  1. Probably been asked before, but I'm genuinely interested to see everyone's responses. Are there any characters you like from FF that you thought they should've included?
  2. This month I was lucky enough to interview DotEmu, a French-based video game company founded in 2007. DotEmu have been working with Square Enix for many years now porting many classic FINAL FANTASY games to PC via Steam. Last year they also ported FINAL FANTASY VII to PlayStation 4, which was the third most downloaded PS4 title on the PlayStation Store in North America for December 2015. It also charted in Europe at #9. Their PC ports have also sold quite well according to SteamSpy. In the interview I confirmed with them what Square Enix titles they have ported, who they worked with at Square Enix, what it’s like working with Square Enix and porting these classic games and more. Big thanks to DotEmu’s CEO, Cyrille IMBERT for being kind enough to answer the questions, their Communication & Marketing Manager Jessica IRAGNE and the rest of the team at DotEmu. You can read the interview here.
  3. i was bored and decided to make a boxart for The Hopeful Lightning saga i really want this to happen i hope there is a limited edition of it too with the novels fully translated in English
  4. PlayStation's holding a big sale on the PlayStation Store for Europe/Australia. Among the titles featured are many Final Fantasy games including Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. These are 50% off. Already got them? The 3rd Birthday, Lord of Arcana and many, many others are also on sale.
  5. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII is an RPG exclusive to the PlayStation Portable released in Japan in 2007 and worldwide in 2008. In Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII players assume the role of SOLDIER 2nd Class Zack Fair who then shortly switches to 1st Class. Throughout the game players will learn the past of Final Fantasy VII, get more detail on who the "Zack" fella from the original actually is, and learn more about the history of essential characters like Cloud, Tifa, Aerith, and Sephiroth. After playing the game twice I am able to point out all the good things to be had about it. First off I can say the graphics are definitely nice considering this is a PSP game developed around 9 years ago. The CG looks as good as the Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children film and the gameplay and normal look are on par with PS2 graphics. Environments look quite crisp and lend well to the PSP's display. The PSP's limited hardware result in a fair amount of cutscenes needing to use speech bubbles, but the important scenes and a fair amount of non-important scenes will also give you voices. The story is quite great. We finally delve into the past of Zack Fair who only briefly appeared in the original Final Fantasy VII. We also see a good bit of Cloud's past along the way, and how he himself became a part of SOLDIER. During the game it seems that Cloud is a little less shy than he was when we first met him, which is understandable since many things have yet to occur. We learn that Aerith (or in original Final Fantasy VII terms Aeris) used to have a close relationship with Zack. Even turning romantic at a certain point, but not in a heavily emphasized way. Tifa's appearances aren't critical to the story (except for one certain event with Sephiroth which is a recap of something we saw previously), but they do show us that she used to be much different than we previously knew, but at the same time relatively the same. Sephiroth, believe it or not, was a somewhat nice guy back then! Well, for awhile anyway... But even then he was definitely one of the most skilled people at Shinra. I can't go into much detail beyond that as I would spoil critical story elements, but I can say that the story is deep, thrilling, exciting, and offers a whole new background to the world of Final Fantasy VII! The ending is quite emotional, and is something that is certain to make you shed a tear. The gameplay was something I found quite enjoyable, Zack has many Materia commands available for use. Some slow, some fast. Some are even for stat improvement. The Materia Fusion system allows Zack to combine two materia to make a completely new type of materia, which