nice to see them realize that their island home is not the only 'small world' in the universe, but it's part of something much bigger regardless.

Yeah, thinking about it The Grid would be much better on an HD console it all its sexy glory. On 3DS it stuck out because it was a pretty cool world by itself, but PS4 would do it so much more justice. I'd say they should just do the expected Lilo and Stitch Hawaii level soon because it's a bit overdue. Maybe they can just say the BBS stuff happened like very early on and that Stitch didn't get exiled til Earth until recently. Would be pretty easy to see Lilo trust Sora, Donald, and Goofy after seeing that Stitch recognizes him. However I would be OK without a Lilo and Stitch world. It would seem a bit odd to see Heartless in the midst of Hawaii in a more modern day based movie and plus Stitch is one of those few non-Mickey Disney characters who has appeared outside of his own world and seemingly has had an actual role. I'm okay with just seeing Stitch as his own little deal in KH. Maybe he was exiled to Radiant Garden or Hollow Bastion?

Wait, so Lilo & Stitch can't appear in KH because it's too similar to Destiny Islands but if it's Leroy and Stitch it's okay?

Chicken Little is an abomination of a movie, the less we have of him the better. I said use Leroy and Stitch not "The World Of Leroy and Stitch". Sparky was featured from Stitch Has A Glitch and that was the sequel (and not the original movie) for Deep Space's debut. Leroy can be featured in Radiant Garden just like Stitch. We don't need Hawaii in Kingdom Hearts 3 because it takes the slot of a world that's much more deserving of it.

Honestly, Hawaii would be boring. Really think about it, what part of "Hawaii" from the movie made you think "Hey, this would totally stand out in Kingdom Hearts 3!". Walt Disney Movies/Animation has a fantastic library of movies and worlds perfect for Kingdom Hearts 3. I really don't want to look like a negative party pooper here but the Lilo and Stitch world has already done everything that it can to represent the unique part of the movie. Hawaii has nothing to offer.

What could you possibly do in Hawaii?

However, I agree with your perspective of the Grid needing to be in Kingdom Hearts as opposed to Dream Drop Distance.

I feel like they have to continue the story of The Grid somehow, even if there won't be a third movie. It just feels unfinished.

Honestly, I'm fine with how things are right now.  I'm just hoping that Lilo and Stitch appear in Kingdom Hearts III, and we get to go to the island of Hawaii to play out the rest of that film's story!  I've always wanted that to happen, and it may have a chance of happening in Kingdom Hearts III! :D

And Komali is right, The Grid should return, at the very least to let Sora's arc with Tron close, since it was left unfinished in KH3D.  Sora thought Tron died, so that has to have hit him hard in his heart!

I personally was not a huge fan of the grid because of the similar design on every structure and the vastness of the world was just overwhelming to me so I would've loved to visit a Lilo and Stitch world. With Stitch being a summon in KH2 and his world being a decent one in BBS, I think it deserved a follow-up but I understand the Grid being added because it was pretty popular with a lot of fans

In terms of narrative, The Grid had to be in DDD, they had those plot points about data having hearts, and how data can't dream

It's not like anything stood out in The Grid in DDD

Fight heartless

But Dream Drop Distance is a Kingdom Hearts Game

In a world that's identical to Destiny Islands? Even Home On The Range would be a more special location than Hawaii and that movie is one of Disney's worst of all time.

what makes it identical? the aliens? the hawaiian culture? the art style?

none of those things?

The aliens were in Space (Deep Space)... all that happened in Hawaii was Lilo bonding with Stitch, sure, the villain was chasing them down but a fight against him already happened in Birth By Sleep (with Aqua). And yes, the art style is too similar. That's like saying Deep Jungle and The Jungle Book should be in Kingdom Hearts. They're both forest's but one's African and another's Indian: it isn't justified enough to return.

I haven't seen Lilo and Stitch in ages and even I remember there were more aliens than Stitch in Hawaii. They had an entire cartoon about it

and your rules are too basic "There's a beach, there;s another beach. There can be only one beach"

Never mind that Destiny Islands is hardly ever playable in KH games, or the fact that Destiny Islands is a single area, or the fact that Jungle Book almost made it into Kh, or the fact that MANY jungles found their way into KH. Hawaii is still distinct enough by merit of its characters. That's infinitely more significant than whether or not they both have a shore and plants

Many jungles? I'm pretty sure you mean forests (Dwarf Woodlands, Enhcanted Dominion). And those similar forest worlds only made it because they were the worlds of The Princess Of Hearts. Regardless, each to their own, I personally believe that Lilo and Stitch has already made its impact in the series.

There are forests, too. I was thinking of Neverland. There are also a lot of castles. Deep Space and The Grid are about as similar as Destiny Islands adn Hawaii

And yeah, Stitch has made its impact, but the arc hasn't been concluded

The difference is, Deep Space was in Birth By Sleep and The Grid was in Dream Drop Distance. And to clarify, they're not similar at all. One is space and the other is a video game world. The original Lilo and Stitch arc doesn't need to be concluded because it won't translate to well for Kingdom Hearts. All the ending really was is that Stitch accepts Hawaii as his new home. Lilo can't really do much because she's just an ordinary girl in Kingdom Hearts standard.

That's the only good reason I can think of for why the Grid makes sense in DDD as opposed to KHIII. I still think it was something of a missed opportunity in both cases, but nothing that ruins the franchise.

Agreed. I feel like, if we're returning to Radiant Garden (and I'm 100% positive we will be) at the very least, Space Paranoids & Tron should return in some capacity, at least a mention or cameo appearance. The franchise was essential to the Radiant Garden storyline in KHII (making it one of the most important Disney films to be represented in KH) and it'd be a disservice to never speak of it again because Disney decided not to greenlight a third movie. But idk

Just because there isn't a third movie doesn't mean that Tron cannot be represented in some capacity. I can see one of two things happening.

1) Rinzler working for Maleficent. This may seem really out of the blue until you come to realise that Maleficent is looking for the Book Of Prophecies. If she was to find it then she can recreate in her image. Through that process, she could be reviving certain Disney villains with the Book Of Prophecies. Rinzler may be one of those candidates as she may have been able to see all of the different Disney worlds that Sora's been travelling and cherry pick the best recruits for her new army.

2) Tron making an appearance in a Wreck-It Ralph world. This too may seem obscure, however, they're both video game worlds. Characters from Tron Legacy could be at Game Central Station and they may actually be more plot relevant (like Stitch in Kingdom Hearts 2) as opposed to just sticking to their world.

I'm just throwing my two cents here.
