What can I do with an art major?

Posted

I'm currently a college sophomore (19) and working for a BA in studio arts. i may also want to go somewhere for digital art/ animation/ game art, and other computer works. The problem is I can't afford to go to another school specifically for digital arts. As well, my parents just don't think I can get anywhere in life with an art major. I don't want to be a teacher, and I don't have any connections to be famous. I'm starting to lose a bit of hope. Or I'm just forgetting my goal.

What could I do in life with a major in art?

You could set up your own art studio maybe? I'm not really sure what you can do besides teaching tbh :/

become comicbook artist?

Teach, professional artist, video games(you don't necessarily have to work with the computers, you can be the one pitching the designs and things like that), graphics (like books and stuff like that) there's so much.

You could teach art, definitely... otherwise? Exactly everything you can do without one. In the art world, your portfolio of what you have done speaks just as much volume. If people like what they see when you submit it, they won't even care if you have a major in it. You can't exactly say that about any other major. You can prove you can do art without having to show a degree. You can't show you have a major in say, biochemistry, with just a portfolio - but you can with art. Just keep that in mind: you definitely do not need a degree to be a professional artist.

But degree or no degree, it's hard to get a job in art. Even professional artists have to take on second careers. =/ You may want to devote your schooling to something else and this is coming from a fellow artist.

I was in the same situation as you. Art schools are so expensive. That's why now I'm majoring in English xD

1. Join Deviant art, Show off some of your art and sell it there.

2. Join another image/photo site and share your skills

3. Try and impress someone that works at a place you would like to that specializes in art and that stuff

Also, If you just look for a job like that It will be hard to come by so I'd suggest to keep your options more opened

If you have a digital arts degree and something in computers you could work for a video game developer or a digital animation studio like Pixar or Dreamworks.

However these are the most valuable jobs at the moment and there will be a lot of competition to get into any of these fields.

Your best bet would to try and take baby steps. Start with a small, lesser known and/or brand new studio/developer and work your way up.

If you duel major in advertisement/marketing along with another form of art (my opinion would be digital art) you could probably land a pretty awesome job working in the advertising department of a big company. I mean who do you think designs the billboards and websites for those companies? And from what I hear people who do that tend to make a lot not that money really should effect your final decion nothing should stop you from doing what you are passionate about.