at times is very useful for things like obtaining powerful attacks early on in the game. There's a unique mechanic that comes in handy on a number of occasions called DMW (Digital Mind Wave.) This is where Zack uses his memories of a certain character to activate a special attack. Each character activates a different attack and is unlocked on the DMW as the story progresses. Some entries are optional. The DMW is activated at random, but it's chances of activating can be heightened depending on the situation. During events where Zack is thinking heavily of a certain character he will have a better chance of activating them in the DMW and using their attack. Though the DMW has a chance of failing it is mostly successful. This mechanic is also how Zack himself levels up by getting all 7's for the numbers. Everything is somewhat strategic, yet action-packed. Ultimate attacks used by summoned creatures such as Bahamut or Ifrit include CG scenes which also look very nice and add to the intensity to the battles. There are no optional weapons, but Zack does start to use the Buster Sword at a certain point. Music and sound effects are definitely a fitting tribute to the series. Many of the tracks are new, but some are revised versions of old ones. They all capture the essential feel of game's universe and bring us right back to those spine-chilling moments from the original PlayStation title. Sound effects such as menu scrolling and walking are spot on as well. Voice acting is no doubt right on the mark. Every character sounds completely authentic and the actors did a good job capturing necessary emotion in both the Japanese and English voice cast! However one scene with Cloud in the English VA during the ending did lack intensity, but it's not a huge problem. Verdict: Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII is a wonderful edition to the Final Fantasy VII storyline that fully utilizes the PSP's hardware to offer unique gameplay, a thrilling and emotional story, and a whole new light on the Final Fantasy VII franchise. It is a journey that any fan of the series or JRPG goer in general should take. I would LOVE to see an HD remaster on PS4. 10/10
  6. With the year over let's take a look at the sales in Japan for Final Fantasy titles in 2015. Wasn't many releases though. Haha. All numbers are from Famitsu. From my understanding this does not include digital. Final Fantasy Type-0 HD sold 128,447 copies on PlayStation 4 Final Fantasy Explorers sold an additional 53,383 copies on Nintendo 3DS bringing it to 265,587 copies. Will be interesting to see how it performs in North America & Europe/Australia with the 3DS in likely its last year of being relevant. Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster sold 32,922 copies on PlayStation 4. Only other things to crack the top 381 were FFXIV releases which sold around 55,000 copies combined. Majority for PS4.
  7. Through the ages, the Victory Fanfare for the beloved series Final Fantasy has changed many times, from Final Fantasy 1 to Final Fantasy 14, including games that don't quite fall under the "Numbered" games like Final Fantasy: Four Heroes of Light. But tell me, which of all of these Victory Fanfares are your #1 favorite, within the series? Here are is a good number of the "Numbered" games' Victory Music. But you can choose from any of the games not listed as well, such as Final Fantasy 11, and even the Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales. Personally, I have a tie between three different Fanfares. The ones I chose are from: 3, 6, and 10 (FF 10-1). Rock on!
  8. SteamDB has listings for the following titles: FINAL FANTASY XIII Demo Final Fantasy Franchise Advertising App The second one also came with this image: Sounds like they might be porting the Final Fantasy Portal App to Steam. The Final Fantasy XIII demo sounds odd now considering it's now sold 500,000 copies on Steam.
  9. The Game Boy Advance collection of Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy II is coming to the Nintendo Wii U Virtual Console in Japan on January 6.
  10. Square Enix Europe is holding a big sale on their online store. Among the titles on sale are Final Fantasy XIII (50% off) Final Fantasy XIII-2 (50% off) Murdered: Soul Suspect (75% off), Tomb Raider (75% off) and many more.

