FreeFriinFreeze- A World of Ice

Posted

Hello all. you may know or not know me, but what you may want to know after clicking on this thread would be "The hell you on about?". Well, time to stop talking like a robot and explain my idea.

I've always had a desire to be close to gaming, so I decided to try and become a game developer (Right now, it seems I'll be an Indie developer, and I like the sound of it). Though I have a game in my head that I want to make, I'm just not armed with enough experience to make it something real yet.

So, I thought.

And I thought.

And I cried a little when I couldn't spawn a new idea.

Then last week, it finally came to me, in the form of the title. The lore behind the world that I'm willing to share at this point almost fell into place as soon as I got the name for the idea, yet I don't know how I came up with it. The concept is simple:

A "Free" Is someone who is able-bodied to participate in and practice a form of magic.

A "Friin" (Pronounced "Fri-in") Is one who has mastered their magic of choice.

A "FreeFriin" Is one who masters all the power that they can control (Complete growth of a human in both heart, mind, spirit, and body.)

"Freeze" is the element the game itself would fundamentally fall under and be studied (Mainly).

The idea is to also follow this game up with sequels, but I'm unsure as of now how to handle that aspect, save that the title will keep.

Anywhow, onto the aspects that I've developed to try and get people a little more interested in this project.

First, and foremost, story.

Prologue (Warning: Long, no TL;DR) [spoiler[

Ages ago, those who existed in this realm found fortune in the power of crystals, mined from the core of the planet, but at the great suffering and powerlessness of Miners. who had to dig them up was the price that was paid. Entire family lines, women, men, children, hell... Babies, practically... All sent to work in the mines for these crystals. They worked, and worked hard, mining away at and around the sweltering core of the planet, until such a time as they died. Be it from exhaustion, unsafe mine regulations, little to consume that was safe... Those times were terrifying. Mine collapses were common as well, sadly to say. Many died, all for the rich to have these crystals they so desired so greatly...

But what made them so special?

No, to these people, the blood that these people paid for the crystal's meant about a load of jack. The crystals let those who came into contact with them Dominion (Or power over) an element of which they chose. The most common, being fire, ice, nature (Of which plants and dirt/some animals), and the skies, these powers giving them the power to spew fire like the greatest dragon, or ice like the greatest serpent. It let them raise walls of land, cover them in foliage and maintained with bugs, or to soar above such well-established limits and fly above any height, better than any bird or fairy to be born yet. But they would vanish, the powers would rot and die without more crystals.

Those walls would die and collapse, the fire you spewed would liquefy to spit and same of the ice, you would begin to plummet to the ground without them. Nothing could be done about the loss of power without the crystals. So, their government decided it best to mine, and mine deep. Go to the core, dig every last one up from it. Sap the magic out of the world itself, give it to the people who wanted it and would pay the most, but keep costs for the miners cheap. Gluttony was what drove this system, gluttony for power. Either it came from magic walls or fat stacks of bills, power was all.

So the miners, they suffered. They suffered, died, were wiped out, but there was always a new family left in place. The low-ranking artisan's, the low-income family's, the singe parents and their children, the homeless and run-away's, they were all prey to the death hole of the mine. Until one day, as fate would have it, 20 lucky souls, the oldest, wisest, and strongest of the diggers and workers, who had been exposed to the stones that cursed their and so many other's lives, found a large, rather unorthodox crystal. They called every miner to their position, and escalated it. It took three-hundred hours, and fourteen hundred people to dig it out as perfectly as they could, exposing the stone. It was every color, even the rarest varieties, and even some not a person living had ever seen before.

It's power was astonishing, just looking at it was enough to become overwhelmed with a odd sensation of mortal terror. Such a powerful crystal... If the surface had ever had one like it, they would demand more. So many more... So, the twenty oldest, their families, and fourty-four others decided to assume responsibility for the crystal and it's power by attempting to absorb it into themselves as the surface would. But this crystal... It's raw, unrefined, gigantic... Powerful. Everyone who got into the attempt knew very well that kind of power, power not diluted by technology to make them safer and from the massive size would likely die in the attempt. A single human could barely survive absorbing a crystal any bigger than a baseball, they knew very well what would happen.

And so they looked to each-other, these eighty-two, the families and loved ones did, and they tried.

The power was so great, some just out-right exploded upon the instant of trying.

Others managed to last five minutes, but their bodies couldn't handle the power, they, too, fell.

One by one, the people trying to stop this power from being realized in the world above fell to such a great level of power, until the last thirty-eight, those of the strongest of the miners and their children, were left. The crystal shrunk, but the power going in was just too enormous, it was left to the twenty not only ten minutes later.

