ScottishSkarmory Reviews: Angel Beats! (POSSIBLE SPOILERS)

Posted

Another review from me, woo. This review is on an anime that I have recently finished, Angel Beats! This anime is one of the few I've watched that I've gotten overly emotional at, with good reason no less as the abundance in characterization and memorable characters that you can easily get attached and possibly even relate to. So before I get into the review, the rating system goes as follows.

I will rate the anime on 3 categories.

  • Story
  • Characters
  • Music

As well as a 5th category I will factor in at the end being my personal enjoyment of Angel Beats.

STORY

The story of Angel Beats! centers around a boy named Yuzuru Otonashi when he awakens in a school ground, otherwise known as the Afterlife. People are brought to the Afterlife when dying but not accomplishing anything in their childhood due to it, the Afterlife serves as a second chance to these people to relive their childhood and accept their past and relinquish their lingering feelings (Much like Persona in that respect). He wakes up to a girl named Yuri Nakamura who is holding a sniper rifle, to Otonashi's surprise. I will not spoil more than that as for a first episode, it is rather eventful and throws you straight into the deep end without a moment's notice. In the bigger picture, the story is crafted expertly, the premise is beautiful. This is one of the anime that I find that makes me cry uncontrollably which is what is so brilliant about it. My only gripe is that the story ends in a cliffhanger. A CLIFFHANGER. There is nothing worse than to have a story end on a moment where you're like "So.. What happens next?" One of the bigger examples for me is Zero no Tsukaima but Angel Beats! also has a similar cliffhanger ending.

Overall, I will give The Story an 8/10! A great story and amazing premise despite the ending letting it down.

CHARACTERS

The characters are a major positive and a big stand out factor of what I like about this anime, it has all the archetypes that you would expect in an anime but pulls it out in a way that you can actually put up with them. For example, there is Yui, the crazy tsundere but sweet character and there is Noda, the asshole who always harasses or at least attempts to harass the main protagonist. There are a plethora of characters that you will meet in this anime, some you will like and some that you won't. The uniqueness of the characters however is not the amount of likable characters, it's that they are characterized in such a way that they are made memorable. It can also be taken into account that every character has their own back story of how they were brought into the afterlife that people may be able to relate to as a friend or relative or maybe even themselves have underwent and endured. Truly the characters is a spectacle in the anime and a factor that I highly praise.

Overall, I will give The Characters a 10/10! The characters is an asset that keeps you wanting more of this anime to learn about the characters.

The wonderful cast of characters.

MUSIC

It's hard to find a fault in this OST as this has an unbelievably good soundtrack. There are symphonic and synthetic tracks in this OST that mixes a blend of urgency and melody. One of the standout tracks for me is a track called "Unjust Life" which is a piano melody that plays during sad moments of the anime which really grips the viewer, it made me cry every time it was played. However, in this OST, there just isn't enough versatility. As good as the OST is, the same tracks get played over and over and over again and it starts to get really boring after a while, mainly towards the end, I had to improvise and add my own music into the mix to keep things entertaining. It's sad to see an OST ruined by something like this.

Overall I will give The Music a 7/10! The OST is amazing, don't get me wrong but the constant repeat of the same tracks lets it down.

OVERALL VERDICT

Angel Beats! Is a beautiful anime with concepts and characterization that are amazingly crafted as well as a memorable OST that granted, gets old after a while, is still a beauty to the ears upon first hearing it.

I will add my own Personal Enjoyment as a 9/10 which brings the Overall score of Angel Beats! to a solid

8.5/10!!!

i hope you enjoyed reading this review as much as I did making it.

That was a pretty awesome review!  Kirie recommended this anime to me, and I decided to watch it, and boy was I blown away!  I loved the anime for all the reasons you mentioned, not to mention the excellent voice acting!  There were some voice actors that I recognized, such as Tomoya, Sunohara and Nagisa's Dad's voice actors, and well, the art style really immersed me into the anime.  The character artwork looked so clean and detailed, and well, the story was definitely a big, emotional roller coaster ride, not to mention humorous!  Also, Kanade was so beautifully cute!  So yeah, this anime was amazing!  Nice review there! :D
