Some questions and advice for aspiring animators...

Posted

I know that I talk about animation a lot, but I'm being serious here. I have some things I want to ask you aspiring animators and give some advice on how to possibly get closer to that dream.

Here is a list of questions.

  • What triggered you to want to be an animator in the future?
  • Is there anybody in particular that you want to work for? (Ex. Disney, Dreamworks, Cartoon Network, etc.)
  • Do you want to try and create a small animation company?
  • Do you think animation is more a medium then a genre?
  • Do you strive to work hard in that industry?
  • How do you feel when a fictional animated story/characters brings so much emotion into peoples lives?
  • How do you plan to start reaching that dream?
  • What schools do you want to go to in order to study animation?
  • How do your friends and family feel about your dream?

Alright, now onto the advice!

Firstly, I recommend expanding on your drawing skills. Learn and try perspective drawing, life drawing, anatomy of of all kinds of living things, feeling textures and shapes of everyday things, and maybe looking for local tutors for starting out on those things. If you're too shy to talk to people, it's okay. Just have courage and temperance in order to get further. Just talk to them. Be brave. I did that, and it helped me.

Secondly, learn about basic storytelling and writing. Learn about creating a three-act structured story. Start out small, than try bigger things.

Thirdly, try to stay avoid most "How to draw" books. You can get a few of those kinds of books, but try and get anatomy books.

Forth, Learn to critique your own work. Also, try and get professional artists to critique it as well. I can't stress this enough.

Fifth, I HIGHLY recommend buying these books. They will give you some insight on animation and drawing techniques, principles, and personal thoughts from animation legends and contributors.

Here they are.

Lastly, Don't let anybody tell you animation is just kids stuff. It's what you can do with it that makes it unique to the audience. Both kids and adults. Don't let anybody get you down because of your dream. You prove them wrong. Don't just wait and dream, do things, but still keep that dream in mind. Start out small and grow better as an artist, and a person. Be inspired. Be yourself, be an individual.

Well, that's all I've got for now. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask! Have a good one! C:
