Learning from Batman: New DC Comics Games Coming

Posted

The Warner Brothers Montreal video game studio is working on new games based on DC Comics, and studio head Martin Carrier doesn't want them to suck.

"We realize how good a job Rocksteady did with Arkham Asylum," Carrier told Canadian Business. "They changed people's perceptions and that's why we're not satisfied anymore with sub-par superhero games. Now, it's like they should be better than all the other games. So what's their secret recipe?"

Sadly, Carrier doesn't go into the recipe or tell us exactly what he's working on in the Canadian Business interview, but he does drop plenty of hints about his involvement with DC Comics.

"We're definitely working closely with DC on different titles, yet to be announced," Carrier said. "It's one of the reasons we talk to Geoff Johns and Jim Lee [the publisher's head honchos] on a regular basis. It's interesting for our geeky side to be in touch with those guys, especially now that they've relaunched all the 52 [comics]. It's a good time to be working with DC. There's so much energy going on there. So yeah, [we're in] the triple-A space and the casual online space."

A year ago, the Montreal studio was just four people, but Carrier says they're targeting 300 employees by 2015. He told Canadian Business that recruitment hasn't been hard because of the road developer Rocksteady blazed with its Batman games.

"One of the things that really helped us is the trend of where Warner was going on the game side. Batman: Arkham Asylum had come out and that had really changed peoples' perceptions of the superhero game. So when we'd talk to [potential employees] and say, 'Hey we're going to be working with DC,' they could see potential there."

When WB is ready to talk about what these games are, IGN will have the full report. Thanks to Cody Rostron for the tip
