"I think...you should use this as an opportunity to make the number your own," Naminé said and brought a hand to her heart. She knew the feeling of having the past haunt her. Ever since her departure

"Oh, Roxas," she pushed him gently as small smile etched itself onto her lips. That makes one of us. He really was too sweet.

Sora plopped down beside Kairi then and snatched the remote from Roxas with a mischievous grin. "I know the perfect movie for us to watch!" He scrolled down a few columns and clicked on a title with an Elvish hero on the front. "Riku and I would watch this all the time back on the islands when Kairi did her sleepovers with Selphie."

Roxas chuckled at Namine's gentle shove, but when Sora snatched the remote, he tried reaching for it and nearly fell off Namine's bed. He readjusted and settled in next to Namine, slouching against the pillows and resting his arms behind his head.

"Such a long time ago," Kairi sighed wistfully, already cozy underneath a blanket she had folded at the end of her bed. It now draped comfortably over her legs. Sora's cologne wafted toward her when he sat down beside her, and she tried not to let it affect her too much. That he was even sitting next to her for this moving was great on its own.

Naminé giggled when Roxas fell off the bed, but offered a blanket to him once he settled beside her again.

"I know. Crazy how much time has passed," Sora remarked and pulled part of her blanket towards him. The fabric was a soft burgundy. On the screen, the hero appeared on screen brandishing his sword with a triumphant yell. "I wonder how Riku's doing? Him and Lightning were getting especially close lately."

"Thank you," Roxas murmured quietly, smiling over at Namine. He spread the blanket so it was over both of them before putting his hands behind his head again. He fought hard not to stare at her when she was so close, managing to tear his eyes away to look at the television.

Kairi shrugged faintly and gave Sora more of her blanket. "With those two, it's hard telling. He is quite fond of her, though." She smiled to herself. "I think it's sweet. Riku's never opened up to someone like he has with her." It was new, but exciting too. She was happy for her best friend.

"You're welcome," Naminé returned. As the movie continued, Naminé felt her eyelids droop and shifted so that her head that it rested on Roxas's chest. His heartbeat was soothing to the blonde; a reminder of their humanity.

"Yeah," Sora whispered, moving to wrap an arm around Kairi's shoulders absentmindedly. He liked seeing his other best friend so happy. "I wonder when they'll get together?" If they aren't already...

Roxas lowered his chin slightly to look at Namine, eyes widening a bit when she moved closer. But...he felt warm inside. His heart...It liked her close proximity. The boy couldn't help but smile. Namine...

When Sora's arm went around her shoulders, Kairi felt her heart skip a beat. Did he...mean to do that? Or was it just natural for him? Either way, she slowly moved closer, snuggling up to his side. She kept her head up, not leaning it on him yet. Her eyes did fall to the blanket they shared, the girl fingering the fabric lazily. "I give them until Christmas," she replied quietly as not to disturb Roxas and Namine's viewing of the movie. Riku would make a move by then, and if he didn't, Lightning seemed bold enough to do it herself.

Sora wiggled his eyebrows. "Wanna make a bet? I say before Christmas break." He wasn't sure Riku could wait even that long. His best friend seemed so over the moon that it was hard to imagine him being able to keep quiet, especially with other guys eyeing her up--something Sora could relate to.

Kairi met Sora's eyes, fighting a blush at that charming eyebrow gesture. He really didn't recognize how attractive he was, did he? "Okay," she agreed, her voice soft given the movie and their close proximity. She could feel his breath on her skin whenever he spoke... "When I win," she began confidently, "what do I get?"

Roxas ignored Sora and Kairi's muted conversation, still focused on the blonde resting against him. Did he make her that comfortable that she could fall asleep on him? He knew that her past was rocky and letting people close was difficult...but with him? He guessed it was different. Carefully, he moved one of his hands to brush her hair back, his fingertips lightly brushing her skin. Was she asleep already?

Her closeness...Sora inhaled her perfume and tried to stifle his heartbeat from becoming too obvious. Conceal, don't feel...Sora thought to himself, thinking of his adventures in Arendale. He couldn't let himself be so obvious about his feelings. "Heh, what would you like?"

Naminé stirred slightly at the touch but her eyes remained closed. She felt...safe. When was the last time she slept so soundly? Without any nightmares plaguing her...

Kairi felt her cheeks growing hot. Please don't notice, she thought to Sora. How embarrassing would that be? "...I can think of a few things," she teased quietly. Her eyes briefly fell to his lips, but she redirected them to his eyes again. Without realizing, she gave Sora a hint: him. She wanted him, but that would be too weird... She couldn't possibly say that. She heard other girls talking about how cute he was, some even asking her about him since she was with him so often. Surely he would prefer one of them--models--to her.

Roxas's hand froze when Namine moved. But...she didn't wake up. His smile softened a little and he moved his hand to rest on her shoulder, keeping her close. He would make sure she stayed warm, and comfortable.

