Shin Tokiwa, a 16 year old high school student, lives in a small city in Japan. He has one brother, who mysterious disappeared the day he was born. Both of his parents, looking for Shin to have a good education and a good life, sends him to Akarui Boarding School, on the outskirts of the city. This is his story.

"Shin!". A short boy was standing over another boy who is covered in blankets, shaking him frantically. "Shin wake up! It's 7:55! School is going to start in 5 minutes!". The boy who was under the covers moaned a little, and then shifted his position in his bed to a more comfortable one. The short boy groaned. He couldn't be late to school again, he had been late for the past 2 weeks straight. "Fine Shin", the boy said, "I'm leaving. You can get to class by yourself." With that, the boy walked out of the room, closing the door loudly behind him.

The noise of the door being slammed woke Shin up from his deep slumber. "Whoa..", he muttered. Rubbing the sleep out of his eyes, he takes a stretch and looks at the clock. 7:57. "Oh man!". Shin jumped out his bed, already full dressed for school with his white button up shirt, his blue tie, and his beige pants. Shin bended over to pick up his shoes in a panic. How the hell did I oversleep this time? Ryota must've left me, damn it! he thought. Sliding his shoes on frantically, Shin grabbed his backpack from under his desk and ran out of the room. The dorm was completely empty, everybody was already at school. "Crap crap crap crap crap!", Shin muttered to himself as he dashed down the dorm hallway. He kicked open the front door, and jumped off the porch, and continued his dash to his school room. Before he got a chance to enter the school building, the bell rang. "Crap...", Shin said, defeated. He walked into the building, head hanging down, because he knew the scolding he would get from his teacher.

Shin, finding his classroom to the left side of the school hallway, sighed as he looked at the door. "Oh well, she won't be too mad..", he muttered. Shin opened the door and walked in to find the whole class listening attentively to the teacher giving a lecture about Pre-Calculus. The class turned their attention on Shin as soon as he walked in, as did the teacher. "Late again, Mr. Tokiwa. What is your excuse this time?", she says coldly. Shin sighed and walked to his desk. "I...overslept", he said as he sat down in his normal seat, located in the direct middle of the classroom. "Ahh, of course. Must've been up too late doing homework, huh?", the teacher said sarcastically. A couple of girls in the back started to giggle. A muscle in Shin's jaw jumped. He didn't like his teachers sarcasm. But he didn't like his teacher at all anyways. "That actually was the case, Mrs. Aomori", Shin sneered.

Mrs. Aomori smirked and walked up to Shin's desk, placing one hand on the desk, and used one hand to set her glasses straight on her face. "Can I see this homework, Shin", she smiles. Shin sighed once again and took his backpack off of his back and opened it. He pulled out a red folder and handed Mrs. Aomori the contents. Mrs. Aomori took a quick second to scan the papers, and then slammed then back down on Shin's desk. She bended over, getting closer to Shin's face, and looked directly in his eyes. "Do you take me for a fool, Mr. Tokiwa?", she growled. "I really don't want to answer that question honestly, Mrs. Aomori, because you will get offended", Shin shot back. The whole class began to snicker, and Mrs. Aomori turned an angry shade of red. "Get out", she said quietly. Shin didn't waste any time following her directions. He grabbed his papers off of his desk and shoved them back into his folder, and then shoved his folder back in his backpack. He got up, walking to the door with a happy swagger to his step. Before he walked out, Shin said one more thing. "By the way, Mrs. Aomori. Colgate is only $5.99. I suggest you buy it." The whole class erupted in laughter, and Shin walked out, victorious.

Chapter 1

Shin went back to his dorm room and took a nap all day, skipping school.

Around 4:00 p.m, he was awaken by his cellphone violently vibrating on the stand next to his bed. Shin took a stretch and grabbed his phone, looking at who was calling. It was his father. Shin quickly flipped his phone open to answer.

"Uh...hey Dad!", Shin said nervously. "Son, please don't hey me. Why did you blatantly disrespect your teacher in front of class, and then decide to ditch school?! Shin, we put you Akarui to get a good education, not for you to goof off!", his dad yelled. A sudden headache struck Shin. Still holding the phone to his ear, Shin got up from bed and started to walk towards the bathroom. "Are you there?". "Yeah yeah Dad. I've just been feeling a little odd lately. Sorry." Shin's headache began to get more and more unbearable. He stumbled into the bathroom in incredible pain. "Feeling weird? Maybe you need to go to the doctor. I can pay for your visit", Shin's dad says worriedly. "No no Dad. It's not anything medical, I don't think. It's just...GAH!-". Shin dropped the phone on the marble floor and he gripped his head. The pain was astounding, he couldn't bear it.