  13. I'm seeing that a lot on the internet so I'm bringing it here. SE Japan did a survey asking fans about Final Fantasy XV. The 47th question asked if P5 & FFXV came out at the same time, which would you get. Personally (lol) I would get Persona 5 because I'm more into that series than Final Fantasy. Also, realizing this now, that survey might affect when Final Fantasy XV is release and either delay or push up the release date next year. Source: Siliconera
  14. The 30th anniversary of the Final Fantasy series will occur in 2017. Here's how it's shaping up. The almost certain Dissidia - the arcade game should hit PS4 with even better graphics, more characters and stages, enhanced gameplay and a scenario. FFXIV 4.0 - A brand new expansion pack should be released for FFXIV. They might drop PS3 support here. Obviously they'll release other updates/patches too. Final Fantasy XV - "Game of the Year edition". They'll probably release a sort of GOTY edition with all the patches and DLC included. DLC is likely to carry over into 2016 judging by Tabata's comments on DLC. The likely Final Fantasy XII HD Remaster should be released on PlayStation 4 & Xbox One. If there's any life left in it, PlayStation Vita is also possible. It's possible they will include Motomu Toriyama's Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings in some form. The Lightning Saga could be released on PlayStation 4 & Xbox One. However this is also something that could also easily be released in 2016 or 2018. More mobile spin-offs: love them or hate them they make Square Enix a gigantic amount of money and that should continue with more games and more updates. More ports: Square Enix is always porting Final Fantasy games and this should continue. Think Final Fantasy III, IV, IV: TAY, V and VI on PlayStation 4. Final Fantasy VIII's PC version should also get more ports similar to VII, for iOS, Android & PlayStation 4. Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster could make its way to Steam as well, maybe even iOS & Android. However keep in mind a lot of these could also easily be released in 2016 or 2018. Hiroyuki Ito's Final Fantasy XVI is likely to be announced. Ito could also pull a 'Fallout 4' but the man is a perfectionist so I'd expect it in 2018. The wildcards Final Fantasy VII Remake. It's of course the 20th anniversary of the original game and has been in development since Lightning Returns wrapped up. However we know how slow Nomura is and all his comments point towards it being further away. Another Motomu Toriyama directed title. It's always possible the highest selling director in Final Fantasy history and maybe even Square Enix history has another new Final Fantasy game coming not including his almost certain work on VII Remake. If X-3 is happening, it's his. Same can be said if they want to remake Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings in some way. Final Fantasy IV Interlude remake. Takashi Tokita could easily get Matrix Software to remake Interlude. This could easily happen in 2016 or 2018 as well though. HD remasters of Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy II. Only FF titles from I-VIII not in HD and of course it's their 30th anniversaries in 2017 and 2018 respectively. The longshots Final Fantasy IX. It's a long shot to see a re-release of IX. We have no clue what state the game is in. If it's in the same state as VII & VIII there's likely zero chance of a re-release outside of emulation. If it's in a similar state to say X there's a chance of a HD remaster, but it would take awhile. Additionally, the staff needed are likely already busy on XII HD and XVI. Final Fantasy V & VI remakes. Long shots due to the staff needed being busy with other projects. You really need Kitase & Ito to remake these. Good luck with that right now. Random spin-off for consoles. They might have outsourced a spin-off for consoles like a Tactics but I'd say it's unlikely. You also don't want to fatigue people. Already got a console spin-off in 2016 and one in 2017. Maybe 2018. HD remaster of Dirge of Cerberus. It's possible, but I doubt they'd want to put too much into it. Maybe just make it 16:9 and 1080p and add trophies and put on the PS Store. Before Crisis & Crisis Core. As much as people would like these, Tabata has said he doesn't want to remaster Crisis Core and would rather do a full remake. Additionally, Tabata's very busy with XV, Type-0 Online and a brand new IP after XV. He also said he does not want another 3rd Birthday-Type-0 situation.
  15. In an interview with Hajime Tabata, director of Final Fantasy XV, he was asked hypothetically if there was a game he'd like to work on as a member of the staff and he said Personally, that sounds awesome! It can kinda be like with Hyrule Warriors, have Tabata direct the game while having Eji Aonuma supervise. Source: Gamnesia
  16. In an interview to promote Final Fantasy X-2's international release, Yoshinori Kitase revealed "whether other sequels will be created is up to the director of each of the Final Fantasy titles". So if a Final Fantasy X-3 is created one day, it's up to Motomu Toriyama.

  18. As some of you may be aware, Square Enix is using visual motion capture to use in making the characters of FINAL FANTASY XV not only feel more alive, but personal. Square recently released a pdf of the presentation used at CEDEC 2015. It contains a ton of information on the visual works motion capture. You can find the pdf here, however note it is in Japanese primarily. Credit here
