Changes Of Rock Musical Style Over The Years.

Posted

Hey everyone, how's it going?  I hope your all doing okay!  You know something, I've been listening to rock music since about 2007 or 2008, and over the course of these years, I've gone on to listen to many many bands, and I have to say the variety and wealth of music is awesome.  But lately there are some bands that are losing steam, like Linkin Park.  I mean seriously, they were epic for many years, including 2009, but then from then on, their music started to sound weird and I got really drawn away from Linkin Park, and instead, I'm listening to their older songs.  What I mean to say is, that so many bands have changed their musical style that sometimes it's good, but other times it can be disastrous.  To me, some of the bands that have always been great and continue on their road to greatness are Skillet, 30 Seconds To Mars and System Of A Down.  These bands that I've mentioned have stuck closely to the musical styles that have made them famous, and they've added tiny differences during the course of their albums, but the changes have been good.  In my opinion, Skillet's best album was Comatose, which released on the year 2006.  Another notable band that released an album in that year was Three Days Grace, when they released their album One X.  I've listened to lots of songs from 2006, and, comparing to the more modern ones, the ones from 2006 sound seemingly better.  I know that most people will say that the best era of rock was in the 80's or 90's, and I agree with those people, but since I'm a more recent rock aficionado, I look fondly back to 2006.  So then everyone, do you think 2006 was a good year for rock, or do you think another year did it better?  Thoughts and comments below. ^_^

congratulations you figured out that musicians too also evolve with the passage of time

you know, like everyone else

As time passes by evolution happens. Everyone will have a different opinion as to what year was the best. Honestly imo, I don't care much about what year since it was so far back but I know music used to be good and there is still good music today as it all comes down to taste and opinion.

I like rock, both olden and modern, but I have to agree about your opinion of changes in musical style. Linkin Park did start to lose steam, especially with A Thousand Suns, which almost no LP fan likes. BUT, even though they are not the same anymore, I really like their new album, Living Things. It's different, but it's still good to listen to. I think it's an example of a good change (fixing the bad change, but still not the old LP) Three Days Grace is also a great band that has brought out a good change for them. I love all their albums. Their new one, Transit of Venus, in my opinion, is another example of a good change. It's more lighthearted than their older albums, but that doesn't make it bad. While 2006 could arguably be the best year of modern rock, there's still good albums coming out even now.

That's very true.  And there are a whole lot of new albums coming out this year that I'm crazy to hear about, and it's Skillet's new Album Rise, of which I've heard two of their songs already, which are Sick Of It and American Noise, and the songs sound epic, and also, I think 30 Seconds To Mars already released a new album, because I heard a song of theirs called Up In The Air, which is amazing. I agree that there are still good songs to listen to nowadays, we just have to have a good eye and good ears to spot them out. :)

LP's always been a good band, IMO, even with the change in style. I never got why other fans starting to shy away after they went into the more U2-ish style they've been on since Minutes To Midnight and following into Thousand Suns and Living Things. I'm proud to say I've listened to all their albums and love each of them equally.

Here's the thing: Yes, HT and Meteora had a good formula, with the nu metal elements and all that jazz. BUT, I think something that people forget about when it comes to Linkin Park is not how their music sounds like, but what you're supposed to feel through their music. LP doesn't write songs just for fun, their songs are about emotion that move people in a way; it can be sad, it can be angry, and more than often now, it can be uplifting. The fact that they change their style at MTM doesn't bother me. MTM may be my favorite LP album. Thousand Suns is underrated, I think, and Living Things should still have a lot of steam even now, considering it mixes in both the new style and the old style. I don't think LP deserves the hate it gets from fans who are stuck on the nu metal sound, either. In Mike Shinoda's words: "Try to catch up, motherf**kers".

All in all, what's been said about evolution already is true; an artist, regardless of their music genre, needs to grow, and growth means change. Now, change can be good, and I admit, it can be bad. However, more than likely it can be good. Look at 3DG and their new album Transit Of Ventus. This album ditches their usual angst filled formula for something a little more fun, IMO, and I think it's nice to see them experiment outside of their comfort zone. And no, there is no bias here just because they cover a Michael Jackson song. I will say, though, that is nice touch. :) Another example can stem from Device, the new band created by Disturbed frontman Damine Draiman. Draiman has a more industrial sound with this band, unlike the Hellish and pounding style of Disturbed. They still have the same kind of flavor in a way, but even so, it does a good job at straying from Draiman's other band.

Yep, exactly. I do like the two new singles Skillet released for their new album as well. Haven't given 30 Second's new album a listen yet though, I'm not a huge fan of theirs, but I still have a couple of songs from them. Green Day and Red Hot Chili Peppers are really good bands too!

Hate to turn this into a Linkin Park thread, but:

Yeah, I can't disrespect your opinion here. I really do like how 3DG did Transit; I think they pulled it off well.

So THAT'S why Disturbed has been on hiatus... I shoulda known...

I like your opinions guys, they're really interesting, and Firaga96, I salute you on your Linkin Park opinion, I really liked it, and I've decided to give one of their more recent songs a listen. :)  And there is also this one band that I love who has always been a favorite of mine, and that's Metallica.  I mean seriously, James Hetfield and the gang have always delivered epic songs, and with time, they've evolved for the better, and in more albums, you can notice the change in tone in terms of lyrics.  Three of the songs that I most cherish from this band are The Unforgiven trilogy.  These three songs are probably my favorite from them, and you can notice the different awesome styles they show, and the deep messages in each of them.  They were supposed to release a new album last year, but they didn't, although they released Beyond Magnetic, which was an EP that had 4 songs not included in Death Magnetic, which sound awesome.  But anyways, I WANT METALLICA TO RELEASE AT LEAST ONE MORE ALBUM.  I KNOW THAT THEY'RE OLD AS HECK, BUT THEY STILL HAVE LIFE IN THEM! D:

My favorite band, the Goo Goo Dolls, changes each couple albums.

In late 1980s when they started, they used to be heavy punk rock band for the first 2 albums (which I didnt really like) then on their third album, Hold Me Up, to the 5th album, A Boy Named Goo, they played in a form of the Replacements, which sounded pretty cool. The 5th album was the beginning of a new change, for the song called "Name" is an open-tuning rock ballad and that song was the foundation of the new change in the 6th album, Dizzy Up the Girl.

In the 6th album, it held the famous Iris, and numerous rock ballads and some of their alternative rock songs as well, and their 7th album, Gutterflower, they added more open-tuning ballads, and their rock core went mainstream. It gotten quieter, but still upbeat. 8th album, Let Love In, contained more ballads, and they gotten more mellow. the 9th album, changed their playing. There is no ballads, the tone is dark, for it talks about the world we are living in. and the new album coming soon, Magnetic, changes drastically. They are trying to be more happy, light and upbeat. Couple ballads will show up, and will have electronic sounds in them.

As you see my summary above, they constantly changing, and loyal fans will love the songs no matter what. But what I hate about, is seeing people saying that they were the best in their 80s. That ticks me off. every band evolves no matter what. If you keep doing the same thing, you will lose your insight. The Goos kept evolving, and they are still successful and badass as they were back then.

That's my opinion on the evolution of rock.
