  1. For all Power Ranger fans what are your thoughts on this?
  2. This is gonna be awesome ! Maybe a Movie of the Year candidate or something ?
  3. No, this is not me trying to write up some hackneyed creepypasta, this is a thing that actually happened. This is just a little bit of Disney/Pixar/film history I thought I'd share with you since there doesn't seem to be a thread of it already made on the site. So, do you remember how in the first Toy Story movie Woody was kind of a jealous asshat but still likable enough for us to sympathize with him by the end of the movie when he and Buzz Lightyear make up? Well imagine if he was a full on dick. Like, Lotso-esque. (In fact, I'm pretty sure the version of Woody you're about to see served a little inspiration for Lotso.) See, that was the original intention for his character, and the film itself was actually very mean-spirited in general because it was originally a more cynical, edgy take on a kids film. Yeah. One of the earliest forms of "edgelording" in film, I'm sure. This was all ordered by then Disney chairman Jeffrey Katzenburg by the way. You know, the guy who left the company some time after and went on to make Dreamworks which then spawned the cynical fairy tale potshot fest known as Shrek? Makes sense now, don't it? And that leads us to the "Black Friday Reel", a test screening of the movie done on, what else, Black Friday, specifically November 19, 1993. This was way before the animation process even began, so the entire thing is shown in storyboards with voice acting. Here's it is in full: This, of course, got backlashed by pretty much everybody down in Disney and even by John Lassiter himself (if the opening clip of the video didn't give it away ) and the entire film was re-written into the more homely smash hit blockbuster we know it as today. Imagine the timeline where Pixar and Disney decided to go ahead and stick with the original vision. Not only would everybody in Pixar be out of a job, but literally everything that Pixar has accomplished since this film would not have existed. All because of edge. 4. This right here is the trailer. Not the teaser I've posted, I think a week ago? I guess I was wrong about Cruz. But darn man. Why must things that exist in our younger years, must come to an end? If I cry watching this movie, just like Toy Story 3--man.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FlsPDZ1wZ5I
  5. I haven't done one of these in a while and I have a lot of thoughts to dispense on this "movie" given that I had the pleasure of seeing it on Christmas Day instead of, oh I don't know, Rouge One: A Star Wars Story or literally any other movie playing in the Goddamn theater at the time... You know what, I'm just going to jump into it, and spoiler alert: this plot is cliche as all f*ck and doesn't deserve a spoiler tab. Let's start with that actually. See, this film was directed and written by John Hamburg, writer of the "Meet the Parents" franchise and the Zoolander movies. I bring this up because this film is basically just another Meet The Parents. Like, an exact copy of Meet The Parents. The only differences are that the boyfriend is the antagonist instead of the dad and it feels like it's sucking away at your IQ points with all the sex, drugs, and bodily fluids injected into every other scene... Also, as you can see on the poster, Bryan Cranston is the dad and James Franco is the boyfriend? Yeah. Bryan Cranston. Walter White. Future incarnation of Zordon of Eltar. In this movie. James Franco, unfortunately, isn't very surprising because while I and other people love him to death, he's pretty much pigeonholed himself into these kinds of movies at this point... but Bryan f*cking Cranston??? Forget all of his former experience in comedy, I wouldn't wish this role on my least favorite comedian, because... *sigh*... this review is going to be nothing but me losing my shit unless I knuckle up a bit, so... let's just talk about the story... Except I'm NOT because there basically IS no f*cking story. Swerve! Yeah, I already called the plot cliche and frankly, it is. It's literally every single f*cking "disapproving dad" plot that you've seen before. Cranston as the dad is clean cut and traditional. Franco, the boyfriend, is a bare chest showing, foul-mouthed, douchebag zillionaire app/video game developer. They don't like each other for every reason you can think of. The boyfriend is "eccentric". Everybody but the dad warms up to him. He has a weird foreign servant played by Keegan Michael Key (who is literally the only bright spot in this movie above all us to no surprise...) Blah blah blah blah blah awkward first impressions blah blah blah blah blah daughter gets mad blah blah blah they go on hi-jinks and bond a little blah blah blah blah blah they fight blah blah blah everybody is upset blah blah blah blah blah f*cking Gene and Paul from KISS of all people show up and then cue sappy not-even-in-the-ballpark-of sentimentality wrap-up and they all lived happily ever after... uuuuuugggghh... By the way, you know how raunchy and offensive this film tries to be with its comedy? Early on, we see that the boyfriend has a dead moose hanging in one of the rooms and enclosed in a glass tank full of piss... because art, of course. Guess what happens when he and the dad get in a fight. G-guess what happens. No really, I want you to guess. Think for a second, think about everything you know about foreshadowing or Chekov's Gun and wrap your head around what that could possibly symbol-THE TANK BREAKS, PISS GOES EVERYWHERE, AND THE DEAD MOOSE FALLS ON THE SON WITH ITS BALLS LANDING DIRECTLY ON TOP OF HIS FACE. WHOOPDY FREAKING DOO, DIDN'T SEE THAT COMING, HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA... ... 