The trees whispered their secrets to each other, as Karen and Josh walked back from the dance to Elm Street, where Karen's white Victorian-style house stood.
Josh and Karen had been dating for only a few months, and tonight they had both said the all- powerful " L" word for the first time, so they were both feeling enough warmth in their hearts to avoid the chill.
Josh had had a bit of scotch, not enough to be drunk, but enough to be very hyper and silly, and was singing an old cartoon's annoying jingle to amuse her.
" .. ten below! Friends call me Snow mizer, whatever I touch! "
Here, he did a stupid looking twirl, the snow catching in his overlong black hair, his blue eyes flashing in the dim light of the full Winter moon above.
" Turns to snow in my clutch! "
He winked, and did an outrageouse full body Elvis-ripoff pose.
" I'm too much."
" Go home, Josh: you're drunk. " She giggled, feeling a little tipsy herself from the cold air swirling around them ,whistling through the dead branches overhead like whispers... or faint screams.
She shivered, and glanced around the cold darkness around them: the trees provided plenty of hiding spots on either side of the pathway, and she couldn't escape the uneasy feeling someone or some THING was watching them.
" Hey, come on you doof: let's..."
A piercing scream echoed through the trees, loud and shrill, reverberating off the tree trunks over and over to create a funhouse effect of echoes and sound, before dying away suddenly... too suddenly.
" What the Hell?" Josh gasped, fear crossing his face through the haze of hyperness.
" Oh my god... Josh, let's go. NOW."
A branch cracked loudly, and a deep, velvet voice began to sing from the darkness of the trees.
"I'm Mr. White Christmas, I'm Mr. Snow. I'm Mr. Icicle, I'm Mr. Ten Below..."
Karen's breathing reached hyperventilation, as she saw two eyes, one amber, one blood red, glinting in the darkness of the trees.
" What the Hell? Karen, get out of here!" Josh yelled, standing to stare down the figure, who hadn't moved.
" Not without you!" She cried, tears rolling down her cheek in fear, only to freeze in hard droplets on her skin.
" Ru.."
The figure lashed: the body stood for a few seconds, the collapsed. Josh's blue eyes, her favorite feature of his, winked at her in surprise, the mouth open in an "O" of fear, several feet away from the rest of him.
" JOSH! " She shrieked, yelling as loud as she could, yelling for redemption, yelling for loss...
yelling loud enough to attract the figure's attention.
" no... please... " she whispered, as the figure came out of the trees, grinning wickedly at her.
She ran, tripping over every rough roof, sharp rock, running for her life.
Her heel broke, and she went down.
The figure overtook her, grinning down at her.
" why...? why...?"
Her screams echoed through the dark trees, which whispered their secrets to each other in the cold wind that blew off the lake.
A deep voice echoed through the woods too, but it came and went, as if the source of the wind.
"Friend's call me Snow mizer, whatever I touch, turns to snow in my clutch.."
Something moved through the trees, silently, almost appearing to be no more than a shadow, walking through the whispering trees slowly.
" I'm too much.."
The words faded.
The snow continued to fall, covering the ground with a layer of whiteness. The next day, the forest was a winter wonderland of pristine, unbroken white.
There was no sign that anyone had been there at all.