Sora's cheeks lit up at the insinuation of her words. "Um...l-like what?" he stuttered. Was she implying that she wanted him? But that couldn't be...right? They were just friends. Not that he didn't want to be something more...Yet, with all the guys around her. All the attractive guys around her...I can't compete...

Kairi smiled shyly. "I'll let you know," she told him quietly, catching the redness in Sora's cheeks. God, he was so cute! Her words implied she would win this bet. Before Christmas break, Sora won. After, Kairi won. But...there was one thing left unsaid. "What about you?" If Sora won, what did he want?

"Um..." What did he want? To share a paopu. The thought darted into his head before being pushed away quickly. No! That's too obvious. Way too obvious. "We could go to the Kingdom of Corona together. Yeah, um...there's this festival that takes place. We could dance. With music." Wow, he sounded stupid. He hoped Kairi wouldn't notice. Or think he was desperate.

Kairi's smile widened with every word. "Can we see the floating lights?" she asked softly. She heard of them briefly when Sora mentioned them in the past, but she never got to witness them for herself. It sounded awfully pretty. And romantic...

"Of course!" Sora chirped back with a smile to mirror Kairi's. "They're really beautiful..." He looked to her violet eyes that shined under the dim lighting of the room. It made him want to kiss her...But I can't...

Kairi snuggled closer to Sora from excitement, wrapping her arm over his stomach in glee. "I might just hope you win," she told him softly, her head resting under his chin. She looked forward to that day. Maybe they could go whether Riku and Lightning got together or not. Just the two of them...

"I hope I win too," Sora teased back softly. Her arm around his stomach was warm and made is heart nearly burst from the rush of joy. He wanted to be with Kairi. Take her to Corona. "Let's just hope Riku cracks before Christmas then, huh?"

  • Author

Kairi giggled softly. "Mm-hm," she hummed, closing her eyes at the thought. Corona... Sora had taken pictures while he was there. She couldn't wait. Maybe they would have to manipulate the outcome of this bet.

Sora woke up in a sweat. The echoes of a nightmare still clinging to him. He checked beside him for Kairi, who had been swallowed by the darkness in his dreamscape only moments ago. "Kairi...?" he whispered.

Kairi hummed softly in her sleep, having thought she heard her name but too lost in sleep to really know. She snuggled further into Sora, pulling his arm closer that was around her waist and stomach as she kept her back to his chest. Something in her heart told her he was upset, so she wanted him close. I'm here, her heart replied.

Feeling her draw closer to him, Sora's hands, the trembling, stopped. His heart slowed back to an easy rhythm again. She's safe. Here in my arms. His grip tightened. Why couldn't he do this every day? Her light seemed to drive the darkness away.

Kairi woke slightly, but only enough to murmur a few words. "You okay?" she mumbled quietly. Sora... She barely heard him call for her, and he seemed upset. Her heart stirred at that realization. His warmth soothed her always, so she hoped her presence could do the same.

Roxas's eyebrows furrowed slightly when he thought he heard something. Was Sora talking in his sleep again? The boy sighed softly and pulled the girl in his arms closer, his face buried in her blonde hair. He barely recognized their position, too comfortable to really care. She was soft, and warm, and fit perfectly in his arms.

"Mmm, yeah," Sora mumbled drowsily, "I'm okay...now." He didn't want to describe the horrors in his head. The feel of Xehanort's darkness crawling all over him, looking for a single crack in his mask. How the Seeker had held Kairi before throwing her like a rag doll into a sea of inky heartless. It was too much.

Naminé sighed contently and burrowed her face against Roxas's chest. Kairi's voice was like a distant wave as she slept. Most times she would wake and see what the red head was doing, but with Roxas, her head was filled to the brim with bliss and her eyes wouldn't open even a crack.

"You sure?" Kairi asked, turning her head against the pillow to look over her shoulder at the boy in bed with her. The boy in bed with her...Sora... How couldn't she sleep peacefully with him beside her? She couldn't remember ever falling asleep next to him before this, not even on the Islands as children.

Roxas moved his hand up Namine's back when she shifted, though he exhaled sleepily into her hair. Her shampoo smelled heavenly, whatever she used; he'd noticed before it was nice, but he had never been this close to really tell for sure.

Sora nodded, letting out a small yawn before nestling his chin on top of her head. "I'm sure. Don't worry. I just get...nightmares sometimes." He wouldn't disturb her sleep withe details though. Sora was sure Kairi suffered from her own set of mental horrors. "I feel better with you here though."

His hand felt warm against her back, and even asleep Naminé craved his touch. Would she ever feel as secure, as happy as she did right now in his arms? Naminé doubted it. She and Roxas...they saw one another as they were. As themselves. No matter how long she was her own person, she knew Roxas would be the only person in the world to understand that.
