Hey :) So I'm trying to learn Japanese here. I know how to read most of it, and hear most of it, but I fail dismally at writing...

What should people work on first?? xD

well for japanese i think read it/comprehend.

Well I study mandarin Chinese, and writing the words is a difficult aspect. If you can read and therefore recognize most words, writing them should flow from there. I would perhaps say think of a sentence in your head or say it out loud, and then try and write it. Take as many attempts as you need until you can say for sure you know how to write a word. Repetition was the key for me.

I voted before I read the post :P for a lot of languages i think speaking it is the easiest way to get it, cuz then you can focus on learning the script, thus learn how to read, thus learn how to write.

I guess it depends on why you wanna learn the language as well.

It's interesting to see what everyone thinks :)

I spent a lot of time learning the simple characters, so reading through Japanese manga is pretty easy now. It's just I don't understand everything in it.

haha, and if I tried to write it, I would fail xD hehe

Man, why do so many people want to learn japanese? Ha ha, i guess people are interested because of the anime and games they have. But anyway, I'm learning japanese as well, and since you're a beginner, I'd suggest trying to learn how to read all the Hiragana and Katakana letters first. That way when you are tryoing to read the words and learn some new words. You'll b e able to understand and read it. As for writing Japanese, like Sora's mum stated, it's a very difficult thing to learn. it takes up a lot of time and practice in order to master the ways of writing.