2/10. I'm done. Someone just give me a ticket to go see Rouge One already, I'm begging you. DX Make the bad thoughts go away, make the bad thoughts go awaaaaay-haaay... *sobbing in corner while rocking back and forth in the feeble position*
  6. Today, the poster and first teaser trailer for the next Pokemon movie, titled Pokemon I Choose You, were both released! The Japanese release date it set to be July 15, 2017. No word on international releases yet. (Poster in spoiler tags as it's a large image) Source: http://www.serebii.net/ I honestly haven't followed the Pokemon movies in at least 10 years since I thought the Sinnoh movies were really boring, but this one seems really interesting to me. Between the teaser, poster image, music, and the title, it seems like it's going to be a sort of reboot of Ash's adventures in Kanto. The animation and art looked fantastic as well (Way better than that of the Sun/Moon anime, that's for sure). Can't wait to get more news on this movie, it looks really promising!
  7. Does the more Disney Movie Reward Points you have enable you to have more rewards to get or all all rewards available to you regardless of how many points you have?
  8. I'm sure that many of us have some sort of fictional work, a movie perhaps, that's had a major impact on our lives. Something that we love to death and that we never get tired of. Something we grew up with and that potentially shaped us as a person. For me, that would be the Star Wars films. I've been a fan ever since my mom and dad introduced me to the franchise at an incredibly young age with A New Hope (I wouldn't be surprised if it was the first movie I ever saw, this series is huge in my family). With Rogue One on the horizon and my annual watching of the films (which I should really start doing more than once a year), I thought that it'd be fun to share my thoughts on each of them as I watch them. I don't know if I'd really call this a review; I'm sure most of us have seen at least one of these movies at some point. It's really just a way of sharing my personal feelings on this incredible series, hence the quotation marks around the word "review" in the thread title as I had no clue what else to go with. My plan is to watch one of them a day starting today: I'll be doing the Original Trilogy, Prequel Trilogy, and then end off with The Force Awakens. If possible, I'd absolutely enjoy doing a little write-up for Rogue One after I see that one as well. Now, without further ado, let's go back a long time ago, to a galaxy far, far, away... Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (1977) The very first Star Wars movie, originally given the simple title of Star Wars but later given the subtitle Episode IV: A New Hope to fit in with the five other planned episodes of the saga, was a massive hit. Being born 20 years after its release, I didn't get to experience its roots first-hand, but even today, this film is incredibly iconic and popular. Inspired by prior science-fiction, Western, and Japanese Samurai films, A New Hope was able to successfully garner the attention of the masses and spawn two trilogies, two additional upcoming trilogies, and a massive Expanded Universe of content. To think that so much came out of this one movie is incredible, but every time I watch it, I'm reminded of just what makes it so great. To clarify for the purposes of this "review," The version I watched was the 1995 VHS release, which was the final release before George Lucas put the Special Edition into circulation and stopped producing the original cut. While none of the home releases were the exact same as the original theatrical release, any version released prior to the 1997 Special Edition set is about as close as you'll get. I'm not going to go into detail on the differences between the older releases and the Special Edition cuts, but for those unfamiliar, the Special Editions were George Lucas' way of expanding upon the films after their release through the usage of CGI. These editions of the movie are controversial among die-hard Star Wars fans (The most popular example being the "Han shot first" debate that's still raging to this day), but if you pick up a DVD or Blu-Ray release, it's going to be the Special Edition. I personally found these VHS copies over the Summer at a local Goodwill for $1 a piece, so if you're looking for them, thrift stores would be my recommendation. Now, with