Another thing to remember: You get Sazh before Lightning. At the halfway point you get Sazh, then at the end, you Get Lightning.

 

And the stages give loads of Growth Eggs, so one strategy you can use to get Lightning quicker is to save your Growth eggs for Sazh, then use all of them on him. That way, you can immediately start breezing through the stages using Sazh, since he, Snow, Vanille, and Lightning are the only ones who are capable of getting a decent boost from the record, aside from the respective weapons from XIII.
