Square Enix's future PS2 Classic possibilities

Posted

After a bit of research I've gone through all of Square Enix's PS2 games and ranked them in order how likely they will be re-released as PS2 Classics. Anything not here I've ruled out. Of course, there may be licensing issues for a title here that we don't know about. I am not listing Eidos games here either.

Likely

Dirge of Cerberus -Final Fantasy VII-

Front Mission 4

Drakengard

Drakengard 2

Good chance

Musashi: Samurai Legend

Front Mission 5: Scars of the War - Japan

Dawn of Mana

Unlimited SaGa - Japan

Star Ocean: Till the End of Time

Decent chance

The Bouncer

Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria

Radiata Stories

Romancing SaGa - North America

Grandia III - North America

Code Age Commanders: Tsugu Mono Tsuga Reru Mono - Japan

Unlimited SaGa - North America & Europe/Australia

Robot Alchemic Drive

Grandia Xtreme - North America

Every game you just said, I have never even heard of! Sorry! ¯_(ツ)_/¯

But on the bright side, made some real classics that everyone has heard of will be released as PS2 classics!

Well you just don't know Square Enix well then.

No I dont, because I mainly like Square for KH, Tomb Raider, and Hitman, and the XIII FF games. Also, do you really think everyone knows Square Enix? No, I don't think they do. Square isn't as popular as Disney where it is known by everyone on the planet.

I've got my hopes set on Evil Dead: Regeneration, but that's probably stupid of me...

Maybe at least immortal Ring, or Silent Hill 2 (Original version, not that HD crap)

I'm not saying anyone does. No need to randomly bring Disney in this.

Talking about Square Enix here mate.

Alright.

I was just saying ones I'd like to see on the PS2 classics. Still on topic, S.E. or not.

No chance of FF12 huh? I'm hoping that game gets re-released with the option to change inverted camera. I want to play it so bad. O_O

No, it'll get a HD remaster.

I would absolutely love to play Drakengard and its sequel again. I haven't played them in years and I want to see if they hold up.

That's even better. Would be great if they do it.

I'm sure they're already doing it.

It's funny to see that I only recognise FFVII Dirge of Cerberus, Star Ocean and Valkyrie Profile.

I've quoted it so you don't have to repeat yourself XDDD.

Well too bad Dirge of Cerberus isn't getting any enhancement, but at least it's available to play 2 generations up. Although really I'd like a follow up to that secret ending. Maybe VII Remake will spark the interest for a sequel, not another spin-off like the last few, I mean like a literal VII-2, because the fact that they just kind of dropped things after Crisis Core still kind of bugs me.

They did ACC. Dirge of Cerberus did shocking.

ACC isn't the furthest in the series tho. Dirge of Cerberus was, and it teased a further continuation with a scene showing Genesis picking up Weiss saying something along the lines that things will happen "soon". It mostly teased Genesis from Crisis Core coming up, but the fact that he's still alive and has something in mind for Weiss (calling him "brother" and everything) would suggest at some point they at least thought about furthering the story, be it through one more game or another movie or whatever. My point is that I hope that we can see that some day, because it just sucks when a series ends on a cliffhanger like that.

I would fall in love with a Drakengard Remastered collection! <3 This needs to happen, Drakengard 2 has one of the greatest storylines in Square Enix's library.

Technically, you're into the British Division of Square Enix which used to be its own gaming company called Eidos before being purchased by Square Enix.

Till the End of Time would be a god sent; I would finally be able to put my dying PS2 to rest.

Dirge of Cerberus did horrible though. That's why they haven't done anything with it.

It's not going to happen. Drakengard games never did well.

Well from that point on DC was irrelevant. What matters is that the story was meant to go beyond it. That's like saying that KH3 was canceled because a majority of the KH fanbase didn't like Re:Coded. My point here is that there could always be the possibility that should VII Remake do well enough in both sales and reception, and should they still have that plan available or they have some new ambition beyond the remake, a "true" FF VII-2 could possibly become real. Like a definite conclusion to the storyline, no more cliffhangers, every loose end finally being tied up. But, getting ahead of myself. One miracle at a time.

It's not going to happen. Drakengard games never did well.

Square Enix's policy is to revive old IP's. Creating a remastered collection for all the Drakengard games would be the best way to revive old IP's.

Square are well aware that there is a fanbase for the franchise, if it really was as bad you say it was, they would have been no Drakengard 3 for the PS3.

Drakengard 3 had a tiny budget and did shocking.

Additionally, the producer of the Drakengard series is busy with other projects while the director doesn't even work for the company.

That's a very pessimistic outlook. HD Remasters don't take much effort as all the assets are already in place, and besides, a bundle collection of three games in one would make Drakengard profitable enough for it to stay relevant again (as long as Square Enix provide a respectable amount of marketing towards the game),

Who says they have the assets? In case you forgot, the studio closed. And the games have never had a decent budget. They would look even worse on PS4.

Anyway, it's all up to Takamasa Shiba.

Just because a studio closed doesn't mean that they've lost all of the assets and documentation that went alongside the games. Square Enix owns the rights to the Drakengard franchise and they can easily get somebody to replace Takashama Shiba as it is their IP. When it comes to remastering, Square Enix are professionals at that field (granted, Type 0's NPC character models were horrendous, however, that's an entirely different case). They can just provide a brighter colour pallet to sort out the dullness and rework the textures and certain models so that they look presentable upon the PlayStation 4.

It's something you can't rule out.

They could, but who in Square Enix cares about Drakengard? Star Ocean nearly died and it's bigger than Drakengard because hardly anyone cared. SE kinda likes Shiba btw, they do make him run one of their divisions. It's all up to him.

Square Enix doesn't do their remasters internally. Only Nomura does for some stupid reason.
