Ok, I understand why Roxas looks like Ventus despite being Sora's Nobody, but why do Sora and Ventus have such a strong resemblance? They look too similar to be coincidental.

Well, yeah they are similiar. In fact, a lot pf things about Ventus much strongly resembles Sora. Like when Aqua woke Ven up in the Land of Departure, as well as Ven's personality, Ven and Vanitas face off in their forged heart like with Sora and Roxas, and as well as some parts of his clothes.

It is because when Sora was born, MX took Ven to Destiny Islands. It was just after the creation of Vanitas, and Ven's heart was damaged because of it. His heart met the newborn Sora's heart and Sora's heart formed a bond with Ven's restoring the missing part of Ven's heart. So they're are connected by their hearts. That could have altered Sora's personality and looks to be similar to Ven's, since Sora was just a baby. And it could be entirely possible that, since Sora had Ven's heart at the end of BBS, that Sora could have started to look like Vanitas.

 

However, this is all merely speculation.

Ven's heart being connected to Sora's didn't affect Sora's personality that way. When Sora was born, he still had his personality of being kind to other people that he meets. BBS was just to reference some parts of Sora, Riku, and Kairi for the most part.

You don't know that for sure. For all we know, Sora's personaility could be because of Ven, or it couldn't. There is no way to prove either one. As I said, it was merely speculation. Nobody knows how Sora would have been if his heart never connected to Ven's. He could have had an entirely different look and personality, or he could have been exactly the same. We just don't know, nor can we prove it.

My opinion is that Nomura didn't think it through thoroughly enough. He made Roxas to look like Sora since he's his nobody, then thought 'I know, I can make Roxas have a heart all along by making his real self (ish) a person from the past!' trouble is, he's got no relation to Sora. So i think its just not thought out enough:

Aqua covers it by saying casually 'he's a spitting image of Ven', as if to say he looks similar, nothing paranormal about it

....I never could understand why everyone thought Sora and Roxas/Ven looked alike, I honostly don't see it, they look completly different to me, besides the blue eyes and scrawny bodies. All that runnin' around with a heavy key ain't enough of a workout? e.e
