Storytelling in Games: Part 1 - The Past and Present

Posted

On ign they have article where they talk about story's in videogames from major companies. http://pc.ign.com/articles/115/1159020p2.html#disqus_thread

It's an intersing read.I was very surprised about what Team ico had to say about storytelling in games,I also liked hering from BioWare and Ken Levine on this topic.

What do you think about story telling in video gaming?

Team ICO - Fumito Ueda, Director and Lead Designer:

To tell the truth, I think a video game is not a suitable medium for storytelling, especially when trying to articulate a complicated story. The gaming aspect of a video game can become a problem because the better the "one-way" storytelling is within a video game, the more chances of the gaming aspect becoming impedance that holds back the story progression.

2K Marin - Ken Levine, Creative Director:

I've got a bit of a biased viewpoint here. I think of the medium's maturity as maturing, as it relates to doing things that the gaming media does well exclusively. I'm not as interested in doing something as well as some movie or TV show does, because then why aren't we just watching a movie or TV show? So, yes, we are much better now than we were ten years ago in telling stories OUTSIDE of cut scenes.
