Rude Awakening (1x1 with Peanut)

Posted

As some of you may know, Peanut and I are crazy about Roleplaying, and it's clear, since this is the second one on this site that belongs to us. And we aren't even done with the first one! Regardless, that won't stop us from starting this new roleplay, Rude Awakening!

Kinda dark and mysterious title, eh?

As stated in the title, this RP is one on one, no exceptions. Please refrain from posting in the RP. Instead, follow us on this new journey!

Peanut, my amazing friend, let's begin!

Riku caught that smirk and followed Lightning's gaze to the food. "I'm willing to share if you are," he said softly. The lights automatically dimmed when the movie was inserted into the player, so he couldn't see Lightning's face as well anymore. That could change if she shared his seat.

"Oh good," Lightning said smoothly, playing along. "I thought that was all for you." But there was something else she was wondering about: the seating. There were other beanbag chairs in the room, but it looked like Riku tried to sit on the side of his. The reason was obvious; he wanted to sit next to her. Right?

"No," Riku denied with a shake of his head and a faint smile. He motioned with his head to the available spot beside him, hoping Lightning would take the bait. The flirtatious behavior from before wasn't a fluke; he meant it. His actions were genuine, even if he did seem like he was only doing it in his favor. That was the farthest thing from the truth.

People don't sit in separate chairs on dates, Lightning reasoned. And she was the one who asked for this and was giving Riku a chance to redeem himself, so she couldn't say no to this either. She walked forward, stepping over a plate of cookies before she turned around and sat in the chair right beside Riku. She hadn't meant to sit this close to him, but the bean bag chair shifted and shoved both of them towards the middle and into each other.

Riku glanced over at Lightning when she sat beside him, and because they were so close, he decided to lift his arm and put it behind her to make both of them more comfortable. He didn't stare, however, not wanting to make her feel awkward. Did she trust him? Lightning seemed hesitant around Riku, especially after today's stunt. He hoped she didn't think he was playing her. He would never do that.

Lightning's body naturally relaxed underneath Riku's arm. When things were like this, it was hard to doubt that he cared for her. He put her underneath his arm so often, either protectively or just to make her feel loved. She was feeling the latter now, unlike earlier when she felt betrayed.

Riku found himself lost in thought during the movie. He didn't even pay attention, and when he did, his eyes were on Lightning. Like now, he gazed at her, watching as the light from the screen flickered across her face. In moments like this, he had the urge to hold her like a lover would, kiss her even. But...she believed he broke up with her in a moment of weakness, but he didn't. That was why things were so different between them, wasn't it? She thought he ended things.

It was only an hour into the long movie, and for now, things were quiet. It was just talking, not battle. Lightning was able to stay awake thus far because of the action scenes and exposition, but now she was getting a little tired. She wondered how Riku was faring. She turned her head and looked at him, surprised to meet his gaze. How long had he been looking at her?

Riku was tempted to look away as soon as Lightning met his gaze, but he didn't. His focus remained, and he kept his arm over her shoulders. He wanted to apologize for what he'd done to their relationship lately, if there even was one anymore. By how she responded to his flirting earlier, he imagined the potential was still there, but...what did she think?

Lightning scanned Riku's face, able to see it due to the screen providing enough light. He looked like there was something he wanted to say. "...Out with it," she encouraged, though she didn't say it angrily. Whatever was on his mind, she wanted to hear it.

"I just..." Riku tried, his eyes locked on Lightning's. There was so much he wanted to say. Where did he start? "...I'm sorry." He was sorry for pushing her away, for not being strong enough, for not keeping his promises, and for leading her on, even if none of it was his intention.

Light's natural inclination was to think that Riku was apologizing for taking advantage of her earlier to get the phone, but his tone told her otherwise. It was far too serious for talking about a phone. "...Sorry for what?" she asked, disregarding the movie. What had him so serious and sorry?

"Everything," Riku said, eyes softening as memories flooded his mind. Of when he left her after finding her passed out on the Islands, where Xehanort had the freedom to take her. Of not being able to save her from Cedric multiple times. Of shutting her out when he really needed her, and she really needed him. "I've been a lousy boyfr--uh...I've been really stupid." He looked away, lifting his free hand to rub the back of his head. He couldn't call himself her boyfriend anymore. Lightning made it clear that they weren't dating.