that out of the way, let's get to talking about the movie itself! For anyone who's been living under a rock for the past 39 years, let me give a quick synopsis of A New Hope's plot. The film tells the story of Luke Skywalker, a young man living with his uncle and aunt on their moisture farm on the desert planet of Tatooine. One day, he comes across two droids named R2-D2 and C-3PO, both of whom had been caught in the midst of a war between the oppressive Galactic Empire and the Rebellion. R2-D2 contains a message from Princess Leia, an important leader of the Rebellion: the message's intended reciver is a man named Obi-Wan Kenobi. Luke and the droids meet Ben Kenobi, an old hermit living in the Dune Seas of Tatooine, and learn that he is actually Obi-Wan, a former general in the Clone Wars and a Jedi Knight who knew Luke's father. This chain of events sets the four off on a journey across the galaxy where they meet smugglers Han Solo and Chewbacca, Princess Leia, and the evil Darth Vader. The film ends with the climactic battle between the Rebellion and the Empire to destroy the Empire's space station; while it ends in victory, Darth Vader is blasted away in his TIE Fighter beforehand, allowing him to survive... One of the greatest things about this film is the characters and their team dynamics. Each character develops: Luke goes from being a farm boy uncertain about his future to a courageous hero of the Rebellion, while Han begins as an uncaring smuggler who's only in it for the money but later decides to stay and help the team in their final battle, and those are just a couple of examples. Their interactions are genuine, and every major character feels important. In addition, the villain, Darth Vader, is an intimidating, cruel, and terrifying man. He doesn't get a whole lot of screentime, but every time we see him, he proves how threatening he is. Every character in this film is portrayed in an excellent way. The world-building is another one of my personal favorite aspects of the series, and it all begins here. Despite only really taking place on one planet, a moon, a space station, and a ship, the world itself feels expansive. The alien technology and terminology, the varying settings, and the vast shots of how huge this galaxy is really show how fleshed out this world feels. There are all sorts of alien species, from the Jawas to everyone's favorite Wookie, and no place brings this out as much as Mos Eisley. All sorts of varying aliens, people, and droids show up here; the cantina especially is filled with all sorts of interesting characters, even though many don't even speak a line of dialogue. It makes the world feel incredibly expansive and alive. This is probably what gave me a love for expansive, fleshed-out worlds in the first place: the world of Star Wars is massive and it's easy to get that sense. The special effects were yet another thing that made this movie incredible when it first came out, and still to this day. Back before CGI was such a widespread effect, the Star Wars team had to rely mostly on practical effects; the droids and aliens are all puppets or people in costumes, and this helps them seem more alive than they would be if they were simply CGI; for comparison, the CGI aliens added in the Special Edition just feel out of place. The ones in the original cut feel natural. Of course, the effects for the battles also worked. The smooth flight of the space ships, the bolts of blasters, and the iconic lightsaber were impressive for their time, and still look fantastic today. Even though their age shows a bit more these days, the effects still hold up very well. The sound effects are memorable as well: every shot of the blaster, the screech of a TIE Fighter, and the crackling of the lightsaber are sounds that are impossible to forget for fans of the franchise. The effects, visual and sound-related, made the movie even more alive. Of course, going off of the sound effects, it's impossible to give a detailed opinion piece on the paper without going into the music. John Williams' composition for the film is fantastic; the iconic main theme I included above is obviously the most memorable piece, but the entire soundtrack is incredible. The character themes fit their characters perfectly, the battle themes are just as tense or exciting as they need to be, and the concluding fanfare is the perfect piece to end the movie off on. There's probably a lot more that could be said about this movie, but I've gone on for long enough already. Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope is a cultural icon and one of the most influential and important films of all time; it's amassed many sequels, prequels, and a huge following, one that I'm proud to be a member of. Looking back on this movie, it's easy to see how it created such a massive franchise: all of its individual elements come together in a way that's unique, fun, and mesmerizing. How could anything possibly follow up after this movie? Well, we'll find that out tomorrow when I discuss Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back!
