You do realize this series is Jim acting in a very sarcastic way, it's not to be taken 100% seriously.

That said, it may be overused, but so are a whole lot of other tropes.

When it's stereotypically used, yes. But when you do it right, like Kingdom Hearts and Pokemon, it just plays out better.

 

And to be honest, they implement the power of friendship very well in Pokemon X and Y when you do the Pokemon Amie! The Pokemon withstand blows and recover from status effects automatically when you have full affinity with them. I love it! It made me feel a very realistic connection with my Greninja. It felt too real!

Yes, the power of friendship is used a lot, however I don't think it's a big deal. It works well in most games. Honestly, I think clichés in general aren't a big deal. I think any sort of theme or trope can work as long as it's done right even if it is overused. That being, said, I think it's done well in KH.
