Another ordinary day of school. Kurenai was walking home, deciding to go on her own. Having friends for a change was nice, but she wanted time to think. I need to find the right person to help me with... She was cut off after accidentally bumping into someone, ending up knocked over in the process. "Oh, I'm so sorry!" She apologized, pulling herself up. The man glared at her, and continued on his way. Ugh, people these days... I'll never find who I'm looking for. I hope he's had at least some luck by now...

Kurenai grunted in pain, but managed to catch Hayate's foot. She swung him to the side and tossed him, watching him soar into a pile of rubble. "Not bad at all..."

"Ugh," Hayate groaned, climbing out of the rubble. "I guess I still have much to learn. Oh well. Let us continue," Hayate said, wringing out his shoulder and going on the attack. He dashed towards Kurenai and looked to be delivering a head on blow, but jumped over her head and locked her in a full nelson instead.

Kurenai was caught off guard by Hayate's attack. She struggled, but couldn't break out of his grip. "Ugh... You've got a good grip." She broke free of the lock, turned around, and kicked Hayate in the gut.

"Oof!" Hayate took the blow but caught Kurenai's leg. He then turned her over using her leg and got on top off her, gripping her head and neck in a headlock with both arms.

"Thank you for complimenting on my grip, Teacher," Hayate said. "Let me continue to show you my prowess."

(well now the positions are changed from how they were earlier xD)

"Hm... You're quite cocky when you get serious in a battle." She mused. "Not quite as cocky as Blue, though."

(Don't get pervy, Flash.)

"I am only trying to show you how strong I am, and how much stronger I want to become," Hayate replied, wrenching the lock on Kurenai's head.

(I'M NOOOOOT)

Kurenai groaned in response, but quickly composed herself. She looked at her special gauge, noticing it was filled. "Heh... It's good to have goals..." She activated her special ability, teleporting above Hayate. She pinned him down, putting him in the exact same headlock. "However, it's not going to be easy to get as strong as myself or Blue." She tightened her grip.

"Grr... what a strong ability," Hayate commented. "However, strength means nothing if you don't have technique!" Hayate said, shifting his body the side and flipping Kurenai on her shoulders. Then, he slipped his head out and her grip grabbed her by the legs, swinging her around until he let go and sent her flying into a nearby building, deciding to copy her as she copied him first.

Kurenai smashed through the wall. She managed to pull herself back up. "Not bad at all." She ran towards Hayate, holding her fist out to punch him. However, she jumped over him, and kicked him in the back on the head. She did a flip in the air and landed, turning back towards her opponent. "For someone at your level, that is."

"I appreciate the praise, teacher. But you being a higher level than me will not stop me from pushing my limits!" Hayate proclaimed, turning and elbowing Kurenai in the head, and then delivering a barrage of punches and kicks, ending with a solid right straight to her face.

Kurenai managed to stand still after Hayate's attacks. "Good. You'll have to push your limits if you want to stay in the game." She kicked Hayate in the gut, knocking him over. "However, you shouldn't go too far. Especially against a foe much stronger than you are."

"No offense teacher, but I do not believe in settling for my strength. There is always a way to become stronger," Hayate said, picking himself off the ground. "I realize that you are stronger than me. Very much so... but it is that strength you possess that pushes me to match your level. Its the only way I know how to become stronger," Hayate said, taking a moment to open up to his teacher.

"Hm... And how do you intend to match my strength? I'm your teacher. You will always be below me, no matter how strong you get. That is a fact." Kurenai stood still, studying Hayate. "And what happens if you and I become equals, somehow? You say you want to defeat the Kings. What then? Power corrupts. The Kings are all selfish beings. If you attain their power, you are bound to end up the same as them. Your attempts to save the game will end up putting it back into the same way it is now. This is a cycle that can not be broken. As long as Brain Burst exists, those who are the most powerful will take advantage of those weaker than them."

"My power will not corrupt me. I will only use it to..." Hayate paused. The last part of his sentence was sort of embarrassing to admit to his newfound teacher. "To... well..." He shook a little in his armor.

"Hm... I figured. You don't know what you'd do. You're vulnerable to corruption." Kurenai sighed. "Power will not do you any good if you don't control it. Even if you had a plan, you would end up the same as the Kings. I bet that you had never thought of that, did you? You just recklessly believed you could take on the Kings without thinking of how you would get that power, or what you would do after they were defeated. That doesn't make you a hero; that makes you a fool."

"No please, Teacher! I..." Hayate stopped shaking. No matter how embarrassed he might feel, he needed to come clean about what he felt inside. "I would use my power... is protect those who are close to me, like you!" He stuttered out, bowing to his teacher.

"Protect those close to you? That's what everyone says, but do they really mean it? In the Accelerated World, you have no friends. Only enemies. Everyone here is greedy. You could have someone stab your back at any moment. You really want to try to protect people in a world like this?" Kurenai stared at Hayate, anticipating his answer.

Hayate then raised his head, now fully taking in what Kurenai was saying, and staring through his helmet with a calculating and almost razzled look.

"So even you, Teacher? You would stab me in the back?" Hayate asked.

Kurenai stood perfectly still, continuing to study Hayate. "And if I did... What would you do?" She asked, in an emotionless tone. "Would you fight back, and steal my Burst Points?"

"I would hope that you wouldn't... because I would never betray you," Hayate said honestly.

Kurenai remained silent for a while. She seemed to be reflecting on what Hayate said. Hm... He seemed honest enough... She walked over to him, stopping about a foot away. "Alright, you pass." Behind her armor, she was grinning. Looks like I made the right choice, after all. The timer for the battle ended, resulting in a victory for Kurenai. The two found themselves back at Kurenai's apartment.

"Oh. I passed? Really?" Hayate asked out of sheer bewilderment. He then straightened up and bowed once more to Kurenai. "Thank you, Teacher. I'm glad that you've passed me."

Kurenai's grin faded to a smirk. "You've passed, but just this one test. You've still got a long way to go, Hayate. I hope you're ready for what's going to come in the future, because the training's just going to become more intense from here on out." She warned.

"I understand," Hayate said, raising his head up. "I won't falter. I never have."

  • Author

"Good. You'll need to be strong if we're going to get our plans to work..." Kurenai paused for a moment. Will the plan work in the first place...? It's two armies versus four... What if, even after all of this training, we still fail? What happens then?
