"More changes are afoot at DC's mature-readers imprint, Vertigo Comics, as longtime Executive Editor and Senior Vice President Karen Berger is stepping down after almost 20 years of spearheading arguably the industry's most progressive comic book imprint. Berger began her career at DC Comics as an editor on books like House of Mystery and Alan Moore's Swamp Thing, which eventually led to her shepherding of Neil Gaiman's Sandman and the birth of Vertigo Comics in 1993."

In her 33 years at DC she help deliver such classics as Y: The Last Man, Preacher, Hellblazer, We3, American Vampire, V for Vendetta, 100 Bullets, Fables, Scalped, Transmetropolitan and some many others.

"Berger's influence on the growth of comics industry is insurmountable, but she's leaving in pursuit of new opportunities. DC says that she'll be staying on board until March 2013 to help the transition to new leadership go smoothly. Though not named, DC says that the new team will consist of "veteran staffers.""

"I've been incredibly proud to have provided a home where writers and artists could create progressive and provocative stories that broadened the scope of comics, attracting a new and diverse readership to graphic storytelling," said Berger.  "I'd like to thank all the many immensely talented creators who have helped make Vertigo into a daring and distinctive imprint and I’m grateful to everyone at DC Entertainment and the retail community for their support and commitment to Vertigo all these years.  It’s been quite an honor."

"DC also said that they'll be planning a celebration of Berger's 33 years at the company next year."

"While Vertigo has seen a decrease in ongoing series as of late -- their longest-running title, Hellblazer, was recently cancelled -- the publisher seems to be increasing output on their limited series, adding to the nearly 300 new properties that Vertigo has ushered in since its inception. A Sandman prequel series by Neil Gaiman and J.H. Williams III is expected next year though, alongside a slew of new mini-series from Vertigo alumni like Scott Snyder and Jeff Lemire."

She's one of the  most important people in modern comics
