It took a while for me to choose whether or not to make a thread about this, and that's because I wasn't so sure this was a anime worth talking about too much. But after three episodes, I can definitely say that this a really cool series.
Now, before I begin, I'd like to confess something: I'm not really too much of a Gundam fan. I only really watched Mobile Suit Gundam when it came on Toonami way back when, and I don't even remember anything from it. Still, the basic concept of giant robots fighting each other should be enough to reel me back into another series, and GBF has done just that.
Okay, so first thing: this series is WAY different than the others. I may have only seen MSG, but I do know that the series generally revolves around people using giant robots to fight in space, while GBF is about people using giant robots to fight... Skylanders style. Okay, seriously, the story revolves around a boy named Sei and his weird yet badass friend Reiji (you'll find out why he's weird and badass if you watch the show) as they play the game of Gunpla and work their way up the ladder as Gunpla champions in competitive matches against other players, Pokemon style.
Now, Gunpla, for those of you who don't know, because I always do my research before I do something like this, is the real life game of using Gundam models to fight ala playing with Pokemon or Yugioh cards. Of course, since this is an anime, it's more than meets the eye. (Ha! Get it? Gundam and Transformers? ... they're both giant robots?... Anybody?) The game of Gunpla is way more tricked out in the sense that the models that are built are sent into VR where the players control the robots to fight like they were real.
Overall, this is a more kid friendly series compared to the other Gundam anime, but even so, that's not something I would think wouldn't convince fans to watch it anyway. Did I forget to mention this anime features tons of fanservice in the form of using Gundams from past series? That might draw in some viewers.