Shin's knee buckled, and he held onto the bathroom sink for support. He weakly took his right hand and turns on the cold water. Cold water could help him. Shin looked into the mirror and gasped. Looking back at him was a demonic version of himself. The mirror Shin basically looked the same, except for a few things. He had white skin, black spiky hair (an alternate color of Shin's hair, which is brown), black teeth, and black eyes with silver pupils. "Shin? Shin!", his dad yells. Shin could barely hear his dad's voice from his cellphone which was still on the floor. He was too engulfed in the mirror. Mirror Shin then smirks, and the mirror cracked in several areas before exploding in Shin's face. And then Shin was falling. Falling into oblivion. Nothing but black, nothing but black-

"Shin, wake up!". Shin's eyes flickered open. He was on the bathroom floor, laying face first on the cold marble. His cellphone was right next to his ear, and Ryota was standing in the bathroom door, looking concerned. "Shin, thank goodness you woke up!", Ryota said as he walked over to Shin and helped him to his feet. Shin grabbed his cellphone and looked through it. There were no records of his dad even calling. "What happened Shin? Why were you on the floor with your cellphone to your ear?". Shin frowned. "I-I don't know. I just had the weirdest dream ever, I must've been sleep walking." Ryota's face showed his confusion. "Umm..okay man. Anyways, it's dinner time. Better hurry to the cafeteria, it's Kare Raisu day today. Mhmmmm!". With that, Ryota booked out of the bathroom and out of the dorm room.

Shin, who's stomach was growling, decided to go to the cafeteria as well. It was dark outside, and cold. Shin wanted to get the cafeteria fast and get out fast. When he reached the cafeteria building, he was just about to open the door when he hears a loud roar. He turned around to see a giant monster on the far end of the campus. The monster was absolutely gigantic. It had some sort of a mask on, and a black, sleek body with no arms or legs.

Two girls had approached the cafeteria door, and were waiting impatiently for Shin to open it. "Are you going to take all day to open the door, dimwit?", one of the girls said. Shin looked at them like they were crazy. "Do you not see that giant monster right there?!!". He pointed his finger frantically. The girls looked, and pretended like they were shocked. "Hahahaha. No. Move out the way, freak.", the other girl said as she shoved Shin out of the way of the cafeteria door. Shin gave them both another look as they both walked into the cafeteria, laughing haughtily. How could they not see that thing?

To make sure he wasn't crazy, Shin rubbed his eyes. After he rubbed them, he is even more surprised. The monster was gone. "Maybe I am crazy", Shin muttered to himself. "You aren't the only person who sees those things." Shin turned around, looking for the person who spoke to him. A boy, about age 14, with long hair and huge glasses stepped out from the shadows and gives Shin an ominous look, as if he knew all of the things that had happened to Shin. "What?", Shin muttered. He had never seen this kid in his 3 years he had been at this school. Was he a freshman?

The kid gave Shin one more look, the moonlight gleaming off of his glasses, and then he stepped back into the shadows. "That was weird", Shin mutters to himself as he opened the door to the cafeteria and walked in.

Chapter 2

After the odd events from the previous night, Shin became more cautious of his surroundings throughout the week. He tried his best to make sure none of those "things" pop up on him, and he also kept his eye out for that weird kid with the glasses. He looked for him the next day in every single period he had, but the kid was no where to be found.

I wonder where that kid went, Shin thought to himself as he walked out of 7th period. "Well, today I can hang out by myself today since Ryota is going to that weirdo convention", he muttered to himself. Ryota always had a passion for odd things. Today he was going to an Udon Noodle convention. Exactly why? Shin didn't even know.

Covering his eyes from the strong afternoon sun, Shin walked to his dorm room with a sort of happy swagger to his step. He could finally have a night to himself, and he was excited about it. However, his excitement turns into grief when he opens his door and saw the boy with the glasses sitting on his couch watching television.

"Hey, close that door! It's chilly!", the boy yelled at Shin, not taking his eyes off of the T.V. for a moment. A muscle in Shin's jaw jumped. "Who the hell are you, and how the hell did you get in here?". The boy didn't answer Shin's first question, but pointed a finger towards the dorm window, answering his second question. The window was completely busted, not a shard of glass was attached to it.

Now pissed off, Shin rushed the boy and snatches him off the coach, and held him by the scruff of his collar. "So you broke into my room to watch T.V..", Shin snarled as he looked the boy dead in the eyes with a hate filled glare. The boy smacked Shin's hand, forcing Shin to drop him. The boy fell to the ground, and quickly got back up, brushing his clothes off. "If you really want to know why I am here, I am on assignment to keep watch on you." Shin raised an eyebrow. "Keep watch on me? Who in the hell told you to keep watch on me?".

The boy dug his hands into his pants pockets and took out some sort of crossed shaped badge. "I'm a Quincy, and I work for the Soul Society." Shin snorted with laughter. "What the hell is that thing?", he said, pointing at the badge the boy had in his hand. "And who the hell are the Soul Society?".

The boy shoved the badge back into his pockets and pushed his bangs out of his face. "Since I see you are low in intelligence, I will not explain all that right now. I was sent here to monitor you because of your odd reiatsu level. It is attracting Hollows." Shin raised his eyebrow again. "Can you fill me in on what a Hollow is?". The boy sighed and pushed his drooping glasses back up on his face. "A Hollow is what you saw last night. And if you stay around here, more will come and try to devour you." Shin didn't like the sound of that.