  9. This looks really interesting. What do you guys think?
  10. http://www.gamesradar.com/the-assassins-creed-movies-historical-sequences-are-all-in-spanish/ I didn't where to post this because it's game related Yes, you did read that right. Or, more appropriately ‘Si.’ All of the historical sequences of the Assassin’s Creed movie have been shot //in Spanish//. While the split between history and modern day is reversed in comparison to the games and there’s more in the 21st century than the 15th, this is still a big surprise. Hello, subtitles. “I just love the fact [production company] New Regency embraced it,” director Justin Kurzel explains in the new issue of Total Film magazine. “We did play around with English as well, but it was really obvious what you wanted as soon as you went back and started speaking beautiful Spanish. It really adds an exoticness and richness to the film.” The games have sometimes had an almost comedic approach to accents, especially with the cockney sounding guards stalking the streets of French Revolution Paris. Italian Ezio Auditore too has always had a, well, questionableaccent but it looks like Kurzel is focussing on realism for far more than just combat. The historical sequences, including a dramatic flaming scene where the Assassins are almost burnt at the stake during the auto-de-fe, are packed with painful looking hand to hand combat. Add in the very real wire free eagle dive I watched on the Assassin’s Creed movie set in Spain and there’s a realism here that no one could have expected. You can read the rest of the interview with Justin Kurzel along with stars Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, and Jeremy Irons in an exclusive Assassin’s Creed feature in the new issue of Total Film magazine. Pick up the new issue out on Friday or subscribe so you never miss an issue.
  11. Well, this definetly feels like MCU is putting their own spin on things. That's a very good thing. The last thing we need is another drawn out origin story for Spidey even though we've already gone through that entire process twice already. Speaking of: I'm not familiar with current Spider-Man comics, so maybe this is just throwing me off because of that, but this doesn't look like the same Spider-Man set up I'm used to. I know a few classic Spider-Man characters are in the movie due to the cast list (Marisa Tomei as Aunt May for example) but still, the whole dynamic still seems different. Still, it's a refreshing different. Plus, I am perfectly fine with Tony Stark being in this film over someone like, I dunno, Flash Thompson. On that same note: Micheal Keaton as Vulture. When I found out he'd be in this role, I was a little skeptical, mostly because I just prefer my Vultures to look like the comic: a bald old guy with a sharp nose. Still, given Keaton's small appearance here, adding onto his past experience as both Batman and Birdman (which is somewhat ironic), it looks like he has the makings of turning in a good performance.