Lightning wasn't stupid; she caught that Riku stopped himself from calling himself her boyfriend. "...Why won't you call yourself my boyfriend?" she asked with caution. She thought that that day in the hallway, when she initially thought Riku broke up with her, that she made a mistake. She thought she presumed too much and that she was wrong in thinking he dumped her. But if he didn't think of himself as her boyfriend...

Riku lowered his hand, glaring at his lap at the question. "...Because it doesn't feel like you want me to be," he replied, looking over at the girl beside him. It felt like Lightning got mad at him over small things, like the flirting earlier. It may have been small to Riku, but was it something bigger for her? Did he really offend her by leaving it like that? And anything else that occurred between them to make her angry... Riku didn't think he could call himself hers.

"Since when do I not want you to be my boyfriend? How did I act like that?" Lightning asked with an arched brow. She was genuinely confused...and slightly horrified. How long was Riku thinking like this? He helped her around earlier that week when she couldn't walk. He taught her how to fly in Neverland. He whispered sweet-nothings in her ear earlier that day! And he did all that thinking they weren't a couple?

Riku's eyebrows furrowed. "I haven't kissed you or held your hand in weeks," he stated lowly. "And you haven't said anything. I thought that confirmed my suspicions." He told Lightning straight up that he hadn't broken up with her when she assumed he was, but...neither of them had done much to prove that assumption wrong otherwise.

This time, Lightning was the one who lowered her gaze to her lap. "You were already doing so much for me," she said softly. "How was I supposed to ask for more?" Yes, she noticed that he wasn't holding her hand or giving her kisses, but he still treated her with care. She forced herself to be okay with that and not ask for more. She didn't have a right to ask after all he did for her.

Riku looked away as well. "...I guess you shouldn't have to," he stated quietly. Lightning shouldn't have had to ask for him to kiss her, hug her, or hold her hand. He hugged her much more than anything lately, mostly because she needed it. But...a kiss or a handhold...not so much. Or so he assumed. Was he wrong?

"...I did miss it though," Lightning said quietly, looking down at one of the bags of candy. "I noticed you weren't holding my hand anymore but you were still by my side all the time, so I thought..." She sighed, lifting a hand to pinch the bridge of her nose. "I don't know what I thought." They were definitely mixed signals, but she had so many things to cope with then that she couldn't really face the problem.

Riku stared at the floor, not knowing what to say. He couldn't apologize again; it wouldn't make anything better. Did the date itself make things more complicated between them? Riku should have realized that Lightning wanted him more romantically at just the mention, but it took this conversation for him to see it. I'm a dunce.

"But if you were okay with things being how they were the past few weeks, then...I guess we shouldn't be doing this," Lightning said quietly, referring to the date. He didn't try to win her back over the past few weeks when he thought he lost her. That meant he didn't want to be in a relationship with her... I'm stupid. I should have seen it sooner.

"Are you saying you weren't?" Riku asked, turning his head to gaze at the girl beside him. He wanted to make sure he was understanding this correctly. Did Lightning...want this? Did she want to date him? They never referred to each other as boyfriend and girlfriend before, so...would they if things got better between them?

Lightning gave Riku a look--The look that said he was an idiot. "I invited you on a date. I gave in to your flirting this afternoon. I..." She looked away as a slight blush crept into her cheeks. "...like you a lot. Idiot." Of course she wanted to be his girlfriend. But if he didn't want her, then she'd leave.

Riku smirked, taking in Lightning's shyness. He couldn't see her blush because of the lack of lighting, but he liked to imagine it was there. He kept his arm around her, not bothering to move it. He didn't feel like it was necessary. He instead just gazed at her for a moment, then gathering some courage. He leaned forward, brushing his nose against her jaw before his lips stopped near her ear. "I'll be your idiot, if you'll have me," Riku whispered lowly. Lightning was different from the beginning, and he wasn't about to let her get away.