The boy turned away from Shin and walked towards the window. "I've already told you too much, it's time for me to go." And with that, he jumped out the 3rd story window. "Wait!", Shin yelled as he ran to the window. Surely the kid must've fallen from such a height. Shin peered down over the window pane, and didn't see a broken body on the ground below. "How the hell did that kid do that?", Shin muttered to himself as he turned away from the window and sat down on the couch.

He grabbed the remote and turned on the volume of the TV. Some sort of movie was on. "This kid better not have been watching T.V. all day, our electricity will get cut off", Shin said to himself. A woman on the T.V. walked on to the scene, which was some sort of bedroom. "A romantic comedy? Better not be", Tao muttered. The woman then sat down on the bed and laid down on her back. She moved her hands closer and closer to the middle of her pants...........

The T.V. is turned off by Shin before anything else happens. "That little pervert!", he growled.

Chapter 3

That same night, Shin had a dream. More like a nightmare. He was running in a dark abyss with some weird robe on, carrying a sword in both of his hands. Giant "Hollows" chased him through the abyss, and shot red beams of energy at them. Shin got hit by one of the beams and fell over, and then a mask started to grow on his face. After that, he woke up.

"Damn..", he muttered as he slowly opens his eyes. His face was covered in sweat, and he had an extreme headache. How come he kept on having these weird dreams? Something just wasn't right. This all started to happen after his dad called him. But wait..my phone doesn't even have records of him calling. This makes no sense at all. He figured the best thing to do was to call him now, even though it was 3 A.M. in the morning.

Shin turned the light on next to his bed, and realized that Ryota wasn't home. "That convention should have ended hours ago!", Shin said as he got of bed. He went to his closet and threw on a leather jacket, and then walked out of the dormitory into the main school grounds. "Ryota!", Shin yelled out. No response. Shin wanted to go looking for him in town, but there was no way he could get there. The convention center was 50 miles away, and Shin had no car.

"Ahhh. He'll get home soon enough. It's technically the weekend anyways." And then a loud yell pierced the silent night. A loud, unhuman yell. It had to be an Hollow. Could the Hollow be the reason Ryota wasn't home? Shin had to find out. Turning around towards the woods at the back end of the school, Shin could see a tall creature with a bright, white face and a pointy nose, and blue arrows and a green beam being shot at it. Shin ran to where all of the commotion was.

By the time he had gotten there, one of the two people that were fighting the Hollow was injured. The boy, the Quincy, propped him up against the tree and continued to fight. Shin squinted to get a better look at the boy. It was Ryota, bleeding from his face, in some sort of black robe holding a sword. Shin ran to him, screaming his name. "Ryota!". When Shin reached him, Ryota looked up at him and grinned weakly. "I guess I have a lot of explaining to do..". He then heaved up a chunk of blood. "What the hell is going on?!", Shin yelled frantically as he tried to help his friend.

"You...you aren't what you think you are Shin", Ryota said grimly. Shin was tempted to punch Ryota in the face for speaking in riddles. "Damn it Ryota!", he yelled, pounding the ground. Ryota held his left hand out to Shin. "Take my hand." Reluctantly, Shin grabbed hold of Ryota's hand right. Ryota then started to glow intensely, and Shin started to feel power he flow through him. Power he had never felt before. By the time Ryota stopped glowing, Shin felt that he could crush the Earth with his fist.

"What did you do?", said Shin, looking down at his friend, who started to have a morbid look to him. Ryota replied, "I awoken your powers Shin. Now defeat the Hollow. Don't lose control." "Lose control? Lose control of what?!". Shin didn't get his answer, because Ryota's eyes closed shut.

"You bastard!", Shin said, getting up from his dead friends side with tears falling down his cheeks. "You bastard!". This was all too much. Not only did Shin not know what the hell was going on, now his best friend just died.

The Quincy delayed his battle with the Hollow and took the time to check on Shin. He jumped from the tree branch he was perched on, and looked at Shin grimly. "He was a brave-". That's all he could say before Shin clocked him in the side of the head with his fist. The Quincy fell down to the ground hard, the side of his glasses broken. "Shut the hell up!", Shin yelled as he looked at the Hollow. This thing was causing too much trouble. It had to be stopped. Do you truly want to stop this Hollow? , a deep voice said in Shin's head. "Yes! Yes!", Shin yelled. Suddenly, a long sword appeared in Shin's hand. Shin looked at it, surprised. "How the hell did I get this?", he said, holding the sword in front of him to marvel at it.

The Quincy got up from the ground. "It's your Zanpakuto. Your personal sword, your companion", he said as he dusted himself off. "My companion, huh..". Shin gripped his Zanpakuto with two hands and ran towards the Hollow.

The Hollow, seeing Shin moving towards him, fired a beam of red energy at him. Shin moved to the side, dodging it, but still charging at the Hollow. He jumped into the air (surprisingly high), and sliced the Hollow across its chest. Falling slowly back to the ground, Shin saw the black blood erupt from Hollow as it disappeared into the darkness. We are comrades Shin. We will not be separated. I am your sword, and you are my master.
