With Resistance 3 -- the eagerly-anticipated PlayStation 3-exclusive first-person shooter -- right around the corner, questions are already starting to crop up concerning the future of the franchise. An interview was posted over at Gaming Union with Marcus Smith, Resistance 3's creative director, in which he hints that while the Resistance series still has a future, Insomniac Games might not be a part of it.
When asked if Resistance was considered the "flagship franchise" of Insomniac, Smith reminded the interviewer that Insomniac has had great success with other series in the past, only to eventually pass them along to other studios. "I loved the Spyro the Dragon series when [insomniac] did that," he told Gaming Union. But later, he confessed that "it was healthy for [insomniac] to move on" from Spyro and that "that's what we're seeing here" with Resistance. "We've done Resistance 3 and we're really into it and proud of it, but we're not currently slated to do a Resistance 4."

After being further prodded about outright handing the Resistance series over to another developer, Marcus Smith says that he "can definitely see that." Remembering, of course, that a Resistance game was already developed by another studio (Resistance: Retribution on PSP was done by Sony Bend) and keeping in mind that Vita's Resistance offering (Burning Skies) is being done by Nihilistic, this isn't exactly surprising.
But is Insomniac really finished with Resistance? That remains to be seen. The studio is busy working on Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One and its first multiplatform game, Overstrike, and may simply be pushing a possible Resistance 4 off into the future, when development resources are freed up. Still, though, this interview does indicate a real possibility that, after Resistance 3, Resistance and Insomniac may part ways.
