So I just finished watching a 25 minute documentary obout the development of Metal Gear Rising, and I've got to say I walked away with a very different perspective than I did with the VGA trailer. Let's start with some simple facts:
- Hideo Kojima said himself that this IS NOT METAL GEAR SOLID 5. In fact, it has nothing to do with MGS5.
- While the story was written by Kojima Productions, everything else is being handled by Platinum Games. Everything.
- The story takes place afterGuns of the Patriots. More on that down the page.
Now, let's elaborate.
MG RISING v. MGS5
Revengeanceis notMetal Gear Solid 5. Hideo Kojima said that in his plans for MGS5, he wanted it to chronicle The Boss and her Cobra Unit during the invasion of Normandy (a pivotal part of The Boss' history, and therefore a pretty important part of the series). Rising is a side game, but I'll say more about that near the end. Walk away from this knowing that this is not MGS5.
Platinum Games
Yes, Platinum Games is running all of the technical aspects of Rising. Kojima outsourced the game when he realized that the team that he had working on it wer ehaving difficulty combining the traditional elements of MGS (stealth and espionage) with what they wanted (cut-everything nija action). Therefore, he cancelled the project at Kojima Productions and asked Platinum Games if they wanted in on it. They rebuilt the game from the ground up, with Kojima keeping a tight leash around them of course.
You may remember that Platinum Games gave us Bayonetta, a game that I really enjoyed (being a DMC fan to boot). As Kojima said, Platinum believes that what you get out of a game is what you do. They aim to destroy everything in your path, and Rising seemes to be doing just that.
After Guns of the Patriots?!
If you were in a coma, then you missed the majesty that was Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. The game ended (no spoilers) with the collapse of the War Economy and (little spoiler) Raiden reunited with Rose and his son, all human-y.
Than why the hell is he a cyborg ninja again if this is after MGS4? Simple. It's a side game.
Look at other side games in the Metal Gear saga. My examples are the Metal Gear Ac!d series (because I played them). They are non-canon. Nothing that happens in the Ac!d games relates to the story of the Metal Gear saga at all. While they involve Snake, they are completely independant of the story. It seems that Rising is following that trends, considering that it's Post-War Economy and there are Gekkos and RAYs and PMC cyborg soldiers running around. The RAY in the trailer was a land-based MG; its fins were converted into swords. That's how not canon this is.
I'm hoping that I alleviated at least a little of your concern over the next "Metal Gear" title. So while your blood pressure is hopefully dropping, remember that this is not Metal Gear Solid 5, and I'm confident in saying that it follows Ac!d in being non-canon.
