"I think...you should use this as an opportunity to make the number your own," Naminé said and brought a hand to her heart. She knew the feeling of having the past haunt her. Ever since her departure

"Alright," she affirmed with a nod. Though she didn't say it, the artist wanted to tell him that she would follow him anywhere. That she felt safe with him wherever they went.

Since Namine still had her arm looped with his, Roxas started forward. He clapped Sora on the shoulder as he passed. “We’re gonna go get more ice cream. Be right back, okay?” Conveniently, Kairi and Noel ventured in that direction. It wouldn’t be too hard to find them.

"Okay, sure. Yeah," Sora mumbled without meeting their eyes. He already wanted to leave, but the thought of being alone at the dorms was even worse.

As Sora became more and more of a distant figure in the background, Naminé found herself whispering to her companion. "How do you want to do this?" She could see them a little further ahead now. Happy as they has been before.

“I’ll challenge Noel to a friendly game of ring toss,” Roxas declared with a handsome smirk. He looked to his companion and then followed her gaze to the couple ahead. Sadly, he had to admit they were a couple. Roxas always thought he would say that about Sora and Kairi, not Kairi and another guy.

"I can talk to Kairi then," Naminé replied with determination. She would do her best to help Sora while respecting her best friend's feelings. The blonde was confident, however, that the red head's heart belonged to Sora. It was her hurt that needed to be mended.

Roxas lifted a hand and squeezed Namine's on his arm. Here we go. "Kairi!" he called then, lifted his free arm in a slight wave. The redhead turned to see them and smiled instantly, not that her smile ever really disappeared with Noel around. Her date looked over too and briefly waved a hand, since he was in the middle of a game.

"What are you two up to?" Naminé chirped, keeping her smile intact. She wasn't sure how to respond to Noel's wave but offered a weak one of her own anyway. Noel wasn't a bad guy but seeing him with Kairi was unsettling.

"Just playing some games," Kairi answered with the same smile. She still had her unicorn in her arms, which Noel won for her at their last game. "You guys?" She noticed they were...closer than normal. Kairi sent Namine a subtle look. When did this start?

Roxas smirked. "Looking for some competition, actually," he said. "Noel, you want a challenger?"

Noel chuckled. "If you think you can take me on, challenge accepted." He just finished this ring toss game, but he could give it another go. He waved Roxas over before touching Kairi's back. "You don't mind, right?"

Kairi shook her head. "It's okay. Do your thing." Noel grinned and leaned over, pecking her on the cheek. Kairi's face flushed immediately, and if she looked over then, she would have seen Roxas's smile falter at the affection. Instead, she giggled faintly.

Roxas glanced at Namine. "Your turn," he murmured to her secretly. She could do this. They both had to, for Sora's sake. He removed himself from her with a faint smile and made his way toward Noel.

"C'mon, we can watch them play from over here," Naminé said, gesturing for Kairi to follow her to a small space beside the game. She ignored the kiss Noel had planted on her cheek. People still milled about as they stood. Couples and families with sticks of cotton candy. Everyone looked so happy.

Kairi nodded a little and followed Namine as she suggested. She faced the boys and watched them each get their rings to play. The sight made her smile; she was happy to see one of her friends getting to know Noel, or at least putting in the effort. Nobody else had really done that...

"How are things going with you two?" Naminé asked, "You two seem pretty happy..." Naminé wasn't sure how much she should say, but her eyes kept wandering back to the unicorn in Kairi's arm.

"Good," Kairi answered, nodding a bit. "Noel's...fun." And he was cute. Super cute. And nice and strong and tall... But even so, Sora's face kept popping into her head. Why? After all he said, after all he did--and didn't do--why should she think about him?

"He seems to be," Naminé observed, watching the two boys with a faint smile. It was good seeing Roxas at least enjoy his little competition. "Have you and Sora talked at all? He's been pretty quiet with us lately." He misses you, Kairi.

Kairi's smile fell at the mention of the boy she couldn't stop thinking about. She watched a ring skip over a bottle. "...No," she answered softly. She hadn't talked to Sora at all. Not since their argument days ago. It felt like it had been weeks.

Naminé kept her focus on the boys, but her words were for Kairi. "You two should talk. Sora hasn't been himself at all lately." Barely smiling. Picking at his food. Staring off into space. The keyblade's chosen one was barely alive.

“You think it’s because of me?” Kairi wondered aloud. She looked at the girl to her side, confused. Obviously Sora and Kairi disagreed on a few things, but...it affected him that much?

Naminé bit her lip, thinking about what she would say very carefully. She couldn't expose Sora's heart no matter how much she wanted to see the two happy together. "You and Sora...have known each other for a long time. You're...best friends." Her voice faltered slightly at the term. "You're hearts are connected...tightly to one another." His memories of you are the most important ones he has. Without those, Sora is no longer Sora.

Kairi didn’t know exactly how to respond, so she didn’t. Could she talk to Sora now? She was here with Noel, for one. Secondly, what could she say to him? He judged her pretty harshly for liking that boys noticed her...even if it was his attention she wanted all along.

Finally, Naminé turned towards her other; the expression she wore was warm and encouraging as she touched the girl's arm with a pale hand. "You two need to talk. Noel will understand. He knows Sora is someone special to you." Though, admittedly, the word special had many connotations. She wondered if Noel could see it?

  • Author

Someone special, Kairi thought to herself. She had to agree—in more ways than one. “...Is he here?” she asked, suddenly nervous. If Sora was as upset as Namine made it seem, did he even bother coming to the festival? Did he even want to see her?

"He's over there," Naminé pointed out the boy in the red hoodie now sitting beneath a large oak tree picking at platelets of grass. There was an air of lifelessness about him. His eyes were downcast, and other festival attendees seemed to even avoid him.

Upon seeing him, Kairi felt her heart give a painful tug. Sora...she thought sadly. Her eyes darted to Noel, who was still wrapped up in the game with Roxas, before moving back to Sora. Her heart longed for her to be by his side, so she would do as it said. “Can you hold this for me?” Kairi asked quietly, holding her prize out to Namine. She would be back.

Naminé took the stuffed unicorn and held it under her arm and watched her friend approach the glum boy with a hopeful smile. Please let them be okay.

Kairi linked her hands behind her when she got closer to her best friend—though it didn’t feel like they were best friends lately. The realization saddened her, but she tried not to let it show too much. Nervously, she called to him. “Sora?”

The boy looked up, slightly frustrated that his heart leaped at the sound of her voice, but also...relieved? He hadn't spoken to Kairi in too long. The uncertainty in her voice, that usually rang out confidently, caused him to hesitate as well. "K-Kairi?" He wanted to ask where Noel was, but the boy's name was still like poison on his lips.