  12. Straight from Brazilian Comic Con alongside the new Guardians 2 trailer is the newest reboot to Universal's Mummy franchise: This isn't just a Mummy reboot by the way. This is also the first planned movie by Universal to create their own shared cinematic universe. That's right, mere weeks after I posted about the Skull Island trailer, we now have Universal throwing their hats into the shared film franchise game. They apparently have plans to tackle all of their classic movie monsters and already have actors lined up to play some of them: Frankenstein's Monster (played by Javier Bardem), Bride of Frankenstein, Count Dracula, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde (Jekyll, who is also in this film, played by Russel Crow), Wolf Man, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Invisible Man (played by Johnny Depp), and of course, The Mummy. First off: Tom Cruise is in this. That's a good sign. That doesn't automatically mean the movie will be good but it at least guarantees that Cruise will be good in it because he's pretty good in mostly everything he is. Also, we have Sophia Boutella as the titular Mummy, who previously played Gazelle in Kingsman. In that movie, she had blades for legs, and here, she's the titular ancient, four-eyed, sexy hellbringer of death... I have the weirdest boner right now. Ahem, anyway: I don't know much about The Mummy or any of the other dozens of Mummy films, so I can't comment that much further on the trailer, but I am really glad that Universal is giving the classic movie monsters a second life by giving them a shared movie universe. Nowadays, these types of monsters are mostly kiddie fodder and are treated more as jokes rather than serious horror icons. They still are icons in their own right of course, but you have to remember the last time that the Mummy had a movie in the 50s i.e. the same era it originally debuted was a comedy movie where it chased Abbot and Costello... yeeeeah... and let's not even delve in the cheesy 90s film with Brendan Fraser. All I'm saying is that giving them a second more dark and serious iteration isn't going to hurt.
  13. I wrote this a long time ago and never ended up posting it, found it on my computer and figured I'd share it with the world. Hi everyone, today I felt like starting a discussion on one of my favorite film franchises, that being the Alien franchise. One piece of information I'd like to make known is that I have not seen Prometheus however I am aware it is considered a quasi-prequel to the first film. WARNING:THIS THREAD WILL NOT BE SPOILER FREE AND AS SUCH I WILL NOT BE PUTTING SPOILER TAGS. So without further delay let's get started. In this first post I will be talking about the first film in the series which is: Alien (1979) Director: Ridley Scott Screenplay: Dan O'Bannon Let me start off by saying, if you haven’t seen this movie; 1, why are you on this topic 2, go and watch like right now. Stop reading what I have written, and go spend the 2 hours it takes to watch this movie. It is without a doubt the Science Fiction Horror film. I’m not sure where to start so let’s start with the basic plot of the movie. The movie, set in the year 2122 takes place almost entirely aboard the commercial towing vessel the USS Nostromo. During the crew’s return trip to Earth they are commanded by their employer to investigate a signal of unknown origin. Upon investigating the source of said signal one of the crew members is attacked by an unknown life form that attaches itself to his face, later this organism appears to die. During the crew’s last meal before entering hibernation for the flight home the crew member whom had previously been assaulted by the lifeform is killed by the parasite that has been gestating within him. Thus releasing the titular alien. One of the first things I’d like to discuss about this movie is the pacing, Alien in very much a slow burn film. It is roughly 40 minutes before even the facehugger appears and the full grown form of the Xenomorph is given I’d estimate less than 15 minutes of time on screen. This however works overwhelmingly in favor of the movie. Alien is all about atmosphere and it is genius at building its atmosphere. Not just in its design but also in the acting of each of the cast members. The characters are as follows, Dallas, Kane, Ripley, Parker, Brett, Lambert, and Ash. Speaking of the characters, let’s talk about them right now. First up is Ash, now Ash doesn’t have much development other than the fact that he seems to be acting in the company’s favor as opposed to the safety of the crew of the Nostromo, this is of course because he is actually an Android planted by the Weyland-Yutani corporation to ensure the Xenomorph’s capture and transit to a Weyland-Yutani research facility. Brett is an engineering technician and is the first crew member to encounter and be killed by the full grown Xenomorph. Brett is rather stupid and easily one of the least likeable of the crew. Moving onto Parker, the head machinist/engineer aboard the Nostromo, Parker is one of the first to react when the Xenomorph kills Kane, and is also what I’d call the most proactive of the crew second only to Ripley who I will talk about later. Lambert is the umm, actually I’m not sure what Lambert’s job is aboard the ship, she might be the communications officer of the helmsman someone feel free to correct me. Kane, as I have mentioned is the crewmember who serves as the host for the Xenomorph, Kane isn’t given much development but while he is still alive it seems that he gets along with the rest of the crew. Dallas is the captain of the Nostromo and it is obvious he cares very much about his crew seen by his willingness to be the first to try to trap the Xenomorph, in the novelization of the film its mentioned that he has feelings for Ripley, which is reasonable to believe if you watch the film. Now onto Ripley, Ripley will be getting her own block of text because she’s just that darn important. Ripley is the protagonist of the film, and the sole survivor of the incident. Ripley is listed as the warrant officer, of the Nostromo. Ripley is a normal person who is thrust into a situation that would push any person to the breaking point. Ripley is also notable for being one of the first female protagonists of a science-fiction film or a horror film. Ripley in general and specifically her portrayal by Sigourney Weaver. Ripley gets more development in the sequel Aliens. There’s plenty of filmmaking elements to talk about in regards to Alien, I’m just going to speak about my personal favorite. All of the piping and infrastructure of the ship which is exposed to you for the full hour or so before you see the Alien is nearly identical in color and texture to the Alien itself. Thus near the climax of the movie when the Alien is in the shuttle with Ripley the viewer often does not see the Alien until it moves, which personally scared the living hell out of me. I would also like to add that this film is made using practical effects. Which are beautiful and I will maintain that a well made practical will always look better than CGI. There’s plenty more to talk about but this is already almost a 1000 words and I really don’t want to write this until tomorrow. So thanks for reading!
