Jinn helped Oni back down the steps as he shut off the light. He then laid down a few feathers and spoke a single word. The attic shown with light. Then the blood and whatever was behind the boxes was gone.

Oni became confused as to what Jinn was doing or why. She glared at him, demanding, "What was that about?" Realizing that the paper was still in her hand, she crumbled it into a small paper ball and stuffed it into her bag.

"It's an old ritual. It's to help....pass on the spirits of those lost so they cannot be harmed by demons..." Jinn became really quite, sitting on the steps, rubbing his head.

"What are you..." Oni began, but she stopped herself. The blood. The letter from her mother. She was able to put two and together instantly. She stood there, unable to move. She stared out into blank space with wide eyes. Not even her stomachache bothered her. However, when she finally conjured words, she became denying. ".... No. She could be hiding, like you said, right? Right?!"

Jinn looks at Oni, and shakes his head. "I'll give you a moment. Then we have to leave." He slowly walked out of the house. "I'm sorry..." was all he could say to her.

Oni stood in the same spot that she had been in. Finding herself to be alone, she looked up at the room directly across from her. Finding the will, she approached the room and entered it. It was her mother's room. The bed and television were to the left of her, and a dresser in front of her. Oni approached it and examined everything on it. There were brushes, stacks of bills and pictures, and bags of makeup. She stared intently at a picture that sat in the crease of the mirror. It was a picture of her mother holding the hand of a four-year-old Oni. After the longest moment of thinking of many things, Oni came to a decision. Grabbing the picture, she left the room and headed downstairs. She grabbed a box of matches from the kitchen and went down to the basement. Eying the tank nearby, Oni walked to a large stack of dirty clothes. Emptying the box, she lit all of the matches at once before tossing it onto the pile. As the fire slowly turned into a bonfire, Oni stared at with her illuminated red eyes. Finally, she went upstairs and walked out the front door.

Approaching Jinn, she stated hoarsely, "We have about fifteen seconds to leave."

Jinn silently nodded and grew his wings back. "Get on." After Oni got on his back he flew off, high and fast.

After about a dozen or so seconds, Oni had heard the explosion from behind her. Her lip quivered for a second, but she stayed strong. I'm not safe at home, she thought. My mother is dead. There is no point to that place anymore, so burning all of the proofs of the household's existence would be best. She gripped the picture in her hand as tight as she could, having an unbeknown anger coat her. "I don't see the point in it," she muttered, "but I'm going to keep my promise to her. We run."

Jinn flew around the mountains, following a path only he seemed to recognize. "Oni, there may be a place you can go. It's your only hope if you want to stay safe. Also we can train you to fight off these things yourself." His voice sounded a little broken, as if trying to hold something back. "I knew your mother very well. No normal demon couldve....." he grew silent, flying off towards the sea.

"Honestly, I don't want to fight those things in the first place," Oni admitted, a hint of glum in her voice. "If anything, I just want to go under a rock or something. However, if I have to as means to stay alive, for my mom, then so be it." Her face glowered, red eyes lightly lighting up. "I'll have their throats eventually..."

"So, you want to fight?" Jinn looked at Oni with a concerned look. "You don't have to you know. We can train you to defend yourself instead." He swerved slightly to avoid a passing mountaintop.

"I'm certain of it," she snarled quietly. Even to herself, Oni wasn't sure where this demented anger and determination was coming from. To avoid Jinn calling it one of her "demon traits", she decided to simply remain quiet.

They'll all be dead soon enough.... she absentmindedly thought.

Jinn flew for the rest of the day and well into the night. The cloudy skys turned clear when night came, revealing millions of stars. The water below looked pristene save for the occasional wildlife breaking the surface every now and then.

Oni's original arrogance kicked in by this point. Flying on Jinn's back couldn't exactly allow her to catch some shut-eye, so she became slightly groggy. "So, where are we going anyways?" she questioned him, adding in a glare.

"Someplace safe. It's a little ways off now. Not to far." he said, sensing her frustration. "We won't get there for another few hours. So you might as well enjoy the scenery while it's still worth looking it." He then added, before her arrogance made her speak "Arguing with me will not make it go any faster. Four wings may let me fly faster, but it's still quite a long trip."

Finding this to be true, Oni kept quiet. However, her normal needs made her speak up again. "Can't I at least get something to eat?" she asked, almost sounding like a cranky child in the back seat of the car. She honestly didn't feel as though she could live without food for another few hours, and the cold wind pushing past her skin didn't support that either.

Jinn materialized a scythe, then flicking it so the the blade lay straight like a spear, he lowered it to the water and struck four times, each time catching a fish. Then he brought it up to his mouth and spoke a few words. The fish began to sizzle and crack until they were fully cooked. Then he handed the spear to Oni. "Take three."

Oni's head slightly sunk. It wasn't as though she got a kick out of tormenting Jinn, but one slight vow prevented her from taking the food-- she was a vegetarian. After sighing, she mumbled, "I'll just go ahead and wait until we get there..." As an attempt to block out the cold, she buried her head into Jinn's back to get some heat.

Jinn stared at her, then eat the fish whole, each one sliding down his throat. Then he threw the spear down again and this time brought up some sea corn and seaweed. After repeating the process of cooking them, he held it up to Oni. "This more to your taste? It's vegetarian delicacy and is completely safe."

Oni brought her head up to examine the food. After a moment, with her free hand, she went ahead and grabbed the food. "Thanks...." she murmured hastily before taking a bite from the food. After awhile, she added, "So, I'm guessing you aren't going to mock me or anything with demon jokes?"

Jinn just kept on flying. "You just lost your mother. I may be a monster, but not even I'm heartless. No matter how empty I feel." He put the spear away, moving back up to the clouds. He kept silent, occasionally glancing back to make sure Oni was ok.

Taking another bite of her food, Oni mumbled, "That's why you're such a boring character...." After about five minutes, she had finished her seaweed and corn. "Let me know when we get there," she yawned. She wasn't going to go to sleep, however, due to the controversy of the topic that she had in her mind earlier. All that she was going to do was hang on, get as much warmth as she could, and listen to the sound of them diving through the air.

Jinn flew a little ways, then finally spoke. "Oni, look away unless you have a strong stomach. We are about to cross over where the first demon war took place. Even the sky is stained red." Jinn said this in low voice, as the sky turned a dark crimson while they flew over a island, smoking and ash colored.

Not feeling like making a sarcastic remark, Oni went ahead and kept her eyes shut. Her eyes didn't have to be open to know how much blood there was. "The first war...?" Oni asked, figuring that the war must have been so old. "Why does it reek so badly?"

"Over 257,000 years ago, a werewolf by the name of Lokora went on a killing spree. He rallied up many demons who hated the laws back then and cause a mass massacre. This is what's left of the ancient war, a once beautiful island now containing only death, decay, and sorrow."
