Serah covered her face with her pillow, hating the sun as it tried to wake her. "Sun, sun, go away, don't come back 'till I'm awake." She muttered to the tune of 'Rain, Rain, Go Away'. She wasn't an early riser and, to Serah, 10 AM was quite early. Who the heck had any reason to be up that early. Still, even using her pillow as a shield, it had successfully woken her up. She threw the pillow back and glared daggers at the sun, knowing she'd lose that staring contest. Instead, she sat up and began combing through her tangly mess of hair, trying to pull at least a few of the knots out.

Squeak, squeak.

Marshall turned the shower knob, forcing it a bit when it wouldn't go. The thing was ancient; it was so caked with rust it was almost unusable. But it was better than nothing. He stepped delicately into the tub. Once the pipes had heated up a bit, he leaned his head backwards, letting the warm water run down the front of his body.

"Mmmm...now this is what I'm talking about." Marshall yawned. He had been up since six and now it was what? Nine? Ten? He always had had trouble sleeping.

A sudden knock on the door roused him from his thoughts. It sounded short, impatient, and was definitely the last thing he wanted to hear at the moment.

"Gah...probably someone tryin' to sell us something. I guess I'll let Serah get it," he said as he went back to lathering his hair with soap.

Serah wanted to throw something out the window at whatever freak was knocking on their door. "Shut up!" She grumbled, but stomped downstairs anyway, slightly embarrassed by her fluffy Hello Kitty pajamas. Serah unlatched the bolt and pulled it opening, yawning for effect, so they'd know they'd woken her up. But what her eyes met woke her up instantly. Of course her morning would start with a visit from the Game Masters. The buff soldiers before her, Enforcers, had surprisingly not knocked down her door. Serah didn't hesitate before throwing her leg out and knocking one over. Her voice shook slightly when she shouted, "Marshall! Get down here!"

Marshall froze. Serah was calling him; this couldn't be good. He leapt out of the shower and hastily wrapped a towel around his waist, making sure he grabbed his derringer off the sink counter.

"Serah! What's going on?!" Water flew off his body as he sprinted down the oak staircase and his feet were sliding everywhere, slowing him down. When he finally reached the front door, he stopped completely. Enforcers. He thought about trying to shoot one, but he knew it would be useless--the enforcers were just too strong.

"W-what do you want from us?" he squeaked, summoning up all of his energy to do so.

Serah slammed the door, knowing it probably wouldn't slow them down much. She felt the wideness of her eyes. "Run!" She yelped, racing back up the stairs. The door pounded in loudly behind her. She threw up the window at the top of the stairs. The height was daunting, but Serah didn't hesitate. After all, that was what wings were for. Taking the biggest leap she could manage, Serah unfolded her white-and-pink wings, trying to catch herself on the wind before she splattered on the ground. Once she'd managed to stabalize, she glanced back, waiting for Marshall. At least those stupid Enforcers couldn't fly.

Marshall quickly shoved his legs into a pair of pajama pants laying on the floor and threw himself out the window after Serah. His black wings pumped forcefully, struggling to keep himself up; it had been so long since he had last flown, he was surprised they were working at all.

He looked back at the house. The Enforcers were standing in front of the house, probably calling for back up.

We really need to get moving, Marshall thought to himself as he flew after Serah, I don't think we can handle much more...

Serah shivered in the cold and slowed down for a moment, giving Marshall a chance to catch up. She glanced back over her shoulder, watching the Enforcers that were calling to them angrily from below. "I wonder why they were here. How'd they figure out where we live?" As she flew, Serah pulled in her Hello Kitty shirt tightly to her body, struggling for warmth. She scanned the ground for somewhere to land, and figured it'd be best to hide in plain sight. On top of that, the Dunkin Donuts she was eyeing looked pretty warm. "Let's land over there," She pointed. "I want some donuts."