  14. A while back, we found out that Zordon's trusty robot assistant Alpha 5 will be in the movie and will also be voiced by Bill Hader. Now, after getting confirmation of Alpha 5 will sound like, we have confirmation of what Alpha 5 will look like. This design is obviously a big contrast to how he looks in the original show, but that's to be expected. One thing to take way is that he still keeps the original color scheme of gold/grey/red. Personally, I believe Alpha 5 probably won't play a big part in the movie as he is only meant to be Zordon's assistant and nothing more, so the design is nothing really for me to take away from other than, well, it exists. I do however appreciate how it keeps in line with the new "futuristic/symbiotic" theme that seems to be taking hold of the whole PR aesthetic in the film.
  15. Hey there everyone, how's it going!? So then, if you all hadn't noticed, a new trailer for Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 surfaced on Youtube, and I just watched it! This film looks like it'll be insanely hilarious! It looks like Baby Groot and Drax will steal the show! See for yourselves! And this film comes out on my birthday! I'm so hyped! X_X
  16. I don't really watch this channel much, but this video came up in my feed and I thought he did a great job of explaining why so many people (myself included) love Star Wars. It's a great analysis of my favorite movie series, and since it's fairly popular on this site, I thought that some others might appreciate seeing this video. It's good for anyone that wants to understand the popularity of the series, too.
  17. Hello there, humans, Bill Cipher here! I was just looking around the web, and I found this hilarious video of an upcoming film! A Lego film! This certainly looks like it'll be fun! What do you all think?
  18. This movie, as I've come to learn, is not only another King Kong movie, but also the second in the now established in Legendary Entertainment's new monster movie shared cinematic universe which officially started in the 2014 "Godzilla" film. I never saw Godzilla '14 (probably will at some point now that I've seen this) but I've heard good things, as well as bad things. Either way, it made a ton of money and it's no surprise that Legendary would want their own CU. It's all the rage nowadays. As for this film in particular: well, it's got a lot of good, recognizable actors, good looking visuals, Kong looks impressive, the monsters look ferocious, and it's a bit of an alternate take on the property (if you recall, the original Kong story was set in the 30s while this is fast forwarded to the 70s, and I really doubt anybody's taking a trip back to New York and putting Kong on display and whatnot, though I could still be wrong). One big thing about this film concerning Kong himself, as I've also read, is that he takes a lot of inspiration from his original 30s incarnation while still attempting to retain modern elements and overall be timeless. He's described as a "lonely God, he was a morose figure, lumbering around this island". Clearly, there's a bit of seriousness that the movie is taking (I mean, how can you not, it's centered around an island full of freaky natives and giant monsters) but also a little bit of campiness (mostly from John C. Reilly's appearance), which works in the film's favor because that's also very reminiscent of the original 30s film. So then, thoughts?
