his accent was so thick he was hard to understand, lolz at the hippies with their "no dams"signs!!

Being Australian I understood the 'jokes'. It was more a play on words than anything, making reference to Australian towns, animals and historical events, so non-aussies probably won't get it. For example he said to the kid "you reek of stockade" which is actually "Euraka Stockade," a historical event that took place in Ballarat during the gold mining days (I think).
