baylaust Reviews: Marvel vs Capcom 3 (PS3)

Posted

[align=center]I don't care where you live or how old you are, if you haven't played Marvel vs Capcom, you simply don't know what fighting games truly are. Marvel vs Capcom 2 is widely regarded as not only one of the best crossover fighting games, but one of the best fighting games PERIOD. After a 10 year break, Capcom has finally given us what we have been demanding for a decade. Was it worth the wait? I've played it extensively, and here is my review.

Keep in mind that I'm reviewing MY copy of the game, and the PS3 version. Your copy may not have the same issues that mine did.

Story

Yes. Believe it or not, there IS a story to this game. Good ol' Dr. Doom and Albert Wesker have assembled the most dangerous villains from each of their respective universes in an attempt to conquer both of them. Unfortunately, there are two major problems with this plan:

1. All of the heroes gather together to stop these bad guys.

2. They unwittingly awaken a force more powerful than anything they could imagine (I won't spoil anything, but I'll give you a hint: he's bigger than the planet and wears purple).

One of Capcom's promises for this title was that it would have an epic story, at least for a fighting game. This is a promise that was sadly broken, as the only traces of story are in the opening video and the game's manual. The only in-game story you will find is in the last match of arcade mode (in one of the must difficult fighting game bosses I've ever played against), which kinda sucks. It IS a fighting game though, so I guess I can't hold a weak story against it.

Gameplay

Of course, what makes a game is NOT its story, but it's gameplay. And Marvel vs Capcom 3's gameplay is both its strongest and weakest aspect of the game. While the control scheme has been changed(now playing like Tatsunoku vs Capcom), the overall fighting itself remains exactly like you remember it. You fight in teams of 3 composed of Marvel and Capcom characters, and unleash lightning quick combos in the hopes of knocking them into the air, where you can do some serious damage. You can swap out characters at any time, and can even swap them mid-air combo to link several attacks together. Each team has a Hyper Combo Bar that when filled up can allow characters to unleash a Hyper Combo, attacks unique to each character that do serious damage.

Fighting is fast-paced and unrelenting, and is easily the best part of the game. If you like games like Soul Calibur where you can try and catch a break by backing off every now and then, give that up when playing MvsC3. You can only play in 3vs3 teams, with no option to go 1on1. A minor gripe, but it's nothing serious.

MvsC3 comes with an online mode as well, where you can face off against characters around the world, and in my case, get slaughtered by them. I've been hearing mixed things about the online, but luckily, it's been working well for me. Maybe it's because I'm using the PS3, I don't know.

Sadly, asides from fighting A.I teams and going online, there is nothing else to the game. Extra modes like Survival and Time Attack, modes that are standard fare for ANY fighting game, are notably absent, and while there are extras, they're nothing special. Online doesn't even have a Spectator mode, which sucks because MvsC3 may be the only game in the world that you ENJOY watching other people play. I'm hoping there will be a DLC for Spectator mode in the future, and I BETTER not have to pay for it.

Finally, the roster is a mixed bag. Several fan favourites like Deadpool (awesome), Wesker (awesome), and Dante (awesome), as well as returning favourites like SpiderMan (awesome) have made it in. On the other hand, several characters like Mega-Man and Venom have been ditched in favour of characters like M.O.D.O.K (?), She-Hulk (...) and Sentinel (the ultimate spam character). As long as Deadpool, Dante, and Spiderman are in it, I'm good, but whether the roster is worth the wait or not can be debated.

Presentation

The 2D sprites of the old MvsC games have beem abandoned in favour of a 3D style. And let me tell you that the game looks incredible. The art style is very comic booky and fits the game well, and the uses of the 3D models are incredible, especially for some of the Level 3 Hyper Combos. I know some people will prefer the 2D look, but for me, I'mm stick with this.

The game is filled with several catchy tunes, including a theme for each character. The game is hardly a musical masterpiece, but you'll be humming the soundtrack after a couple hours of playing, that's a promise.

The game runs very well for me. It has a solid framerate that almost never faulters, and I've encountered little to no lag when playing online.

Verdict

So, I give Marvel vs Capcom 3 for the Playstation 3 a:

7.5/10

I would love to give this game the high score that I thought it would get. The fighting is amazing and the art style and graphics are breathtaking. However, that's all there is, with Capcom ignoring the modes and features that you expect to see in any fighting game, and a story that did not live up to the hype that Capcom was promising. If you want to jump in and fight, and you're a fan of the old MvsC games, pick it up RIGHT NOW. If you're expecting ANYTHING else, though, prepare to be disappointed.

So, do you own Marvel vs Capcom 3 for the X-Box 360 or Playstation 3? Was I too harsh or too leniant? Was there any points that I missed?

If you want to face me online, let me know. My PSN is baylaust.

i agree with pretty much everything you said.

although when you were talking about the lack of gameplay modes you left out the free 'shadow mode' DLC that came out a couple of days ago.

but i still want spectator mode, lobbies couldn't get more boring.

i think it was a very good review

i would give it little higher of score but i agree with most of your points
