[align=center]I look in the mirror...

...and I find that I don't know the person that looks back...

Is it me?

...Or a shadow of what I've become.

The sound of my footsteps echoed across the road. I can hear my heart

I stood in the antechamber... the screams echoing through the halls, sending a chill down my spine. Then suddenly... everything was quiet, like the calm before the storm. The doctor stepped out of the room, his neatly pressed suit now ruffled, and his well kept hair out of place. He closed the door, and turned on his heel. The doctors footsteps like my heartbeat as he approached.

We stood face to face... a stern look in his eyes, a soft, hopeful look in mine... He set a friendly hand on my shoulder, and spoke the words that changed my life:

"I'm sorry..."

Her name was Rose, we had been friends for many years before marrying. After a few years of marriage, we decided we wanted children. So, we went for the chance... and nine months later, it was time for that big day. She went into labor, and we called the family's doctor... Eight, lonesome hours later, the screams could be heard My wifes familiar yell, and a suppressed wail. But, in naught but a few seconds. The ear shattering noises were silenced. Rose had died during childbirth... and the baby never made it.

My hands were bloodstained. My whole body was. I screamed out, hoping that someone, anyone, would actually hear my cries of pain. Nobody came to care about us

I walked down the road without a word. Hands in my pockets, collar of my coat bunched up around my chin.

It was cold that night... a perfect reprensation of what I had become. Cold. Heartless, sometimes even cruel.

Since the loss of my family, nothing had been the same. My shoes scraped on the sidewalk as the force behind my steps increased. The anger building up... just the thought of it made me furious.

Why were the fates so cruel as to pick me for their chew toy? Why was my life their play thing?

Those questions haunted my waking hours, and the scenario lurked in my nightmares.

It was then that I noticed her... out in the front lawn.

Beating her head on a tree.

I approached her, one foot in front of the other, stopping arm's length from her.

She had a rare innocence within her features. One that made her unique.

Something about her just seemed to fill in a gap within my heart, and I could tell he wasn't like other children.

If she fulfilled the purpose I now had in mind for her, then I had found my escape.

"Hello, child, might I ask your name?" I said in a soft, friendly voice.

I looked up at the man as he looked down on me. I felt dwarfed considering I was so tiny and he was a full grown adult. I was almost nervous at the sight of him, too nervous to speak at first actually. I observed him for a full minute before I felt that I needed to answer his question. My mouth was wide open that whole time, as if I was speaking but no sound came out.