"But we're barely dressed...!" Marshall started to complain, until a strong gust of wind hit them at full force. His whole body felt like ice--he hadn't had time to dry off before leaving the house and it was cold enough outside already. "Actually, yeah...doughnuts are a good idea." He drifted downwards, trying to get the ground both quickly and without being seen.

It seemed like hours before they reached the Dunkin Donuts. But, finally, they were there. They were getting a lot of strange looks, but at least it was warm.

Serah didn't mind walking around in her Hello Kitty pajamas. Even if she hadn't been forced out of her house by Enforcers, it was something she was confident enough to do. After all, did it really matter if no one else did it? She ordered hot chocolate, and the cup was finished in seconds, her throat numb from the temperature of it. Serah watched the door all the while. Despite how cozy and safe she felt right now, she knew feelings were nothing but illusions. "I think we should stay here for a while. It's not safe to go back outside with all these Enforcers out."

"I agree...We'll have to be extra careful." Marshall sipped at his coffee. Blech. Not sweet enough. He grabbed half a handful of sugar packets from the container on their table and began emptying them into the cup, leaving the wrappers in a neat little stack by his elbow. "It's scary, how quickly they found us. Just imagine if we hadn't gotten out in time." He shuddered.

The shop had an average amount of customers this morning, so they could blend in without feeling crowded. But still, something just wasn't right. Marshall was still spooked that the Enforcers had caught up to them, just as they thought they were finally away from everything...

"I still don't even get why they're even bothering with us. I don't understand what they want from us. I mean, do they just want to catch us and do some crazy science experiments or do they want to kill us. I don't get their angle." Serah was still cupping her empty hot chocolate cup, enjoying the warmth still radiating from it. She slid down in her seat, trying to hide her face. Enforcers were identifiable by their physique, black suits, and usually some sort of weapon. Though Serah had never entirely figured out whether it was to scare them or for real use. "I think that's an Enforcer," She whispered, slinking down even further to avoid detection. "They wouldn't attack us in here, in front of everybody, would they?"

"I'm not sure...I don't think so, but we shouldn't take chances." Marshall looked over at the Enforcer. He was sitting at a table not far from them, looking nonchalant, but occasionally glancing over at them.

He's definitely here for us...but why?

He nervously began tearing at one of the empty sugar packets. If they stayed here, they risked the Enforcer somehow getting to them. If they left, he might follow them and get them alone. There was no easy way out of this.

Serah sat back up, and used the large glass windows to her advantage. "Doesn't look like he's got any backup waiting outside. They might have split up to look for us." She bit her lip nervously. "Should we try and make a run for it? We might be able to take on just one of them. Or maybe even two if we have to. It's not fair to risk everyone else in here. I think that Enforcer's only after us." Serah's eyes automatically shifted skyward. "If we don't think we can win, we can always up-up-and-away." She pushed down on the unstyled pile of hair on her head, trying to look at least a little more like she hadn't just rolled out of bed. "We can't stay here all day, anyways. This place closes eventually."

"Mmm..." Marshall quickly scanned the room. The Enforcer had unwisely chosen a spot far from the door, and now there were so many people in the shop that it would be harder for him to get across the room to catch them if they ran now. "Okay. Let's do it."

He calmly pushed his chair back and made an effort to walk out as normally as possible. The less attention they attracted the better. As soon as they were outside the store, he bolted, occasionally looking back to make sure Serah was following.

"I don't think he noticed," Marshall panted, "At least not yet!"

  • Author
"Well, let's hope it stays that way!" Serah figured ducking into another store probably wasn't the smartest idea, considering they'd have to keep replaying the previous scenario over and over again until the Enforcer finally caught them. "Good thing it doesn't seem like his partner in crime was out here waiting for us. Then we'd have two of them to deal with." She glanced up at the sky. Right now, all Serah wanted was to go home. But that didn't really seem like an option anymore, or even very safe. "Let's do a Superman and up-up-and-away. The sky is the only place the Enforcers can't follow us, so that's probably the safest place for right now. Until they stop tracking us," Serah ducked into one of the small alleyways and unfurled her pink-and-white wings, taking a little leap to give herself a boost as she took to the sky.

