I'd rather become a cyborg through some long, painful process. Imagine a mutation of some disease that causes your limbs to shrivel up and fall off like dead tree branches. While science is working on a cure, engineers figure out a way to connect human nerves with machinery, effectively replacing the lost limbs with mechanical ones that have a variety of features. Don't get me wrong, I'm not asking for pain, but I think it'd be a super interesting origin story
