hey, some of you might remember my old review thread, but it failed because i kept promising reviews i never delivered.

and now i'm back, with lots more games to review, and an improved reviewing system. i don't review using a number score anymore, i use a +/- system instead (which i find to be much more accurate).

i'll be doing reviews and first looks. first looks is where i do a mini review of demos and/or the first part of a game.

the reason I review is mainly just to give my thoughts about the game and help people who are on the fence decide. however, i also do it to give completely unbiased reviews, unlike people like IGN who give rubbish scores to great games and really high scores to completely average games (eg. CoD)

PLAYSTATION MOVE HEROES Review

I heard about this game a few months ago, when it was titled ''heroes on the move'' (a much better title in my opinion), and was really excited that there would be a game with 6 of my favourite characters in. i completely forgot about it until the demo came out a few days ago, and after playing that i had to buy the game, because i found it very fun.

After playing the demo, i realised that this wasn't going to be a regular game like i thought, and instead is a minigame collection. thats not a bad thing though, as i enjoy minigame collections very much, but it would have been nice to have a full game instead.

The story is your standard crossover game story line, all 6 characters got pulled from their universes to compete in a big ''hero games'' competition. but you won't need to get bored by the story at all, because it is only told by a few short cutscenes that are very short and spread out over the course of the game.

On the topic of the cutscenes, they look amazing, all the characters look great, including sly cooper, who hasn't had a new game on the PS3 yet. they managed to make sly and bentley less cel-shaded to fit in with the environments, but they look better than ever. the ingame graphics are also good, where there is alot happening on the screen but never any drop in framerate. some characters' special attacks can use very nice blur and slo-mo effects that show you how nice the game looks.

The sound design is also great, with good music, sound effects pulled from the original games, and the voice actors for the main characters are as amazing as ever. that goes for the announcer too, who i think is played by the same voice actor as captain quark from ratchet and clank.

the minigames are actually really fun. most have different weapon types that shape how you play. there are discs, balls, standard weapons, whips and guns. there is plenty of variety in the games and settings, and there are LOTS of missions to play, i'd say at least 50, probably quite a bit more.

but you'd think for this minigame compilation there would be some solid multiplayer right? WRONG. the only multiplayer avaliable is 2 player co-op, and even that is just like super mario galaxy (meaning all you have is a crosshair, and you can shoot things to get extra points. the extra points of which get you no trohpies, doesn't affect the type of medal you get, and give you no advantage within the minigames). i would have expected proper versus multiplayer, or at least an option to take games in turns to compete for the highest score, but there is neither.

It's just a shame thinking of what could have been... it could have been either a proper game with epic boss fights and great co-op gameplay, or a fun party game which you could play against your friends. it is neither of those, not that the game isn't good how it is.

So overall, if your looking for a fun single player move experience, you will be very happy with this game. if your looking for a multiplayer party game, buy a wii.

+ great sound design

+ good music

+ epic cutscenes

+ nice graphics

+ fun minigames

+ tonnes of replayability

- rubbish multiplayer

- bare minimum story

- no crash bandicoot

- way too easy

- core story could have been developed with different gameplay

to make the game so much better

Nice review Obsidian. I had considered getting this game when it came out, but I wanted a solid story mode.

The mini-games look fun and all, but an actual story with all three of those characters would've been awesome.

and ratchet and clank future 3... AND A NEW FRIGGIN CRASH BANDICOOT GAME. right now i really want more from the classic franchises.

I think Activision still owns Crash which they killed so we properly won't see a new game for awhile i kinda wish Naughty Dog or Ready at Dawn make the next game and it a downloadable game or for the psp 2.If you didn't know there making a new spyro game called Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure.I don't think it looks very good

urgh, i hate activision so much, they're my least favourite game publishers in existance.

but surely SCE could team up with travellers tales for a new game. a new crash game would be so epic

no. just no. unless Crash goes back to the epicness of Crash Bandicoot 2 and 3 (and Crash Bash), that would make me sick. Whoever owns Crash now turned it into some type of vomit filled disgusting-ness, as is what happened to Spyro.

But if they went back to "get the crystals and be awesome in a time trial doing it", then I'd be all for it.

Oh yeah, cool review :D

urgh, spyro, i used to love you so much...

but yeah, crash 2 was awesome. that with PS3 graphics, trophy support, would be epic.

BIT.TRIP BEAT PC - Review

I've heard about these games for quite a while, and due to a price drop on steam today i decided to get both Beat and Runner. considering beat is the first in the series, i started with Beat. and i'm really impressed. but let me warn you, you need a good sense of rhythm for this game. if you can't play guitar hero on begginner, don't even attempt to play this.

So the way this game works is that you're a paddle on the side of the screen (similar to pong), but instead of volleying a ball back and forth you try to stop 'beats' from flying past you. for every beat you hit, it will add one beat of music. there is also a nether realm if you repeatedly fail to block beats, where it takes away the music and the backgrounds and gives you one final chance to get back into the action. if you fail too many times here, it will be game over and you will have to start the entire level again.

While it gives you quite a few chances to stop yourself dying, the difficulty level is quite high (believe me, it's alot easier than bit trip runner). there will be ALOT going on in the game window, but as you play you will be able to tell what you need to hit from what you've already hit no problem. level 1 is quite easy, yet still being very fun, it will go in set patterns. level 2 is alot harder, the patterns will be a bit more random and you will need good eyes to say out of the nether. level 3 is ridiculous, with stuff flying at you from all over the place, good luck completing it.

i might as well bring up the boss battles, which come at the end of every 10 or 15 minute level. the boss battle are both creative and fun. at the end you'll be thinking ''how the F@#! did i do that???''. even the first boss fight includes you juggling 4 beats together, which is hectic but awesome. these boss fights are still subject to the awesome music, and you will defeat them by feeling the rhythm

So the most important bit, the music. the music is epic sauce. you will hear it in your head every time you think about the game. it is interactive with the beats that you hit, and changes through the whole level. so in the game there are 3 tracks which are very long but never seem repetitive. the music is fast-paced and the best 8-bit style music i've ever heard.

The graphics as well are incredible. the whole way through the game is bright and colorful, the animated backgrounds are very nice to look at, and the game runs at a very reasonable framerate for how much is packed onto the screen at any one time. the only problem is that while you're playing, you will be so engrossed that you will forget to blink, therefore your eyes will hurt at the end of the level and you'll need to take a break

i was going to talk about the controls, but there really aren't any. you move the mouse up and down to move your paddle. thats it. i like this, because it makes the mous less of a control stick and more of an extension of your thoughts. you can adjust mouse sensitivity in the game, so you should have no complaints about it.

this game has Leaderboards, which it didn't have on the wii, but the wii version had up to 4 player co-op, this does NOT. it's impossible to get 4 players on one keyboard, but they can get 2 on, or they could use the controller support they have to get 4 players on that way. at least the single player experience is worth the buy.

so in the end, Bit Trip Beat is a very fun rhythm game, with nice graphics, fun boss battles, awesome music, and addictive gameplay that will leave you playing it over and over again.

+ fun gameplay

+ good, responsive controls

+ best music EVAR

+ very nice graphics

+ online leaderboards

+ fun boss battles

+ way too hard, but in a good way.

+ it's so cheap. personally i'd pay