Marshall spread out his wings and flew upwards after her. They still hurt--the short flight before wasn't enough to warm them up--but he would have to deal with it for now. He look towards the house. The other Enforcer was still waiting, just in case they decided to come back.

"Well...I guess home's out of the question." He sighed. "Where do we go now?" They had nowhere to go. No friends, no safe houses, no parents to take them in...in fact, Marshall wasn't even sure either of them HAD parents.

"That's a good question," Serah noted, sighing softly. "Sometimes I wish I didn't have wings. That would probably get us out of this whole mess." She winced when she heard a voice.

"You've got to play the game." Serah's head swiveled, trying to put a face to the voice. "You can't stop playing the game. There wouldn't be any Enforcers if you would just play the game, Serah." She was about ready to scream.

"What is that? Marshall, did you hear that?" Serah stuttered, hardly able to speak. "The thing about a game?"

Marshall tilted his head slightly. "What about a game?" Serah looked scared--really scared. But he hadn't heard a thing. "Are you feeling alright?" He looked around for whatever had supposedly talked, but still there was nothing.

Now, he was really spooked. "Come on...let's just keep going." Marshall began flying again. Suddenly, he felt something strong and hard crash into his back, and before he knew it, he was falling, his wings completely paralyzed.

"Mashall!?" Serah flew down and grabbed his arms, trying to fly them both. "I can't carry both of us, Marshall! We have to land," Serah yelped, and they crash landed on the concrete alley she was trying to aim for. It wasn't the smoothest landing Serah had ever made, not that she was good at those anyway. They tumbled until they crashed into a dumpster. "Ew, ew, ew, ew, ew," Serah tried to wipe all the dumpster germs off of her. "I can't believe I touched that icky thing! Gross! I'd rather deal with the Enforcers!" She shook her head and then glanced at Marshall. "I don't understand. You really didn't hear any voices talking about us having to play the game? They said we had to play the game and the Enforcers would stop coming. But they didn't say what the game is or anything. Maybe it's Parchese?"

"I haven't heard anything. And aside from what just happened, I haven't felt anything strange." Marshall gripped his head with his hands. "Oh, this is so confusing!"

He climbed out of the dumpster and looked around. He wasn't familiar with this part of town; he and Serah usually never left the busy shopping district. The only major things here were a pawn shop, a dilapidated warehouse, and a sleazy-looking diner.

"We should get out of here...I'm really starting to get creeped out." He gripped his arms closer to his chest.

  • Author
"Really? But I'm sure I heard something..." Serah murmured, her head beginning to spin. "Maybe it was a vision? I usually get some sort of visual along with the voices, but that's all I can think it might be if you didn't hear it too. It was really loud--shouting, almost." She looked around a bit nervously. "Maybe getting out of here is a good idea. This kinda of looks like somewhere Enforcers would hang out. Not to mention other kinds of creeps and freaks alike." She smiled slightly. "Sometimes it's nice to know that we're not the craziest people out there. I need a break, though. My wings feel like they're burning."
"Ugh, I know." Marshall rubbed his shoulder blade, wincing. "I don't think I could fly another inch." He made his way out of the alleyway and out on the street. Brrr. Marshall felt a chill go up his spine. It was just so...empty here. A couple people moved about, moving in and out of the few shops, but other than that it was completely devoid of life. Oh well. At least it would be harder for the Enforcers to find them now; they would never think to look here.

Serah was a little nervous about venturing into the street. It was a very dirty, sleezy-looking sectino of town, and it unsettled Serah. "Let's just hrury and get something to eat, and then fly out of here. I have a bad feeling about this place. It's just... really really creepy. Like a mugger or an Enforcer might just pop out of an alleyway or jump off a roof. And I never get my full day's sleep, so now I'm running on only ten hours of sleep. Great," She glanced around. "Well, there's a little diner. I still have some change in my pocket. We could at least grab some sodas while we let our wings take a break."
