I decided to get an enclosure for my old hard drive from my dead laptop. So I use it, find every file intact except anything that was saved on my desktop. There's a few things I'm wondering about:

1 - Is saving files on desktops a good idea? I rarely do unless it's something I use a lot, and even then they're shortcuts. (In this case, I had 2 folders)

2 - Any way to recover anything from the desktop folder? Again I have no clue how they disappeared. They were never deleted when my laptop was working. Neither when I used the enclosure.

1. I save files on my desktop all the time, and I've never had any problems.

2. You can search for the files with the search bar, or you can try restoring a previous version of the desktop folder. I can't recommend trying anything else since I've rarely had lost files in the past.

Try finding on your HDD where the files were originally extracted from to make the shortcut. Otherwise yeah.

Well I check my other HD, and all te files win the desktop were intact.

I tried the search, nothing. I'll try to recover previous versions of the desktop, unless it requires system restore, in which I'm screwed. (Old laptops are dead)

Thanks for the responses guys.

Your desktop is just another folder on your computer. The only difference is that the desktop folder will display it on, you guessed it, the desktop

Anything deleted from your desktop folder might be found in the recycling bin. However, that's only a temporary home and anything there will be deleted permanently soon.

Well that's not 100% true, you can still recover files after they have been dumped from the recycling bin. However you need very advanced knowledge of computers and even a special program to recover it, and even then you might not find it or only find parts of the file.

Yeah, I wanted to make sure. What I don't understand is how nothing is in the desktop folder.

Oh well, RIP my 100+ hours of hard work.

Try looking at this guide.

You probably won't recover all of your work, but you might be able to recover a good chunk of it.
