So, in a nutshell, I can't get masks to work and all the tutorials I've found haven't been helpful at all.

 

I've selected the image I'm using with anchors, but the image itself isn't cutting out, like here: http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/1465/shittt.png (ignore the awkward subtitle xD).

you have to connect all the anchors together. 8D i don't think you did that there. the line should go like light blue.

it is light blue naturally but

it noticeably changes lolol /fail

I think the problem is your path isn't completely connected. You have to make sure you outline it in one path otherwise nothing will happen.

 

If you accidentally click off and it changes your path to a new one, simply click on one of the anchor points at the end of your line and keep on going. :3
