baylaust 2,531 Posted December 12, 2010 So, at least for me, Spike's 2010 Video Game Awards just ended, and what do I think? I think it was definitely a step in the right direction. However, there are still a few problems I have with it, that I have decided to write down in a needlessly long forum post that you must now sit down and read. HAH! Pros Unlike the other VGAs, this show definitely seemed to be focused more on the games this time. You would think that this would be a no-brainer since, well, it's the f**king VGAs! However, most of the time, it has focused on getting the biggest stars they possibly could that have nothing to do with video games to present awards that are presented by their sponsors, like the infamous "Best Independant Game Fueled By Mountain Dew". So it's nice to see them making the show more about the video games. They used an interesting technology throughout the show that created new environments around the stage while the show was going on, like environments from God of War, Halo, Black Ops, etc. This was definitely an interesting idea, and for the most part, it complimented the show pretty well. I do feel sorry for the live audience, though, as the effects could only be seen by viewers at home. Celebrities do still appear through the show to present the awards. However, a good portion of them actually DO have something to do with gaming. Neil Patrick Harris (voice of the 'Amazing' SpiderMan in Shattered Dimensions) hosted the show, with a rather funny opening, and for the most part, he did a decent job hosting it. Most of the other celebrity names did have a gaming history, and the ones that didn't were tolerable. Except for Rachel Bilson, but I'll get back to that. The Best Character catagory was definitely my favourite, with the characters in their in-game engines actually talking about their nominations with their original voice actors. I was pretty surprised to see Ezio Auditore begin talking to the audiance about his nomination, and Kratos was f**king amazing to watch. There were live music acts performing themes and songs from games like Red Dead Redemption and Halo Reach, and they were very good. Cons Spike, I appreciate you putting the VGAs live each year on your channel, and Spike TV itself is good.... but for the love of God, STOP PROMOTING YOUR OWN SHOWS IN THE VGAS! As I said earlier, there were celebrities making a lot of appearences in the VGAs, and most of them did have something to do with gaming. And then we had Rachel Bilson. I have no problem with her as an actress, but she had no right to be there. She has nothing to do with gaming, she was mispronounsing words, she was trying to be funny but wasn't.... overall, it was just embarassing, and I wish she was cut from the show. Once again, Nintendo and PC games got the shaft to PS3 and 360 games. As much as I love the PS3 and 360, they're not the only pieces of gaming media out there. Handhelds, the Wii, and PC games were barely, if AT ALL mentioned, and that is something they NEED to fix. And finally, some of the awards were a bit questionable. And by some, I mean the best male VA award going to Neil Patrick Harris for Amazing SpiderMan. Not to say he did a bad job, but he was going up against characters from Red Dead Redemption, Black Ops, Halo Reach, etc., and I find the fact that he got picked for an above-average beat-em up game is a little odd. Plus, it didn't help that he's the one hosting the show. Overall So to sum it all up, the show had some neat effects, amazing previews and trailers, mostle good choices for celebrity names, and was overall a step in the right direction. The show DOES still have quite a few flaws, and it needs to quit focusing soley on PS3 and 360. Also, letting the gamers vote for their favourite game is a bad idea, since that will usually make the VGAs a popularity contest. While that problem was definitely not as bad this year, that is something they could work on. So what was your opinion on the VGAs? Discuss.
