hey, some of you might remember my old review thread, but it failed because i kept promising reviews i never delivered.
and now i'm back, with lots more games to review, and an improved reviewing system. i don't review using a number score anymore, i use a +/- system instead (which i find to be much more accurate).
i'll be doing reviews and first looks. first looks is where i do a mini review of demos and/or the first part of a game.
the reason I review is mainly just to give my thoughts about the game and help people who are on the fence decide. however, i also do it to give completely unbiased reviews, unlike people like IGN who give rubbish scores to great games and really high scores to completely average games (eg. CoD)
I heard about this game a few months ago, when it was titled ''heroes on the move'' (a much better title in my opinion), and was really excited that there would be a game with 6 of my favourite characters in. i completely forgot about it until the demo came out a few days ago, and after playing that i had to buy the game, because i found it very fun.
After playing the demo, i realised that this wasn't going to be a regular game like i thought, and instead is a minigame collection. thats not a bad thing though, as i enjoy minigame collections very much, but it would have been nice to have a full game instead.
The story is your standard crossover game story line, all 6 characters got pulled from their universes to compete in a big ''hero games'' competition. but you won't need to get bored by the story at all, because it is only told by a few short cutscenes that are very short and spread out over the course of the game.
On the topic of the cutscenes, they look amazing, all the characters look great, including sly cooper, who hasn't had a new game on the PS3 yet. they managed to make sly and bentley less cel-shaded to fit in with the environments, but they look better than ever. the ingame graphics are also good, where there is alot happening on the screen but never any drop in framerate. some characters' special attacks can use very nice blur and slo-mo effects that show you how nice the game looks.
The sound design is also great, with good music, sound effects pulled from the original games, and the voice actors for the main characters are as amazing as ever. that goes for the announcer too, who i think is played by the same voice actor as captain quark from ratchet and clank.
the minigames are actually really fun. most have different weapon types that shape how you play. there are discs, balls, standard weapons, whips and guns. there is plenty of variety in the games and settings, and there are LOTS of missions to play, i'd say at least 50, probably quite a bit more.
but you'd think for this minigame compilation there would be some solid multiplayer right? WRONG. the only multiplayer avaliable is 2 player co-op, and even that is just like super mario galaxy (meaning all you have is a crosshair, and you can shoot things to get extra points. the extra points of which get you no trohpies, doesn't affect the type of medal you get, and give you no advantage within the minigames). i would have expected proper versus multiplayer, or at least an option to take games in turns to compete for the highest score, but there is neither.
It's just a shame thinking of what could have been... it could have been either a proper game with epic boss fights and great co-op gameplay, or a fun party game which you could play against your friends. it is neither of those, not that the game isn't good how it is.
So overall, if your looking for a fun single player move experience, you will be very happy with this game. if your looking for a multiplayer party game, buy a wii.
+ great sound design
+ good music
+ epic cutscenes
+ nice graphics
+ fun minigames
+ tonnes of replayability
- rubbish multiplayer
- bare minimum story
- no crash bandicoot
- way too easy
- core story could have been developed with different gameplay
