Something about two of No Heart's attacks.

There are two attacks that I don't get. They are the ones where the dark circles appear on the floor, one has a big dark ring rising from the out side and a beam of light in the center, the other is the same except without the beam of light and the dark ring. What exactly is it that they do? If I understand correctly, the one with the beam of light randomly increases or decreases the distance that your dodge move will let you go, but I'm not sure.