So, why did these men stay? They had lost everything. They lost their friends, family, they lost people they were responsible for. They were going to lose their lives. Why did they keep pressing on? They felt they had a duty to everyone. To those who lost their lives, in this venture or otherwise, to the rest of the miners, and to keeping the world above from becoming too powerful... To the lives of the innocent, the children, the people who weren't involved. They stayed, they pushed on. Their bodies, though older, had been exposed to the energies to much that their bodies had the ability to withstand more, and so they did. The giant crystal was now reduced to the size of a pendant. the icy blue, fiery red, grassy green, and cloud-like white rested in the gemstone, no more, no less, when those twenty stopped. They handed what was left from the stone to the living, and told them to leave. In their final moments, they concentrated the power of the crystal, all of it, into one burst, in hopes of meaning no such crystal would ever be found again. The entire area of the mine was destroyed, taking every single pathway in the mine and destroying it, and exposing to the people within range to an extremely concentrated burst of the energy, so much so that the miners, powerless and unfortunate until now, absorbed this energy unknowingly, like water on a person's skin...

The next day, a government representative came down to check their numbers, to discover a number of the people horribly disfigured and damaged, as if someone with powers had attacked them viciously. In reality, their bodies were only adjusting to their new found strengths. Within the approximate thirteen-hundred and seventy-two miners that were left alive from the incident of the other day, had all the energy those twenty men had used to destroy the mines, and more from other crystals destroyed in said explosion. The representative asked what was going to the one of their number who gained control of her powers. Ice shot through his head as she looked at him. Her blood, cold as what she now could use, killed the man. The others, who's bodies healed and adjusted, knew what the powers they were given meant. It was their time to shine, to be the ones in power.

The war lasted two months. Without a supply of crystals to keep their army's in supply, compared to the seemingly limitless power of those from the mines, meant the government could do nothing to stop it. The miners won the fight quickly, taking over for control. As the youngest of them found love among their ranks, normally with those of their element and nearly never of it's opposite and had children, it was discovered the effects the crystals had on them had changed even their very genetics, as their children began to show powers around the time they had aged about six months or so. The population also grew quicker than that of the normal human, three months aged a child like three years, they could walk and talk and act among us as if they had been around for that long as well. and continued to grow rapidly until they seemed to be fourteen.. This effect, coupled with the powers spreading through their generations, meant that their numbers spread quickly. Very quickly. They became the dominant breed of human on the surface. Where as the natural, original human population fell into decay and shrinking numbers. The ones with the powers, who stripped themselves of the name of "Miner" decided to become "Free", as they now had the freedom they so wanted, and could use the power of the crystals with no seeming limit, meaning the power was limitless (Or Free) to grow as one pleased.

Those who were "Free" treated the normal humans just as bad as they humans treated them in miner life, it was considered fair for all they had done to those who were "Free" now, they deserved it. And that was how it stayed until the events of our main story...

Start to the story

We awaken in the world. First, we must figure out what we look like. (Cut to: Character design and naming screen)

After finishing our design and name, our character (The base character will be named Sandrew, for sake of having a standard name) we wake up in our room. We, as of right now, are no more than just your average human, no powers, no nothing. From here, we will progress to learn a little about the War of the Storm, which has lead to average human decay and the birth of the "Free"'s(The prologue, which isn't included in the actual game until later), and eventually deciding that you no longer want to live the life you're living, weak, helpless, when you see a girl with icy-blue hair being chased by some street-thugs, and your adventure begins.

Well, what do you think of that? Any comments or ideas you would like to share with me on this?

Anyway, onto why this thread really exists.

I need a team. A good team. I need someone who can do tileset art (As I will be using some iteration of RPG Maker (Maybe 2003, as it has the side-by-side view rather than the FPV of RPG Maker VX Ace...) and pixel artists who can make this thing look at least half-decent. I need someone else to help me develop the story much further than I have already and develop it even farther. I would also like some people who can help me actually make the game and make it run. I can't promise pay for this, it would depend on the sales (I would be releasing it to Steam Greenlight, which would cost 100 dollars, and then after that we would have to see how much it will sell for on steam) But if we make any sort of profit, I can assure you that you will get a cut.

Are you interested in any way or form? Or just have questions or something to say? Share them in a reply, please, even telling me this sucks helps in a big way, because I can go forward to make it less-suck-y. I would be happy to take anyone and everyone.

*Heavy applause at Sandrew* (I still love that character. Curse you, Evraius (sic) )

Okay, I have to admit this looks really cool. I am very interested, trust me. I'll think of a few questions to ask you, for later!

*Shall be following this thread.*

The story sounds pretty good so far. (Thanks for reminding me I need to get to work on my current game idea...)

I could probably help with plot stuff, but I do have my own project I'm kinda thinking up at the moment, too.
