Ryker shrugged. "Oh, bribery among other things. Mostly my good looks and charm." He winked teasingly, and grinned. "But, point is, she's here. For a while there I didn't think we'd be able to convince her to come all the way here. I think she really wanted to go back. Actually," His smile faltered. "I don't really think she wants to be here at all. Hikari's freaking out a little."

 

Hikari squirmed under Emi's brush. Her hair was a tangled mess, considering it'd been years since it was anything more than occasionally finger-combed. "That hurts! Just let it go, Emi! I'm not going to need to look presentable for that long!" Hikari felt like dying when she looked in the mirror. Of course, she really didn't care how she looked. In her day-to-day life, who would really see her? But still, she did look like a mess.

Logan raised his eyebrows and with a mischievous smile asked, “What good looks?” He enjoyed messing with Ryker. “Anyways, really? Well it will take her some time to get use to being back out in the open. Do you think she’ll stay the night at one of our houses? I mean she can’t go straight back to her house after the party. It’ll be too dark plus monsters apparently have been sighted outside the city.” Logan was always the first to know about any important news related to the city. It was one of his talents to just walk around, listening to people and gaining information. No one really seemed to notice him whenever he listened in on their conversations. But he liked it that way; Emi was the one who enjoyed all the attention.

 

“I’m sure Hikari could handle a few monsters…if it’s even true. But she could just stay here with you guys since you do have the biggest house out of all of us.” Arya said as she looked around to see if Emi and Hikari were coming yet. What’s taking them so long? She thought, getting quite bored of the idle chat.

 

“Is this the first time you’ve brushed your hair since you left!?” Emi asked, trying to get the brush out of Hikari hair. Finally, the brush came out after yanking it extremely hard. “Finally… Are you sure you don’t want me to fix it up a bit more? Now, that I got the major tangles out I should be able to comb through it easier.” Emi asked, unsure about leaving Hikari’s hair that way.

Ryker pretended to be offended that anyone would scoff at his looks, but then answered. "Well, that'd be quite a feat. I think she's to scared to stay here. I think she'd rather risk monsters than spend any longer with us." Ryker shrugged and turned away, watching the endless sea of decorations float in the breeze. "Don't think she really cares about us any more. If she did she'd be a lot more trusting than this."

 

Hikari pushed back the chair she was collapsed on and marched towards the door. "Who cares if it's the first time? I wouldn't have even had to do it if you wouldn't have come bothered me. My head hurts now, so can we just go start this silly party or what?" She shoved the door open more forcefully than nessecary, and it slammed loudly against the wall. There was a small whimper of disappointment, and after a moment Hikari realized it was Emi. "Um..." She paused uncertainly. "Um... I mean, it's your party. You should come out and have fun. We'll... all... have fun."

Haha, it's fine. I sort of forgot about this. D;

 

Emi tried to keep herself together. She knew Hikari could be rude sometimes but it still hurt. "Uh..yeah, fun." She muttered, as she and Hikari walked outside. Emi saw Arya looking completely annoyed. Colton looked like he wanted the ground to swallow him whole. While Ryker and Logan were the only two who looked that they were enjoying themselves. Well this is a great way to start a party... Emi thought as they walked over to everyone. "Hey guys!! How's everyone doing?" She smiled trying not to look disappointed. After all, everyone did drop everything they were doing to come celebrate my birthday. Emi thought, The least I could do is enjoy myself.

 

Logan smiled as Emi and Hikari walked up. Finally.. he thought. It had been two years since Hikari left civilization to live on her own in the wilderness so she looked quite different. Logan looked at her hair, and tried not to bust up laughing. He looked straight at Ryker with a smirk and raised eyebrows, like he was asking "Why didn't you tell us about that?" Logan used all his willpower to keep his face straight as he spoke, "Sup sis. Hikari! Long time no see. How's it going? Missed being around people?"

Hikari muttered something under her breath, and then announced louder, "Why would I miss this? What's to like? Everyone is all topsy turvy and psycho, and there's all these monsters, and the government is spying on us and watching everything we do. Why would I want to be stalked and watched and hunted by the government! They're after us and you just haven't got the brains to realize it yet!" Hikari's voice had begun soft, but had slowly climbed until she was shouting, if daring someone to challenge her on that belief and spur her on to another rant. Then she began to take in the hurt looks on their faces, but she didn't want to back down from her words. Whether anyone else believed her or not didn't matter, as long as Hikari herself knew she was right. That was what she tried to tell herself, at least.

 

Colton shied away from Hikari's furious screaming. He felt like a young child being lectured as they awaited punishment, and it wasn't a comforting feeling. He took shelter behind Logan and Arya, tears bubbling in his eyes. He didn't want everyone fighting and upset--it just reminded him of his parents harsh fights during his childhood. Colton wanted to speak up, but for a boy of such crippling shyness, silence was the only option.

Arya was angry. She couldn’t believe how ridiculous Hikari sounded. “Well, why don’t you tell us exactly how we’re being spied on by the government?” She shot back, letting out all the feelings that had built up over the course of two years. Arya wasn’t going to let Hikari rant on and on about how it was the government’s fault she had died. It was Hikari’s fault and nothing she or anyone else could say different. “Don’t you realize how stupid and idiotic you sound Hikari!? The government is not after me, you or any of us. Can’t you get that into your big head or do I have to knock it into you myself?”

 

Logan shook his head and looked at Ryker, giving him a look that screamed, “What should we do now?” He knew it wasn’t exactly the brightest thing to get between Arya and Hikari, especially when they looked like they were ready to kill. But Logan sighed and jumped in anyway. “Now guys. Come on, we’re here for Emi’s birthday. Let’s just try to enjoy ourselves for Emi’s sake. Please.” He looked at Colton and could see tears about to run down his face. Poor kid, Logan thought. They’re scaring him.

Hikari ignored Logan. "It's more than what you think! They have secret spies on the streets. There are hidden cameras everywhere, probably even in you house! You just don't have the intelligence or the eyesight for that matter. They're after you because they know everyone has secrets! People are thinking things and planning things and always rebelling even in peace times! They think they have to, and I don't want to be part of it!" Hikari spat furiously.

 

Ryker was actually enjoying the show. He didn't feel like intervening until he noticed Colton's tears. With a sigh, he said, "You know what? You're right Hikari. You're right about how evil the government is and how they're spying on us and etcetera etcetera. Great, are we all happy now? Sit down and celebrate a birthday party you dumbwads. This isn't how it works."

“I don’t have the intelligence?” Arya asked furious. She was about to go full on crazy mood when she looked at Colton and Emi. Colton was trying extremely hard not to cry and Emi was pretty much in a river. Arya snapped out of it. What’s wrong with me? I’m ruining Emi’s special day. She shook her head, “You know what, forget it. I’m here to celebrate Emi’s birthday and not to get into a stupid argument about how idiotic your little theories about how ‘the government is spying on us’ are. “

 

Emi was crying, harder than she had ever cried before. Her two best friends were arguing over something completely silly. And her birthday was absolutely ruined. Great way to start my first day as a legal adult now right? Emi thought as Arya and Hikari stopped fighting.
