Anyone reading Spider-Man comics in the mid '90s will know the name Scarlet Spider. That was the code-name of Ben Reilly, clone of Peter Parker and onetime replacement Spider-Man. And despite all the bad juju the Clone Saga still carries, Scarlet Spider himself still has a healthy fan-base.
If the Age of Apocalypse can make a comeback, why not Scarlet Spider too? Marvel already hinted at the return of the character with the recent Point One teaser. Today at the Amazing Spider-Man panel at NYCC, they shed a little more light on what 2012 holds in store for the character.
Writer Chris Yost and artist Ryan Stegman will be handling the character's return. The story begins in November in the Scarlet Spider segment of the Point One anthology issue. From there, the character will spin out into a solo series in January.
Despite the name, fans shouldn't be assuming it's actually Ben Reilly under the costume, or even a male character (Amazing Spider-Man #671 offers some hints as to who might be donning the costume). Nor should fans expect Scarlet Spider to be hanging around New York. The series will see the character embark on a road trip and confront a new challenge in Houston.
