Guess what!... this isn't a complex convoluted theory about who he is; just a lot of random things I noticed about him and connections to others.
VS. Xemnas
The Unknown of kh1fm when foiled to the mysterious figure shows some very interesting things and subjects. Once you get past their weapons, cloaks, and secret boss-ish-ness they are hardly similar. Xemnas says "allow me to test your power," indicating that he is acting upon free will and his own agenda, being influenced by no one other than himself. He also states "this is going to be enjoyable,"; this is merely showing his malicious, evil, lunatic, wicked agenda. Other than this he also expresses quite a few unchivalrous and plain out rude actions such as attacking Sora without a weapon, walking through Sora like he wasn't even there and talking in riddles kind of, because he knew how annoying it was to Sora.
Now if we may compare this to our mysterious friend. The mysterious figure while never saying anything expresses quite a few things and an expression is worth a thousand words. Nomura even talked about inferring the what the expressions of SRK were in kh2 when mickeys letter arrives. Before the battle he waits and when Terra, Aqua, or Ven turn around he slowly turns around and it closes up on his face. This is meaning he is reflecting on the encounter and after this he is quick to make it a fight because insert reason here. This isn't just him thinking look a person is there I wonder if if should fight this person, the mysterious figure obviously has some sentimental affiliations with the trio of this game. Following the fight he appears one more time to reflect on the encounter, this time looking down either in shame of fighting or with some emotion of melancholy. Concerning his chivalry I think the mysterious figure is somewhat similar to Riku, especially in kh2 such as his actions at Land of the dragons. I will discuss this in detail later. The mysterious figure doesn't attack them without weapons, he doesn't rudely walk through them, and he doesn't want to annoy them for a self centered reason.
VS. Riku
Concerning the similarity to Riku, look at Riku's motives and actions. He merely does not want to be seen by Sora and he is truly quite the rude dark hero. He fought Sora on the mountain and why? just to fight him. Why can the mysterious figure not be this way? The lingering sentiment ended up being a hero. The mysterious figure does seem a bit more 'together' than Riku, but their position still may be the same.
Music
As I said before the mysterious figure has almost a melancholy aurora about, and even his music demonstrates that same sort of sadness (listen here:Dark Impetus 00:20-00:50 This can also be compared to
.
Back to the title: "Dark Impetus". The definitions of Impetus are as follows:
the act of applying force suddenly
So this would be a dark act of a applying force suddenly. I see how this definition would fit as the MF is quite sudden.
a force that moves something along
So the mysterious figure would be a dark force that moves something along. While this definition is a bit more ambiguous as how it ties into the MF, its connotations could be telling of a bit more about the mysterious figure we haven't examined.
Nobodies
If you compare how the two actually arrive at the locations it is almost identical with the fading affect. And this brings me to part 2 of my idea, the theory. Marluxia and Xemnas are both nobodies and both can pass through people or let people pass through them. I am not strictly saying he is a nobody, but he is using an ability of one. On the subject of abilities, look at all the abilities he uses, we have used almost all of them in some way. An idea I have is along with his time abilities he uses a simple slow on your character making him appear to go much faster. The abilities can be tied to his past possibly and the idea that he is just using slow might mean he was trying as hard as we think, and this means he might not have been as motivated to fight any one of them just like Riku in land of the dragons.
Time Travel
Now for the cliche time travel part (which even I dread to say): Through the powers of the realms of nothing, which we know is where "time has almost ceased to exist," and darkness, where time travels further, did the mysterious figure's powers originate, along with the unique situation of Ansem sod's birth.
Vanitas' sentiment
The last thing I am going to talk about is his connection to Vanitas' spirit. A good place to start is to ensure there is a connection huh? Lets look at the similarities:
-On Void Gear two eyes are focus points and on No name the same points exist
-The teeth of both have an obviously intentional identical pattern
Other than this we know gears and clocks go together
-Both are secret, not just optional bosses
-Both the names Void Gear and No name connotate an absence of...
-The master aprentice relationship would be present
Along with this connection Vanitas is to popular of a character to just die. So now the question is how are they connected. An educated guess can be barely formed so I am not going to go into my opinion. I am 100% positive that there is a connection and if you challenge wish to challenge this belief, please do.
Final thoughts
Based on the fact that the mysterious figure may not be that bad after all and that he, being a part of the Xehanort mess, cannot live forever I feel like he will have a tragic ending. It's motivations can only be speculated from "Dark Impetus," its melancholy reaction after the battle among other things. His origin honestly could be lost at any time of the kh series due to the time travel and the connection to Vanitas' sentiment is something I don't even want to think about. Finally I can't wait for the next kh.
