My short review of Interstella 5555

Posted

This might belong in the "Random" section, so if that is the case, then I would like this to be moved there.

Interstella 5555 is an animated film that was originally released in 2005. It is unique in the way that it contains absolutely no dialogue and irregular sound effects; the entirety of the film going in accordance to an album from Daft Punk. It has the appearance of Anime, but has had French involvement in its creation.

The topic of the film involves a race resembling humans (but with blue skin) that lives in a different universe from Earth. The main characters of the story are four members of a popular band that exists for the entertainment of other members of their race, and the story revolves around their capture and being transported to earth, with the primary antagonist having some unexpectedly dangerous motives.

Though this film does not have any dialogue coming directly from the characters, the way that this film is presented makes the presence of dialogue seem unnecessary, and though the absence of dialogue may seem strange at first, it is not hard to get used to. The music that plays throughout the film is largely non-vocal, and plays in accordance to the various occurrences in the film. I have found some parts of it to be headache-inducing, though. The film has the looks of a typical Anime, and is pleasant to watch for the most part, although some character designs seem... Odd, to say the least. The story of the film is fairly dramatic, and while quite interesting, it is not particularly deep, and can actually seem quite silly depending on how one looks at it. The ending of the film was somewhat abrupt, slightly disappointing, and did leave something to be desired, but I suppose that the way it ended was the best way possible.

Overall, I recommend the film. I found it interesting, though I can imagine than any Anime fanatics who watch the film will not see anything new.
