Angry Birds Dev Declares Console Games "Dying"

Posted

Rovio's public face sees the end of $50 games.

Rovio's own "Mighty Eagle" Peter Vesterbacka is out ruffling feathers again. Following his jovial-turned-contentious talk at the Game Developer's Conference, Vesterbacka came loaded for bear at South by Southwest Interactive in Texas this weekend.

At a panel moderated by Venture Beat, Vesterbacka continued his thread of mobile games being an exciting place, full of innovation, which is something tough to argue against. However, Vesterbacka went on to declare that console games are "dying" and the idea of paying $50 for a game is going the way of the dodo.

That's a bold statement, considering the continued success of console games like Call of Duty: Black Ops, which has sold 13.7 million units in America alone. Rovio's Angry Birds has been downloaded

So just because a somewhat addicting iPhone game has success, they think it's right to declare that console games are dying?

Console units are still bringing in large numbers, and disk based games are still selling big, especially the huge titles like CoD and upcoming games like Mass Effect 3 and Uncharted 3. He is so wrong.

If he thinks console games are dying, why is he letting them port Angry Birds over to the 3DS? Doesn't make much sense to me. Oh, and if he thinks that those stupid iPhone games (even his oh so successful Angry Birds) can replace games like Halo, CoD, FF, Mario, Pokemon, Dragon Age, Kingdom Hearts, etc. Then I think is very sadly mistaken and needs to be checked in to the nearest mental hospital. Sure the people who are cheap and only want games that last 5 minutes are going to go for the iPhone games, but people who actually want to have more than mindless fun are going to stick with REAL, DEDICATED video game consoles.

I don't really see how Angry Birds success constitutes proof.

The game costs a few bucks, of course lots of people buy it. Especially with all the press right now, at most 5 bucks, almost always drastically less than that, isn't much of an entry fee for a game that people seem to like so much.

But some people like games with story, narrative, complex gameplay, or , really, any type of gameplay not found at an arcade.

It's nice to see arcade style games getting a resurgence though.

It was ported to ps3 and psp too

I agree with all of your points. He might think things will be like steam where download it ditaging and play and won't have to go in store and buy the games. But i don't think that consules are dead for long time

my respect level for the angry birds developers was about 7/10

after ready this, it has instantly lowered to 2/10

-With Smart phones you can get quality games that keep you entertained for hours for the average price of 2 dollars.

- Smart phone games are also going back to the original roots of gaming. To have fun. Lately consoles have been spewing all this crap out just to make more money and appeal to people who take gaming way to seriously.

-Console games entertain you but are 30 times as expensive and the price keeps increasing due to failing economies and piracy.

- PC Gaming is also taking over, with games costing about 10 to 20 dollars less, having more active and loyal communities, and free online services. PCs are also more powerful than consoles. In order to make a console run games as smoothly as a PC then they would have to be upgraded so much that they cost as much as a high end PC making them pointless.

-Consoles have less loyal communities. The amount of people playing a online game keeps decreasing until there are hardly any left. On the PC the game communities decrease at a slower rate and then even out at a certain point for, in some cases, a decade. In other words for 10 to 20 dollars less, PC games last longer and are still the same as their console counterparts if not they are superior.

-Connections for online are TERRIBLE for consoles. They require a single person to host the game and as a result if the host lags everyone in the lobby lags. If the host leaves then you need to go through the painfully slow process of connecting to the new host. On the PC there are dedicated servers minimizing lag and allowing admins who can remove cheaters. Online gaming for the smartphone hasn't really become popular yet but due to the individual devices it will probably suffer the same lag fest that consoles suffer from.

Whether you like it or not, the guy is right. Console gaming is going to die off one day. Not this year or next year. But in 10 to 20 years there will be little point in consoles or even computers to be honest. Every way to game these days is just superior to consoles. Everything that can be made on consoles can be created on PC and eventually smartphones when they get fast enough. The difference being is that consoles are fat, loud, and trouble some machines that's only purpose is for gaming. Sure you can watch movies and even browse the web on those beast now but the other devices on the market do it better. Once Smart Phones become as powerful as a computer and/or affordable computers are powerful enough to run most games on high settings then console gaming will die.

TL;DR- Consoles will be dead within a decade because smartphones and computers will become more powerful then consoles and don't have so many damn issues.

There's more to it than just being entertained. The aforementioned 2 dollar games provide simple fun, but you won't be seeing a 2 dollar RPG or anything like that. Consoles succeed because they are simple to use, and have premade standards that will always accommodate the games available on said console. The PC requires constant upgrading to play games, and sooner or later won't be able to play the games at all.

Not to mention much more difficult to set up.

It's really a convenience thing, consoles don't require you set up a controller, and they have great exclusives.

I beg to differ

Upgrades, maybe. Constant definitely not. Right now the power needing to run games is advancing slower than the power computers have. The last time I upgraded my computer was 3 years ago and it can still run the latest games and medium to high settings

Not really, anyone who can't properly install new hardware shouldn't own a computer or at the very most, go with a MAC.

In order to play with your friends when they are over at your place you have to buy additional controllers which cost as much as 50 dollars. You also need to purchase adaptors, hardrives and other things that are necessary to get out of your console. By the time you finish you would of spent the price of a smart phone or in the case of the Xbox 360 the price of a PC.

See bold

I know all that, but at first glance, a console is simply the less intimidating of the two. And believe it or not, most people who own computers don't know how to do stuff like that. The people on the internet are a minority.

The problem with PCs is that you have to upgrade at all really. Sure consoles have their share of enhancements and such, but you'll never turn on your console one day and not be able to play your games (I'm talking from my own and my friends experience here, most modern computers can't run old games) meanwhile playing the newest games tends to require an annual purchase, or at least upgrade, of your computer. And since the average buyer doesn't know how to upgrade a computer in any sense, they'll probably go with the 'simpler' console

Me personally, I prefer consoles simply because they're built to play games. With so much else to do on a computer, I tend to forget about any games I'm playing on it.
