Both are Atypical Shojo if I were to classify them but they each are unique in their own way. Very unlike 'Marmalade Boy' by Wataru Yoshizumi which is a very standard Shojo with Cliched story.
I recently read both and both left me in tears. Particularly Orange by Takano Ichigo left a really strong impression on me because its a manga that deals with severe depression and I see bits of my old personality in the male lead 'Naruse Kakeru' - so I particularly resonate with this manga. but other than that I really reccomend the movie too when it comes out (It has really beautiful music mind you).
The plot of Orange is
about a group of friends trying to save a young boy (Naruse Kakeru) ridden with guilt and severe depression from comitting suicide. The manga flips back and forth between the present and 10 years later when the group of friends now live without kakeru because he successfully committed suicide. So instead this group of friends from the future decide to somehow send letters to their past selves to warn them about the suicide of Kakeru.
The story basically is an attempt by this group of friends they manage to change the past and prevent Kakeru's death but they soon realise even if they manage to prevent his attempt, it won't save his heart or mind...and so Its quite bitter sweet and left me in tears in multiple chapters.
Also, Orange by TAKANO Ichigo is getting a live drama which is coming out in Japan theatres this December the 12th.
I rate the manga about a 7-8 out of 10 purely because I reckon the end was REALLY abrupt and I feel there are some things that could be done better
The plot of The stars sing (By the Fruits Basket Author) is
actually about many things - such as finding acceptance in a family (Skuya Shiina), living up to the world's expectations (Kanade), coping with depression (Sakura) or coping with regret (Chihiro)...but it deals with the theme of finding love (not boyfriend/girlfriend love necessarily but there is that too such as the love triangle between Yuuri, Chihiro and Sakuya) but having appreciating the love from friends and family (Sakuya, Chihiro, Yuuri, Sei/Hijiri and Saki) and knowing there is light even in depressing moments. I'll admit its slow to start and the characters are slow to warm up to but there are some heartwarming scenes that leave your feeling fuzzy and in tears. It lets your know that even in this cold and unforgiving world that there are people who will be there for you because.....your smile matters and the stars will always sing for you
I rate the manga about a 6 out of 10, again because ending was REALLY abrupt and I wish they'd do more character development on Kanade (my fav character)
Anyway I'm rambling. If you wanna know? read it yourself if you're interested! I guarantee you it won't be a waste of time. (Especially Orange by Takano Ichigo)
As for marmalade boy...my recommendation is it is VERY cliche...and it shares oh so many events from Korean and japanese dramas so I won't go into detail and bore anybody else. My rating for Marmalade boy is a 4/10 - It was fun to read but gets very old after a while.
Anyone read these two mangas before?
