S/O to Dustin Newton for coming up with the idea of Dusks working desk jobs and Robbie the Wise for saying "this should be a fanfic"
Disclaimer: I don't normally write. So yeah.
It was an average day in The World That Never Was. While Organization XIII was concocting its latest plot, the denizens of the Dark City continued their typical - and sometimes mundane - routines.
However, one Nobody had a not-so-normal day.
Steve had just gotten a new job as an accountant in The Corporation That Never Was, which was comprised of the Nobodies directly under Organization XIII and located within Memory's Skyscraper.
Once the automatic doors slid open, Steve nervously slithered toward the receptionist. The nameplate on the desk said 'Susan'.
"Good morning! You must be the new guy!" exclaimed Susan. "You're going to be up on the seventh floor. Just go up the elevator and the guys up there will show you."
"T-thank you, ma'am," Steve stammered. He did as he was told and went up to the seventh floor.
When the elevator doors opened, Steve was greeted by a Berserker.
"Greetings," the giant said. "My name is Johnson. I'm the boss of this floor. It's a pleasure to have you on board." He extended his hand.
"Uh... The pleasure is mine, sir," Steve said as he reciprocated his higher-up's action. To his surprise, Johnson didn't completely crush his hand in the handshake.
"Now then, your cubicle will down this hallway and to the right," said Johnson, pointing the way for the neophyte Nobody. "We haven't had a new employee in a while, so if the others give you a hard time, just let me know."
"Will do, sir," said Steve, relieved that he could trust this docile behemoth.
Steve then slinked on over to his cubicle. The cubicle across from his was occupied. Maybe I should introduce myself, Steve thought. I never really had that many friends at my old job.
After mustering his courage, Steve stepped into the other cubicle and spoke. "Good morning, Mister Co-worker. I'm Steve. I'm new here, but I hope that I can make your acquaintance." He finished with a small bow.
The Dusk at the desk turned his chair around. "Well, I guess you're the lucky sap who got the opening. Nice to meet ya. Name's Sid."
After exchanging the usual pleasantries, Steve moved over to his cubicle and sat down at his desk.
It's my first day and I've already got important work to do. I've gotta make sure the Superior's budget is balanced. Even if it may be hard, I've got to do my best!
With newfound determination, he booted up his computer. He looked around the cubicle and noticed an old nameplate, inscribed with and unfamiliar name.
"Um, Sid? Who's... Boris?"
"Ah, he was the bloke who was here before you. He was a kind soul and was excellent at his job. Damn shame that he's gone."
"Why'd he quit?"
"He... He didn't exactly quit. A while back some things happened. Stocks went down. Some kid in the Organization went AWOL. We had to lay off some people. Boris wanted to make up the work that was lost due to the decrease in personnel, so he starting working overtime. Didn't have a good effect on his health. Shortly after, he learned that his wife had died out in the field. She was in the force. Now, most Nobodies wouldn't taken some time off, but not Boris. He kept on working. By focusing solely on his work, he didn't have to face his harsh reality. But even that didn't last for long.
"One night Boris was still here when that deserter kid came back. Some Heartless appeared out front, and the kid fought them. Then a blindfolded human showed up and fought him. The battle took them through the building a few times, and even on this floor. Apparently Boris hid in a closet. By the time he went back out, the battle was over, and half of the floor was destroyed. We eventually got things repaired, but Boris was still affected by the events.
"His productivity began to suffer. His health declined even more. Maybe he was afraid that something might happen again. I don't know, I was too afraid of setting him off to ask.
"Then one day he arrived as usual, but he sat down and did nothing. When it was time for our lunch break, he suddenly jumped up and threw himself out the window. We... We held a funeral for him the next day."
Steve stared at his co-worker in silence, too shocked by the story to speak.
"Maybe it's something you'd be better off not knowing, but I don't think I should be hiding things from you," Sid said. "You may be a newbie, but you've got the skills, otherwise you wouldn't have been chosen to replace him. And don't worry, there won't be any more weird things happening anymore."
"T-thank you," Steve managed to say in response to his co-workers vote of confidence and assurance. "I'll try not to let you... or him... down."
Steve then began his work, wondering how things would end up for him.
Well damn, that felt like a lot. It got kinda dark too. Then again, some Nobody /shot needed to die. Maybe. I blame Robbie. Also I don't feel like editing, so that was all just straight from my brain Probably explains why it's bad and unpolished.
